After several conversations with some younger co-workers concerning films I began to feel like a fosil.
It seems as though a great many "classic" films are virtualy unknown by "the 20 something" crowd,as my mentioning of James Cagney and Humprey Bogart was met by blank expresions and shrugs.
So,does anyone still appreciate the "OLD" films (I'm looking at you young ones),or has "entertainment" simply become a series of explosions and CGI?
So how about it Dakka, lets have some of your favorite "oldies" ( 1970s and back).,and what are your thoughts on the classic VS more recent films?

A brief list of some of my favorites would include....

Angels with dirty faces ( James Cagney/Humprey Bogart)
Sahara (Humprey Bogart)
12 Angry men
All quite on the western front
Frankenstien
Zulu
Arsenic and old lace.

And many more.

Seriously though i like Magnificent Seven a good bit of John Wayne movies and a bunch of other stuff i cant remember. Personally i think GOOD acting is all but nought dead nowadays. Dont get me wrong there is some good acting films still out there but few and far between.

Ahh,Max Shreck..yes indeed, a fantastic film.

Incidently Shadow,if you liked Nosferatu, you might enjoy "Shadow of the vampire" a fictionalized account of the filming of Nosferatu staring William DeFoe.

Good acting has always been rare.

Meanwhile, The Lion in Winter comes to mind, as does Chinatown.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I don't watch many older movies, no good reason for it, but one I just watched recently was "The Longest Day," a John Wayne D-Day movie, it's ridiculously flawed and overblown (was the most expensive b&w film ever until Schindler's List came along), but hella fun.

Another one that I enjoyed and really need to see again is Kind Hearts & Coronets, where Sir Alec Guinness plays just about everybody.

Zulu is of course, awesome, as is the original Italian Job, the original Get Carter and just about everything Michael Caine touched prior to 1980 or so.

I have a deep love for silent movies. The things Charlie Chaplain and Buster Keaton did were amazing. Some of their stunts blow my mind. They were the Spielbergs and James Camerons AND the actors of their day.

Steamboat Bill Jr.
The General
The Gold Rush

Also, Old Foreign Films don't get appreciated enough. One name alone is easily as great as any current director (or better)... Akira Kurosawa. He made movies that have been copied for decades. And his was the best.

Seven Samurai remade into Magnificant Seven I'd say Seven Samurai is one of my all time favorite movies, easily a top ten.
Sanjuro remade into the Dollars Trilogy
Yojimbo remade into Last Man Standing

Most movies are at this point a redo of an older movie, often that was more stylish and fun than these blue screen jokes. I can say in 5 years I've seen less than 6 great new movies.

Love it, I can ahppily watch anything Cary Grant does, and this film especially just works on so many levels. Incredibly well shot, especially the stunts, when you consider the limitations of the tech. at the time.

Also : Harvey. Sublime performance from Jimmy Stewart, and very quotable too

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

If you ever watched Farscape you really should watch this.

Speaking of Old School Disney....

Does anyone remember the Black Cauldron and how awesome it was? It was about as good as The Secret of Nimh was, but Disney.

It was by far the darkest movie they EVER did. Its pretty far off the beaten path, and it rocks.

Guys, if you don't know if it's 'to new' there's this little site http://www.imdb.com that'll give you that sort of information.

As to whoever said they like Disney's Black Cauldron, it's not bad and it is dark for Disney (producers of such lighthearted fare as Old Yeller and Kill Bill), but the books are far better and much different.
