I just got back from seeing "The Crazies". It strongly reminds me more of a Stephen King sort of story than anything else. The guy sitting next to me brought his daughter, who couldn't have been more than 5. Some people...

How do you NOT know this is a gory horror film? Sometimes, I'll give people the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, my point of reference is Gremlins. "Oh, look, another ET-like movie..." and brought 5 year olds.

Anyway, was the movie any good? I'll probably not see it until it's on SciFi channel in 5 years, but just wondering.

I really enjoyed it. There were a minimum of those irritating jump cuts like in so many horror/action movies, and some really outstanding performances. And quite a lot of gore and violence.

I'd like to know that as well,I liked the original quite a bit (but of course I like most of Romeros' work) ,and was also wondering how this remake stacked up in comparision.

FITZZ, you seem to be rather knowledgeable on the subject of film. I like to think that I am as well, and no one that I know seems to be as into horror flicks as I am, so I pose to you this question:

What is the big deal about George Romero? I understand the whole "pioneer" angle, but I have to say that his films are extremely overrated IMHO. So I'm asking you, please, what is it that I'm missing?

@ Monster Rain.

Well, aside from my own personal love of zombie films, wich IMO Romero set the bar for,I enjoy the social comentary of most of Romeros' works (particularly his first 3 "dead" films).
I see a great deal of insight in Romeros' views concerning peoples (societys) interactions with one another, and I enjoy his sense of humour (mindless consumers (zombies) wandering aimlessly around a shopping mall).
I do however think that Romero is becoming some what repetitive in his works, both Land and Diary of the Dead are "less than great" IMO.

I saw the movie the other day. Personally, I thought the concept was fantastic... but there were typical "horror movie" scenarios that made me shake my head in expectancy, like when the sheriff and his wife kept insisting that they
Spoiler:
separate, the wife would ALWAYS end up in some sort of trouble and the sheriff would have to go and save her
. This happened at least four times, and it was getting to the point where I was thinking to myself,
Spoiler:
"if this sheriff can trace the source of a biological weapon and understand how it's affecting this town, why can't he grasp the idea that leaving his wife alone is a genuinely bad idea?"

also, the inconsistencies of the movie were distracting me; towards the end of the movie,
Spoiler:
the sheriff and a "crazy" get into a brawl under the semi-trailer, and the sheriff throws a whole pan of oil at the crazy, which would mean that the oil wasn't finished being changed... so how could the truck drive off like that?
and everyone knows
Spoiler:
that baby isn't surviving; how many car accidents and rough handling did the sheriff's wife experience? not to mention the stress of everything going on, being captured, etc.. that would most certainly cause a miscarriage, especially since she was in such an early stage of pregnancy.

but other than that, I really liked the movie. at some point, it turned into a "zombie flick" for me because the individual citizens all became crazed, collaborate, and become a collective force, much like zombies in which you really don't care about the individual anymore... but that part where
Spoiler:
the sheriff's wife walks into the baby's future room (again, they separate..) and those two crazies are there to attack is when it pulls me back in and makes me realize that these crazies were once sane, normal people, and they still have all of their memories.

sorry for the tangent, don't know where that came from. :'D

I figured that the guy would have been able to tell a little something about the movie from the poster with the bloody pitchfork and R-Rating.

I thought it was pretty good. Lots of stuff jumping out, head-shots, and fire. Good way to kill 2+ hours.

Yes, when we went adn saw the Mist (S. King movie) someone had brought several kids. They left after you could hear crying. I agree there needs to be a license to have kids.

How are these children getting into the cinema? My mate managed a cinema here in the UK and was constantly checking ID on older kids. No one with a small child would have been let in.

I went to see Mortal Kombat (the hteatre near me was only $3 during the day so I went to lots of movies) and some guy brought a 3~5 year old with him. The part near the beginning where they zoom in on the bad guys face and it turns into a skull made the kid flip out and start screaming. They left after that.

When I saw Pulp Fiction a guy brought his 10~12 year old son and his friend. Near the point where Bruce Willis goes back downstairs with the katana to find Ving Rhames being sodomized one of the kids got up to go to the bath room and the dad stopped him and told him to wait because this was the best part.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Re: Romero -
Romero set the bar for the genre- his delivery was innovative for the time, and touched on certain social dilemma that were taboo in a safe context. Combine that with the abnormal 'lady or tiger' endings and Romero tended to provoke a lot of thought.

My take:
This was a pretty well delivered, and although I had problems with certain plot-required aspects of the film it was quite enjoyable. It took an interesting turn from the normal fare in modern films: Everyone made reasonable decisions relevant to their position. The sheriff wasn't blatantly dumb, the military cordon took reasonable precautions - everyone didn't have a sudden moment of stupid. Glassing chunks of Iowa was (and is) quite possibly the best plan.

As for parents - some people are inherently stupid.
the good news is that the little snowflakes are likely going to survive watching the film, be scared, and grow up with their childhood traumas just like the rest of us did! One can only hope they turn out fairly decent people.

Why do people bring kids to the movies?

Guy gets ready to see the movie

wife says, take the kids

guy sighs and gets the kids dressed

I don't think its a question of why, but how are these children alloew to get in the cinema [sneeking in aside].

In the Uk the films certification restricts entrance, so 15 and 18 are the age limits on being allowed into the cinema to see that fill.

Do US film rating not work like that or are they recommended guidance only?

In America, unless a film is specified NC-17 (or X),children can be allowed admitence with "parent or adult gaurdian".
Personaly,I couldn't see myself taking my kids (8 and 10 years old) to go see a film like The Crazies, but that's my choice as a parent.
Also, many U.s theatres are some what lax about who get's into what,I remember as a youngster (13,14) getting into R rated films with no problems, and I'm assuming not to much has changed since then.

@ Notprop - as far as I am aware, film classification is in regard to supplying said item to a minor. So for instance, a ten old couldn't go and see the film on his own, nor rent it from the video shop. However, if said 10 year old was with a parent, guardian or appropriate adult, then that is no problem; it is down to the supervising adult not to take the child or allow them to view porn or watch violent DVDs.

As KK said, people need to start taking responsibility for their own actions and decisions rather than absolve all responsibility.

The X rating, which has been replaced by NC-17 is supposed to stop kids under the age of 17 from entering the movie. Supposedly.

Basicly a tale with no "happy ending",leaving the person to sort out for themself "what happens"next and it's effects on the characters.

I was in a big explosion/boom action movie one night on a date and a couple had a freakin INFANT with them. Low and behold it started to cry at the first "bang" and never stopped. The dad just got up and moved to the end of the row to try and get it to stop. Like we couldn't hear it wailing from an additional 10' away. Finally I said something snotty to them and they left. My date thought it was rude and they had a right to be there. We fought and broke up soon after, Heather Graham looks/huge boobs and all.

Perhaps you should have attempted to give the offending couple the " I'm going to choke the gak out of you" look until they left, then your date may have been unaware of your displeasure with them.
Of course I have a "thing" for Heather Graham,so I guess I may have tried to find a way to make nice.

I have to say that they just were not crazy enough. It could have been way scarier. I was expecting to much maybe just cause it was a romero remake I guess. It made good money in theaters but everyone that I know that saw it said it was basically lame.

About young kids in the movies....it all falls on the parent. Theaters do what they can to keep them out but if the parent or guardian says its okay, then they can pay for their mental situation later. Just as society will pay for it when they are a disturbed adult even later.

If you are on the wall about seeing the movie though, wait for it to come to dvd/blue-ray. You wont be missing out cause of the wait.
