Subject: JJ's musings on new armies and new models - WD363

JJ manages something extraordinary this month, a WD standard bearer where I was mildly interested in the content.
The basis for his ramblings is that he's always asked "When are GW going to do new armies for their games?" To which the short response is apparently "We'd love to add new armies to our games, however, we're going to wait until we're confident that doing so won't compromise support for the armies we already make."
In the article, he goes onto say that he recognises that gamers/collectors have been frustrated/angry when their collections have been made redundant or if GW take too long to get round to updating a range of miniatures. Consequently, their new goal is to make sure they support (apologies for the caps but I think this is important) EXISTING armies really well.
Thoughts?

The problem is GW's marketing strategy already comprises army support. They either need to reduce the number of armies to match the support they can give or change the 5 year model. The current plan is broken.

Good point, but regardless of whether their plan (they have a plan?!) is broken, I found it interesting that he said that existing armies would be supported. This suggests that Dark Eldar, Necrons and the Inquisition can breathe easy for a while, don't you think?

My thought is that he is up to his usual BS.
Nothing like a little double talk to give the appearence that he's still relevent.
The fact that "He's always asked"... then goes on to say that a multimillion dollar or pound corperation can't handle the job.
Thats the Jervis Johnson we know and love, talking out of that hole under his nose and not really saying anything, as usual.

There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Kind of rare for him to admit that they wound people up by making stuff redundant though isn't it?

Didn't they say something very similar when 4th edition was released?
And yet here wer are, six years later and 4 armies still have 3rd edition codexes...

Not really. He has said similiar things in the past yet nothing happens.

I think he's got the 2009/10 miniature releases to back him up this time though. We'll ignore Space Marines because they always get new stuff, but Orks and Tyranids also got loads over the last 12 months (please don't grumble about the lack of Tyrannofex, the fact that the Nid model range expanded is surely enough?)

Considering the latest releases from the Ork Codex, I think that it's very encouraging that we'lll soon see Tervigons, Tyrannofexes, Harpies, and so on that look like their pictures.
Also consider the rate at which they're updating armies. Since 5th edition came out we've seen Chaos Daemons, Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and Tyranids. That's not including the 4th edition compatible codexes like Orks, Chaos Space Marines, and Eldar.
More to the point we don't see a lot of the griping that we saw back in 4th edition. I think that the new plan is going along swimmingly, considering what a small peanuts company GW is.

Given the suggested change of direction for Inquisition, no, not really. We plan to release and support Dark Eldar is not Dark Eldar getting releases or support.

And yet they continue to make LOTR. Still havnt even seen this game played. (I know it does somewhere but I hear that over and over again)
Im sure we can only imagine if those resources were put to task on the real core games instead of obsure units from the LOTR books. I mean those minis for the most part are badass true scale minis.

What decisions does JJ actually make? I mean, if he and the dev team really wanted to come out with a new DE codex and models, but their was a "business decision" by a higher up that DE wouldn't be profitable I don't think JJ could do squat.

I was unaware that 3 40k armies are still stuck in 3rd edition. At least 2 wfb armies were discontinued completel thru 6th and 7th( 6th edition saw Chaos Dwarves gone, Dogs of War got a WD list update and then got the shaft in 7th with no word about them at all).

Stuck in 3rd Edition perhaps, but not entirely abandoned with new material for Necrons and Dark Eldar appearing in Battle Missions, whilst Planet Strike makes a nod to both Daemon Hunters and Witch Hunters.
The absence of the Inquisition from Battle Missions though does imply changes are afoot there...

I rather like the changes to Necrons and Dark Eldar implied by their respective background sections in the rulebook. The Necrons as the ghost of a former civilization, carrying on long after life itself has fled, is a pretty good sci-fi tropes, combining notions of undeath and never-born.
The Dark Eldar? I like the spread of the port of the Dark City...

Ignoring for a moment that continued releases are probably stipulated in the licence agreement, LOTR has always largely sold to a different market than GW's other games. I think you would find that the majority of LOTR purchasers are either playing at home (Fairly sure GW said something to that effect based on their own customer feedback some time ago) or just collecting the miniatures.

Lieutenant Colonel
|
Hi all.
I feel sorry for poor old Jervis.
He starts off letting everyone KNOW , that he KNOWs what they want.
Then has to appologise for NOT doing anything about it, because the higher ups dont care about anything but short term profit.
I have a entire spread in a WD, where Jervis plans out the future of Epic Armageddon expansions ...'will be rolled out over the next 5 years'...
Corperate canned the entire SG range shortly afterwards!
Left to thier own devices the GW game developers WOULD connect with thier gamers more , and probably work with them like the used to pre PLC days.
But while GW corperate pull all the strings , expect more apologies from the studio staff, and arogance and indeference from corperate managment.

I don't think the need new armies.
The only exception to the above statement is ad-mech for flat out awesome modelling opportunities.
A return for the 'neglected' armies is what needs to be done in the short term at least.

Now, if they copy/pasta'd the Vraksian Renegades with all the trimmings(the Ogryn Berserkers/Plague Ogryn/Bloodhounds of Xorphax, etc) into the Chaos Codex--how would you feel?
