Hello all,

As you might have seen, I'm updating the Sister of Battle costume I made for my GF. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/284267.page
1st thing I updated was the bolt pistol, I made a matched pair. Now I'm going to start work on the new backpack, a Cannoness backpack..this backpack..

So, in order to make the flame I'm going to use a faux flame style set up. a fan with silk "flames"...
I have a 12v red LED computer case fan which I'm using as the base for the faux flames and my question is this.. I need to power the case fan and ideally some more colored LEDs
My question is can I just hitch it up to a 12v lantern battery with a switch and will that be strong enough to run it and the LED's at full power, or should I try and run it with two 9v batteries...?

I really don't know much about resisters or capacitors, so I'm hoping to get some help here.

Thanks,

Finnlock

Run it in 18v (two batteries) in parralell they will last a long time (10 hrs or so), and probably be an awesome effect. I also suggest grabbing some of the flickering style yellow LED you can get at target I do lighting design for a living so if you need some extra help feel free to e-mail me at sanford@sanfordworth.com

Awesome, I was hoping that was going to be the case. I want to put an ipod nano in there with some speakers as well, little sound and lighting for this costume

The flickering LEDs from target...they like tea lights or something?

Thanks for your help

You can get electric "candles" that flicker randomly in an attempt to mimic flames. For example.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I have links like that too, but they don't really tell me what I need to know, which is how to build the darn thing...

Your girlfriend isn't Lady GaGa, is she? I think dressing your old lady up as a 40k character is disturbingly kinky, but I mean that in a good way. If she looks hot as a battle sister, than more power to ya! My ex would make a better ork, or perhaps an ogryn...

I just noticed the link to your pictures, WOW! That costume is great! And the girlfriend ain't half bad either! Great work, especialy on the details and the weapons, the flamer you made from the supersoaker is bitchin! Kudos, man.

Looks like you may be better off just buying an existing fixture and cannibalizing it. Doesn't seem to be too expensive.

I was thinking te same thing, just replace the current flames with longer ones for more effect.

I lol'ed here at work, if you want to go that route just get the latex paint out and go as a demonette.

Though for a future costume the female shapeshifter assasin would be epic.

Yeah, I recall seeing a trio of lasses in demonette's from a con recently, I think on here. Haven't got the link.

There was a 12 year old inthe background who thought all the xmas's had come at once

That's where this whole Idea started, I did in fact buy a few of those to see if it would work. The problem is they are not strong enough to push the longer flames, I tried it and it just didn't work.
I want to use multiple strands of the silk for the flames and that is most def going to need a stronger fan.
