Hello. First thread of mine in the Painting and Modeling section. I guess I should start.

I was thinking of starting a new IG army, but I want to go a step further than before. This isn't really important, but it might help you guys if you understand the backround.

The entire army is airborne.
They are not a typical IG formation. They are (basically) a personal bodyguard of sorts, extended into a force of several hundred.
Becuase of this, I would like to do 2 things.

1) Give them Carapace Armour. As bodyguards to some higher up or other, they should have access to armour a touch above the average soldier.

2) I would like to severely alter their helmet look. Something to make them look more professional, more elite, more royal (snub). Because of this, I wanted to endow them with a very royal-looking helmet. One that was effective enough, but had a little bit of something to match their (no doubt justly earnt) elitist attitude. I hoped for the end result to match some of the more historic helmets of old.

A Centurion helmet

The Corinthian Helmet.

Or the Greek High Crest.

I've got a few Kasrkin lying around, so I'm tempted to use them as the bodies (giving me Carapace Armour) But I'll need to get rid of those hellguns.
As for the helmet modifications, at first I saw the Sicarius model (where he holds the helmet) and thought perfect! But I realised I couldn't becuase...

1) It's obviously a Space Marine helmet.

2) I'm not too confident in my ability to not screw it up.

3) Buying 30-40 Sicarius models just to get the helmet is slightly cost-ineffective.

What about the Dire Avenger helmets? Could that work?
Does forgeworld sell anything that could help? (I've checked, but I might have missed something)

I'm a little reluctant to use greenstuff, as I've never been able to use to any great sucess before. If you're willing to run me through it though, I'll certainly give it a try.

Any help is much appreciated.

I noticed these a while ago:

http://www.amazonminiatures.com/catalogue/index5.asp?rName=Heads

but no one seems to have any experience with them; the casting doesn't look that crash hot either-

might be worth a try though (they are pretty cheap)

@mal: I'm interested, but I have no idea what they really look like. (Or even if they'll be the right size)

@Million: Any bitz sites that you personally would recommend?

If I were to keep the Kasrkin head, and only attach the crest, do you think that would work better than a bareface helmet?

yep just found some details- They're 25mm scale- so I guess they'd be too small :(

Whfb had mercenaries with such helmets but they were Metal figs (one body and a weapon).
Maybe warhammer ancients or any similar historic wargaming system
could be à source?

Ooooh. Those look great, ph34r!
But is 28mm to small for 40k? (Maybe I can use just the crests...)

40k is 28mm scale.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

As for the suggestion to use that amazon company, Id email them first. Im pretty sure I tried buying from them but email first to see if they were still in business (their last update is from 2009) and I never got a message back, would hate to see you dump money into a black hole. But I second the suggestion for the maxmini heads, they would fit perfect for your idea.

If you like a single type of the helmets, you can specify in your order for them to give you whatever selection you want.

I love the Max Mini heads myself. I used them for my Slaanesh Warriors of Chaos.

Here's a couple other options:

I have a bit of a problem.
I really love that I've got a large amount of options for my heads, but as for the rest of my bodies, I need a bit of help.

As I've said, I've got a quite a few Kasrkin lying around collecting dust. I was hoping to use them as the base for my IG bodies. But I need to get rid of their darn hellguns. (Or modify them into shotguns) Any suggestions?

P.S. Should I just get the crests of the helmets from these models, or replace the Kasrkin helmet entirely?

get a fine grain, almost pointed tip for a dremmel, then just grind them off, touch up any small mistakes with greenstuff. For the shotguns, i've seen people use maxmini shotguns that look awesome!

No, no shields.
They'll be airborne vets in Valkryies and Vendettas. For 1000pts I'll only need about 25 of these guys. Thanks for the help.

I like 'brush' helmets, but wouldn't winged helmets be more appropriate for an elite airborne unit? (Small symbolic wings, not something huge that look like the wearer is trying to fly )
