Hypothetically, if you guys were to want to apply to FW (on a freelance basis), what sorts of things would you make for your application?
How big? How many?
Bearing in mind they will be doing warhammer soon, would you think it would be wise to do some of that and 40k? Or only what interested you?

Didn't know FW did freelance. But, following the hypothetical, I'd sculpt basic troops to show I have the skill to produce figures in line with what GW makes. I'd probably also produce a few large creatures or seige weapons to demonstrate that I can model as well as sculpt.

I'd contact them and find out first. They might not even take unsolicited sculpts.

The Power Cosmic has a good point. A lot of creative industries hate unsolicited work... It leaves them open to a lawsuit if you do (for example) Chaos Dwarves, send them to them, and then they release something that is similar. It could provoke a lawsuit in which case they have to prove they did theirs before yours, which gets ugly.
OTOH, having a portfolio does make sense. maybe focus on non-GW sculpts of some sort? If they're good, I'm sure a small minis company that does more 'generics' would consider them.

As some one who regularly looks at artists/sculptors to hire, I'll second what Balance said. A Portfolio of unique and interesting sculpts showing a wide range is more likely to get you hired.

Interesting, I have sent them an email to see what they say. Better to know in advance.
I had not considered that they would actually want to sell models made during an application.

It's the reason why we don't see the sculptor's "application" models ever really made by GW/FW from what my understanding of it is. The sculptor technically retains the right to it, rather than the company owning the rights to the model.

Indeed. I know for a fact that Catalyst Game Labs will not EVER put to print or make official anything that is ever posted on their forums from the fan base, simply because of the legal trouble it can cause. Probably the same with most companies.

So in other words, don't make models anyone will ever want!

And what does that have to do with anything about application sculpts or Forge World?
That's a quality control issue for Games Workshop, at best--and badly interpreted design sketches made into model form at worst.

The joke is that the plastic minotaurs are of such low quality that one would not even submit them to a company as application sculpts from their portfolio. So when Grimstonefire made the comment about one not supplying sculpts no one would want as one's application portfolio, I made a humorous connection between the two.

Oh no, I got the joke. To put it lightly: the minotaurs were a result of a disconnect between the design staff and sculptors. Games Workshop tried to move Beastmen away from being "Beastmen and other Mythological Beast Friends"--to "BeastMEN".
The Minotaurs are a...rather poor result of that idea. They were intended to be men altered through some random acts of mutation through the Winds of Chaos, rather than being their own separate species like Trolls, Orcs, and Giants.
But yeah, I got the joke. It just wasn't funny.

I don't think they do anymore, but that's actually how Chris Fitzpatrick got a job with the Studio. Then he went and got the 6th Ed Dark Elf assignment nearly all to himself.

Yep, and when he left the company they still had a bunch of his sculpts to release that they had to hammer out arrangements on since he'd done preliminary work before he joined.

The Razorgor certainly has my head befuddled.
But it has a sort of wacky charm to it. Like a train hitting a cow on the track, and the cow surviving with a ridiculous look to its face.
