I've never done it on something as large as a Land Raider or a Predator, but I found a tutorial a while back for this.

Basically, you prime brown, drybrush a little red and some orange over the top of it, then cover that with the color of your tank or whatever.

Probably not the way the "pros" do it, but it certainly gets the job done.

I recommend the following:

Firstly my own PM Blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/244402.page - check the post midway down this page has a rusted predator in a metallic colour.

To put this to shame, I recommend the following masters:

The sheer brilliance of infilTRAITOR - all weathered and rusted tanks.

And of course, check the awesome L Bursley's gear and his website:

Last I heard, Space Marine armor of every variety cannot rust, including vehicles.

I also doubt plasteel can rust without the influence of nurgle.

The tamiya weathering powder kits work really well. The kit with the rust pigment also includes the soot pigment awesome for exhaust and gun barrels.

For really heavy rusting and pitting try drilling/gouging a few holes ang gluing a few grains of sand to the affected area before painting.

That was exactly how I did it on my nurgle vehicles.
I used a my dremel to remove some plastic, and then I super glued very fine sand that I had grinded in a mortal.

Then I painted it all black, basecoat with boltgun, wash with badab black, wash with 50/50 blazing organde/snakebite leather, soft drybrush with boltgun again.

"What do you do for recreation?"
"Oh, the usual. I bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback."
