Would you run for office?

Why or why not?

What would be your platform?

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

No.

I have too many crazy exgirlfriends that would be coming out of the wood work to destroy my reputation (not saying it would be hard to do)

If i was to run, then I would run on a conservative platform.

1. Smaller Government while maintaining a strong National Defense.
2. Giving more power back to the states where it belongs.
3. Cut spending to lower the National Debt
4. Push for National Independence from Foriegn Oil but a. Drilling here, Drilling Now while working on alternative fuels
b. Building more Nuclear Power plants
c. Building more wind power plants.

I wouldn't IRL - too much potential scandal (mainly drugs...) in my past. But if I was going to, one idea would be:

The 'hardening' of The Commonwealth of Nations into a closer political and economic union.

Think about it -
The Commonwealth members have a combined gross domestic product (measured in purchasing power parity) of $10.6 trillion, 66% of which is accounted for by the four largest economies: India ($3.3 trillion), the United Kingdom ($2.3 trillion), Canada ($1.3 trillion), and Australia ($800 billion).

Those numbers are pretty good, plus we all have a shared history (as well as aspects of culture and language) together, which would make for a strong military and political alliance. Many nations in The EU have been trying to wipe each other out for much of their modern history. Also, the nations in the Commonwealth have a combined population of 2.1 billion, almost a third of the world's population. That's quite a workforce - with investment by the larger economies in the group into poorer nations, the potential for economic growth is massive, plus a lot of direct action could be taken to alleviate the suffering of the Thirld World. I'm not talking about aid handouts - I'm talking about boots on the ground restoring order, creating stability and overseeing civil projects which would improve and extend lives.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

In principle, I'd love to run for office, but the system of government in the U.S. is too horribly broken for anyone, well-meaning or not, to make a difference. I'm too much of an idealist to survive in a job that has no chance of success.

Never.

I couldn't be arsed having to keep 50% of the great unwashed happy enough to keep voting me back in.

Have to deal with the nutters who think that a federal member can fix a crack in the sidwalk and a councillor is responsible for the amount of money the defence force gets.

I would however love to be one of the political advisors. Not a spin doctor, as they need to be strung up and left to rot.

Hell yes.

Ideally, I'd be the nominee in a Safe Seat, so I don't need to worry, and then become a Back bench MP, meaning I have bugger all to do all day but say 'Rhubard' when the shouting starts and wave a piece of paper.

In fact, I'd rather be a Back Bench Opposition MP in a Safe Seat. Money. For. Nothing.

Would you run for office?
Yep, so long as I didnt have to go though all that ballot nonsense.

Why or why not?
Because a benign dictatorship is the best possible form of government. The ancient Greeks said so!

What would be your platform?
Democracy is for wimps.

I've considered running for office. You see, here in Australia the Federal Govt gives you get about $6 for every vote you get, to help run your political operation. The state govt of WA hands over another $5 or so dollars for every vote you get in a state election.

So I figure I run on some kind of generic popular platform, like Legalise Marijuana or Stop Speed Cameras, score ten or twenty thousand votes and pick up a cool $100k. This money has to be spent on operational expenses and the like, but everything there's always room for management fees and consultants to shift money around.

The risk would be actually winning and ending up having to spend 4 years as a pollie. Those guys work like 16 hours, 7 days a week and all anyone does is complain about them.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Scary? Ominous? Cant see why but hey YMMV.

Nah. Not in Ireland. I'd never make it. I'm not descended from anyone who was involved in the struggle for independance, I'm too honest, and I hate people a bit too much.
Plus, it would depress me terribly how little difference I could make. I much prefer my current job, where I get to make a big difference on a local scale.

Hold up, run in Canada or the US?

I guess either way it would be the same platform: High quality education (including free post-secondary education), high quality healthcare, free interweb for all (yes, there are people who cannot afford the interweb, and anybody who says that it is not a necessity in this day and age can try living without a toilet and refridgerator for a few months) and stringent limitations on the way that people can market things.

Of course, that last resolution more or less kills my chances of being elected, because the only way to win seems to be to engage in precisely the reckless mindgames that I would seek to abolish.

Personally, I just want to be rid of government as a whole, this is just the next best thing...

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

George Orwell is my hero.
