Hi everyone,

I left some models at a friend's house who is a smoker, and now they have a strong smoke smell to them. Has anyone had this happen? If so, how do you remove the smell? I have tried soaking them in a mix of warm water, dish soap and oxyclean to no avail.

Being a smoker myself i know which smell you are talking about. In one of my (many) attempts at quitting it was the one thing i noticed most. And when i finally came home after university i noticed this smell on everything i owned. Unfortunantly to my knowledge the only thing that will remove it is time. It will get less and less, however if they are unpainted then there is a small possibility that if you paint them you will lock the smell under the paint since it has settled on the plastic/metal. Though i am not sure. A test would be to simply spray a hand ful of them black and then see what happens.

Try soaking them in a mixture of white vinegar and water, of course then they might smell like vinegar, but soap and water should get that smell out. And I presume it will be nicer than smoke.

Bonus solution, smoke them more but with hickory!

I had luck with Febreeze on bare metal, but other than that particular Blood Bowl team, I have gotten lucky with not having this problem.

I did have a couple of RPG books that came from a smoker, but I found that leaving them out in the garage for a month removed the aroma.. wrapped them in crumpled newspaper and changed that every week..

uhh i had the same problem some dnd book just reeked of smoke. I ended up buring ensence in my garage with the book nearby. It kind of helped, but it still kind of smelled.
All i've got to say is maybe now you've got some incentive to help your friend quit, i mean really wasting your money on tabacco and little plastic men

I am given to understand that bicarb of soada removes smells from things.

It has the added advantge that you are not pouring anything over your stuff that will damage your paint or models, and it can be used as a dry powder, meaning you can just brush it off later when it is done, and it does not take forever (should probably take about 15-20 mins, from what I have seen (damn you "how clean is your house?"! ) .

You could try (re-)varnishing them.

Back in my table-top RPG days when I used to have to go to the crappy club where everyone smoked like a chimney, I'd get that smell all over my coat and I just couldn't stand it. What I'd do is just leave it in the back seat of my car overnight with an open box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and that pretty much did the job.

You can also make your own Fabreez spray, minus the hideous girly scent or plus the manly scent of your choice.

Take equal parts
1. rubbing alcohol of atleast 90 proof, usually available at the druggist.
2. distilled water.

Mix together in a spritzing/spray bottle of your choice.
Use it.
It will kill the odor, damage nothing, and your game box will not smell of smoke and since the spray has no oppressive "flowery", "breezy", "beachy", "woodsy" scent it will not smell of eldar, either.

Sodium bicarbonate works wonders.

Another idea I used with a car I bought from a smoker: I put 4 dryer sheets (one under each front seat and two on the back seat) to absorb the smoke smell and it worked in a few days. I switched out the sheets twice and let the car air out. It might work on your models if you put them in a regular cardboard box large enough to hold them along with some dryer sheets.

Leave them protected but outside for a day or so to air-out. Let nature do its thing. Should drastically reduce the smell. Wont permanently but will help alot.

Hit them with cologne. Maybe some spray deodorant. test that though I have no idea what that will do LOL.

I suppost you could also dumb baking soda in their transport case as well to "eat" the smell.

Moth Balls or Arm and Hammer baking soda.

put them in a box with an open tin or small box of the baking soda or mothballs.

Other then that, put the books in a bag with those small pine blocks that rid smells.

I'd be curious to learn how did the Arm & Hammer work? That was my best guess - the others mostly mask the smell, not absorb or remove it.

ok.

You take the books and put them in a box, then you spread the Arm and Hammer all over the inside in the books. Let it set for a couple of days and then later on shake the books out, and vaccume it out of the box.

Baking soda is the sodium bicabinate that these guys are talking about.

It absorbs the smells.
