Hey all,

yesterday on my lunch break i quickly popped out to go pick up my pre-ordered collecter's copy of Final Fantasy XIII. Damn i was excited and the second half om my shift took to damn long, but hey, i made it.

I installed myself in my sofa with a six pack of beers, enough smokes to last a couple of years and my controller.

I've always loved the Final Fantasy games so i had high hopes for this one. I played for about 4 hours yesterday, and i have to say, the game is absolutely stunning from a graphical point of view. The typical final fantasy style of story telling and character building was offcourse present as well.

Qua gameplay, it leans more to final fantasy XII, which is allright, allthough i personally prefer the final fantasy X, turn based gameplay style.

Either way, i'm still gonna enjoy this game, because they always have a special feel to it.

I made this thread in the hopes other people would like to share their thoughts.

Thx for reading.

first impression was very good , took some time getting used to playing only with the leader , but with the use of the paradigm system , it still feels kinda turnbased...

Just beat odin myself, pretty bad ass game, albeit a little damn hard... figuring out all this stuff is pretty confusing at first. Autobattles your best friend tho, no way you can keep up manually inputting commands usually @_@ (unless you set battles to slow)

The paradime system is by far my favorite aspect of the game. It gives you the feeling, and well the ability, to more directly control what your team mates do in combat. It let's you make each player play the way you want without having to babysit their commands every second of combat.

While the game is fairly linear so far (6-8 hours in) I have no complaints. I have not really even noticed that im not allowed to go off on my own because I have no desire to, the plot and storyline are keeping me into the linear gameplay.

Graphics are astounding.

I only hope I can complete it before GOW 3 hits next week.

Unlikely unless you play non-stop for the week :( supposedly the games 60+ hours with side quests... *sigh* I'll probably wind up putting XIII on hold til I finish GOW 3, then go back lol... and all this is preventing me from leveling my rogue as well!

I preordered this from amazon, paid extra for immediate delivery and it's late.

I complained and got some automatic email telling me things are out of their hands and I should wait until the 21st to contact them again.

It was a birthday present, fething arseholes.

That is odd, most reviews have complained about the lack of side quests.mini-games compared to the previous games, as well as being much more linear and shorter. It isn't 8 hours short or anything like that, but shorter then the average FF game.

Reviews I read talked of lack of mini games and side quests in first half of game. It is supposed to open up a bit after the half way point.

So I picked it up yesterday and played it for about two hours. I've heard alot about how different combat is for this installment, but it felt pretty familiar to me. It seems like it's just a really sped up version of the ATB System, which has been around since FFIV. Roles and paradigms are very similar to the job system. The crstarium system looks alot like the level system from FFX. It all seems like a logical evolution to me.

I've heard its 30 hours without sidequests. I'm not too sure how reliable he is, but the guy at the game store told me 53 hours (unusually specific number) without sidequests. He was reading the strategy guide the whole time I was in the store, and I'd describe his excitement for the game as somewhere between fanatical and obsessive.

Naw, every review I've read says its got assloads of side quests around chapter 11ish when the game opens up. Til then the games hella linear.

I've been playing almost 13 hours and I'm on chapter 7 or 8 (they don't tell you, you find out when you start back up). The story was hella convoluted at first, but now I'm starting to get what they're talking about.

Also, the games even longer when you take into account all the times you'll likely die (some of the bosses are a pain in the ass to stagger when they're hitting your guys for 1/2 of their HP lol). I'm enjoying the game thus far, hopefully I can reach chapter 10 or so tonight after work. Yes, its shorter than most FF's (excluding 8 and 9, both of which were around 40 hours with side quests) but its got the best battle system so far. It hasn't made me throw my controller like FFXII did on a few occasions, but I haven't gotten to the side quests yet.

You can find out which chapter you're on by seeing what unlocked last in the datalog. I'm currently on chapter 7 (or 8), having a blast with it so far.

I love this game, but i sometimes find myself missing FFX like a lot. It must be some form of nostalgia.

The combat is fastpaced, but i sometimes just enjoy inputting the commands myself instead of repeatedly pressing "auto-battle"wich ofc then results in a lower rating.

It's an evolution ofc and i'll have to adapt.

Question, i reached Odin yesterday at the end of chapter 4 i believe, and i'm really struggling. By this i mean that i tried 5 times and got my ass handed to me. Any tips?

I just got past him last night. One of the tips it shows in the data log after you beat him:

Spoiler:
"Odin Yields to those who heal injured allies"

Hopefully that helps.

I'm loving the game so far. Although I'm currently stuck on Hecatoncheir. Hopefully I'll get a strategy figured out. It is very linear but its telling a story after all. If it branches too far off it would take away from that.

I know. I've had it for less than a week and I'm to chapter 13. I can't stop playing this thing. What team have you guys been trying to stick with? Mine is Fang, Sazh, and Vanille.

EDIT: I just beat the game. Amazing ending scenematic. Has anybody else beaten the game yet?

Working on the chapter 11 side quests and grinding up my party. Me and a couple friends noticed once you get the Alexander eidolon the game suddenly shoots up in difficulty a couple notch. Like aside for boss fights this is the first time ive had to switch to paradigms using sentinal to tank while i regain my standing. Currently using Lightning, Feng and Hope.

i'm at chapter 10. I generally use Lightning as party leader and then Sazh and Vanille.

I'm still excited

btw, i don't know why, but i have developped a dislike towards the use of Sentinel, i just don't like it.

Yeah, I was the same way too till i got to chapter 11 then sentinal became needed in a fair chunk of fights
