Old threads were bumped to pages beyond the first, so forgive this horribly rude move.

Anyway, armour concepts are up! Chiggity-check it here.

Not bad - they look a little short and chunky to me, but not too bad.

Hmm... well, I thought they looked ok. I was about to say it must be great doing a movie when all of the concept art has been done for you, but I guess you lot think they've got it wrong anyway.

The sad thing is, EVERYTHING but the proportions looks bang on to me.

Then again, it does state these are just insignia and colour references, no the actual final models. And they would be the things I'm liking

"Marion! For Gods sake, you're going to die!"
"Ah, but then I'll wake up in a magical fantasy world, filled with virgins!"

Can I just say . . . Eww? They just look horribly wrong. That one concept picture looks good, but as soon as they've moved onto actually making the images they've messed it up. Come on how hard is it to get a basic 3D CGI model, when there are billions of marines in the world?

Surely that would be the easiest bit to get started with? And yet that's the bit that looks the worst! Not feeling hopeful for this so far.

It amazes me to no end just how utterly stupid some are. The pictures clearly state "Not final 3d models. Colour and insignia reference."

Surprisingly I can read! =O

But this doesn't stop the fact that getting the proportions right for something that already has tons of art shouldn't be hard. Especially for professionals. I know it's only for colour and insignia, but you've still got to create a base to put those on, so why make a bad base, when it's so easy to make a proportional base.

I don't. They look like your face would be squished up against the faceplate. It is too narrow, it looks like. I'm sure they'll notice that before making the final 3d models.

Yeah and the fact that "real" marines will NOT look the slightest similar to GW minis.
Looking at a GW mini there is no way super muscled arms and legs will ever fit into those tube thin arm and leg armours.
You need to seriously bulk up the limbs of an SM mini if that muscle gorilla is ever going to fit inside it plus be protected by thick armour.

I like them, although corect me if I'm wrong but I thought gold was second company colors and Sicarius not "Serverus" is captain of the second company, with only one captain per company that doesn't make sense or are we going into movie where established caracters don't exist.

Remember though the GW minis are not to scale of the actual person inside. It that were the case you would need models much larger than guardsmen and Rhinos that would dwarf Leman Russ tanks. I will admit that in a CG movie I expect them to get the porportion correct since they don't have to mass produce these guys and it won't cost any plastic. We'll have to wait and see. Speaking from someone in the CG model building industry it is easier to rip out something that is somewhat close to your end goal for concept art. If you spend too much time agonizing over the details you may lose your producer's interest and money.

You got to remember GW has been making GW proportioned marines for decades, these guys have been making normal human proportioned models and will have to work really hard to overcome that.

They are trying to reach out to the heart of the player base. Making marines fat just makes the majority of the audience feel in touch with the movie they are watching.

Gold is the color of the Second Company, but it is also the trim color most people think of when they think Ultramarines, despite the White of the 1st Company looking better. They are not replacing Sicarius, if you looked at the shoulder you would have noticed a giant V on the pad. This is the 5th Company Which should have Black Trim.

Of course but my point wasnt unit comparison scale.
Its the actual looks of a naked marine that also needs to fit inside thick power armour.
The whole SM mini is way out of proportions and doesnt look like even a normal human could fit inside it (the armour).

The minis are out of proportion one way, and then these pre-production reference shots are out of proportion in a completely different way... way too barrel chested, arms a touch too short, stance bad.

I know a lot of you will go nuts saying it's clearly marked that it isnt the final 3d model, but still, I hope they pay a bit better attention when they actually get on with it. To be honest, even for a sketch it's a bit alarming, after all, its not like a professional artist suddenly forgets proportions unless he is doing a final... sketches can be very good too you know...

:S

Here's hoping they blow all us nay-sayers out of the water with a few production stills in a few weeks/months!

Proportions aside, I really like the way they did the Ultramarines Badge on the Apothecary's shoulder, working in the Double Helix logo.

Okay, here's another question. Is the groin/butt armor actually shaped like tighty-whighties? I thought they had a cup and a butt flap and the, ahem, perineum area was only covered by the flexible under armor stuff. Do they actually connect?

Except for the Space Marine helmets in this artwork. They are not long enough front to back(i.e. the wearers face is going to be *mashed* into the front grill). Side to side they are fine. Fix that one issue and they are not bad.

The front view of the leg /feet position makes it look like they are standing on their toes though. The detail on the models is good though. Note that the waists are bulked up too, which cuts down on the "v" shape of the Space Marines' torsos. Makes them all look more barrel-chested.
