Sometime ago I created a four legged dreadnought and got ripped from people saying how stupid it was or how bad it looked.

Here are some of the comments:

Clthomps said "Honestly that four legged Dread looks terrible. "

BlackdracoSLC said: " think that adding an extra section to each leg on the four legged dread would look a little more feasible. Right now the poor thing looks like it would have trouble walking"

and Limbo said: "Dread looks pretty terrible IMO, would like to know the fluff behind that one "

etc, etc

So it seems like the overall community is pretty anti four legged dreads. Some because of how terrible mine looked and some just thought it didn't make sense.

Well, I think it makes sense and here is why.

EXAMPLE 1:
ED-209
A two Legged robot about the size of a dread who was easily taken out because he couldn't even get down a flight of stairs. I believe if he had been given 4 legs robot cop would have ended up in pieces again like the beginning of the movie.

EXAMPLE 2:
AT-ST
This poor 2 legged sap was taken out by a bunch of teddy bears and some tree stumps. You don't see any AT-ATs being brought down by a tree, no, it took Luke Freakin Skywalker and a squad of Rebel fighters

AND 3:
I just really wanted to convert my dread a little and think four legs would look cool.

So here is my new progress on the four legged monster.

It was a pain. I had to cut everything off the front legs and rebuild the extension bars with metal and plastic tubing.

Then I had to replace the cords with guitar string (which does not bend has easily as I had hoped)

I didn't do anything to the back legs but I am switching to a different torso so the body won't be so high of the ground ( as compared to the original). I'm just waiting for the new dread to come out on Thursday or Friday and then Ill put that bad boy on.

Thanks, again for the comments. It really did need some more work. But, as for now, I don't intend to make any changes or go back to 2 legs. I just wanted to show my progress.

thanks

I think its a creative idea, and you shouldnt be discouraged.

The posing does look better in this version however.

Posing is certainly a bit clearer this time around. Good on you for taking constructive criticism.

All I can say is take the crits in stride.

If you put your stuff out for folks to see some will love it, some will not care and some will hate it.

I for one did not like it that much. Nothing hateful or mean it just did not blow up my skirt or kilt in this case .
I did like the originality of it though. Its always nice to see new takes on stuff.

Some of my stuff has been crit'd pretty hard. I took those and used the ones I thought needed addressing and used them to make a better build.
I was about 3/4s done with a deff dread build and due to comments and suggestions I am in the process of redoing it.

Dont take any negative comments like that as a personal attack. Folks have different views.

The bottom line is, do you like it in the end?

Oi!! Which Butt'n makes dis ting go!?!

The 2nd prequel to star wars had some 4 legged machines. Maybe check those out? Research always helps.

As for the idea, its new and may fail a little. Re-doing things always works out for the best. Its looking better already.

Hey I saw the original in your earlier post. I've gotta say I thought it didn't seem right but now you've readdressed the posing of it I must say I quite like it. Its an original and creative idea and when you part of a community like this they can be very hard to come up with, so congrats. I think its about time for a tracked one now though hey, lol

First off, I like the concept a lot. Full disclosure, I myself did a 4 legged Ork Deff Dread conversion from an armorcast model which I abandoned later (not because I disliked it, but because half painting models and then losing interest is sort of my thing) - so I'm a little biased in liking it. But I do. So far as the "fluff" goes - the detractors paid too much attention to the dogma they liked, and not enough to the game developers themselves stating in numerous places that they purposely left tons of holes and blank spots in the fluff specifically so players could create whatever they might enjoy. So in concept, solid.

In practice, I think a lot of the criticism you posted had less to do with the 4 legs, and more to due to the fact it was just sub-optimally posed. They were all out splayed weirdly. This new pose is quite excellent.

That being said, my suggestion (if you were inclined to mod it any more) for it would be that since the 4 legs also offer way more support, you should make it carry far more heavy weapons then a Dread typically carries. I'd suggest making a 4 barrel lascannon by stacking them, or at least, greatly lengthening the barrels by replacing the long straight parts with styrene replacements. I see 4 legs, I expect a good lengthy, beefy weapon to match.

As long as you're happy with it, who gives a Skaven's arse what other people think? It's a neat conversion, and I think you've re-posed it nicely.

I think the initial negativity stemmed from the posing, exclusively. Most folks here have the decency to say "not my cup of tea" instead of "it sucks" when it comes to out of the ordinary conversions they don't like, conceptually. A 4-legged dread could certainly walk, if built properly. Your first attempt would've moved more or less like 2 toddlers with stiff knees taped back-to-back and something that obviously impractical just doesn't look right. The new pose keeps the dense, stubby, clunky feel of a dread, but it looks like it could actually move. The added "realism" and dynamism really make it work. Now that it's starting to look good, I think you'll find most negativity is relegated to the realm of "not my thing."

Looks better now. Before it seriously did look like walking would've sucked. Now it seems slightly more viable.
I do have my qualms with 4 legs, such as slower movement and the fact that an AT-AT is like at least 8 times larger. Than an AT-ST.
All in all though, do what you want.

I'd try and make the body of the Dread more stout, it'd look nicer on these legs than the taller standard body.

The new pose looks significantly better than the last one. I have to agree with oadie, from what I saw, almost all of the negativity was related to the pose, rather than the concept itself.

to be honest, i didn't really like the first incarnation but adding in the knee joint and repositioning/converting the hips makes all the difference. your updated version definitely looks like it could work in real life and makes for a cool looking conversion.

My only criticism is that the legs are too close together. It seems like the back legs would hit the front legs when it walks. I'd suggest more room between the 2 ranks of legs. Look at Ouze's picture 5 posts up.

I really like the concept though, and think your dread is very unique.

Good job, over all.

What front armor plat do you like better? (the weapons are interchangeable they have nothing to do with the plates I’m going to chose)

btoliver311, you don't have to justify your conversions to anyone. You might be asked to defend a design decision but it's good you've responded to the criticism.

This is looking much better. I have to admit that the old one looked like you glued 2 pairs of legs together. My 1 suggestion is to shorten up the torso a bit, as it looks a bit too tall IMO.
