Well I have been wanting some titans in my army for a long time so I decided scratch-building one would be the easiest way to go. So I (over-ambitiously) tried my hands at using the templates from " http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/206339.page " however due to rl and at that point me having little patience and it being almost a year back now I stopped after doing the head, shin and interior body part. Another reason I stopped was because I thought that card may well not be strong enough and did not want to assemble it all only to have it to collapse a few minutes later. So this brings me neatly to my position here. I guess that if I don't say this someone else will I know it was stupid to try to take on a warlord with no previous scratch build experience. Anyway my question is where should I start? How should I work my way up. I have some templates from " http://www.goldenboltersociety.com/paperhammer40k " I collect space wolves and have done for several years. So as you can probably guess my interest is directed towards super-heavies. So any ideas where I should start and what materials I should use?

Where should you start? Anywhere you feel comfortable with. A Warlord is a big project but if you want to build one, just give it a try. One of my first scratch built projects was a Warlord http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/253829.page The trick is just getting some good plasticard instead of paper or cardboard. Most good hobby stores should have a supply. To cut it I use a pair of heavy duty scissors or a hobby knife. Just get some materials together and dive right in.

Wow nice titan. One of my biggest problems is sourcing materials as I am yet to find a shop that sells plasticard or foamcore near me. I live between Northampton (location of my closest GW) and Rugby. they are by far the easiest places for me to go to but I haven't found materials there except card. and that's the thing I tried the warlord but I didn't feel comfortable with the number of folds I had to do it was a nightmare to make one shin. took me a over an hour to get it cut properly and much longer to get it to glue.

The stuff they make real-estate signs out of is meant to be good - not advocating you steal a for sale sign, but you might be able to get hold of some?

ok, if you want to start easy, start using plasticard to make terrain. Buildings are a lot easier than tanks and titans.
2ndly try looking for HIPS (High-impact PolyStyrene) in your area. I googled it and Atlanta and found a wholesaler within a 20 min drive and got a 4"x8" sheet for about $30 US.

My problem with plasticard is that I can't find it in my local area. I will try asking in GW tomorrow as I am going to have a day of battles but I don't know of anywhere currently. On another more positive not if by HIPS you mean that high density blue or pink polystyrene I can get that fairly easily (in stupidly massive blocks annoyingly) from a hardware store fairly near. I guess I could try carving out some bunkers from whatever materials I can get my hands on. Also I think that if I do get round to giving a warlord a shot I'd try using that high impact stuff for the skeleton if it is what I think it is.

Start with a warhound if you are making titans.
Feet first and work up.
Don't rush it (it will be a long job!)
Measure twice cut once.
Sharp blades are better than blunt as they need less pressure.

cool thanks for the advice so fire. I had a day of gaming today only got 2 games in though :( but both 1000pts I was using my wolves. 1st battle 500pts nids + 500pts eldar I slaughered them. 5 dead squads and none of mine dead ( had 4 men left from my 15 bloodclaws ) second I lost. curse you chaos. anyway I asked one of the people in the store who used to go there a lot and now works there if he knew anywhere that sold plasticard and he said there was a place just up the street so I will try and find that probably next weekend. thanks for the advice so far everyone. I will also have to find my knives. what should I use to glue plasticard by the way?

As a substitute for plasticard, I know Stump uses "For Sale" signs. Here's a few of his creations made from these:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/237624.page
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/244914.page
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/274218.page
Although it does look like he ended up needing some "genuine" plasticard for rods and such... see this link:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/276448.page
Hope this helps! I was really impressed how he just went for it and started creating stuff with no experience. Apparently the material in those signs is the same / basically the same as plasticard, and cheap
