Guys, if you look at human development, as bodies get bigger, heads are proportionally smaller.
- A fetus in utero has a head that's half it's body length.
- A newborn has a head that's about a quarter of it's body length
- A 7-year old would be roughly 6 heads tall.
- An adult is roughly 8 heads tall.
The idea that a Space Marine grown beyond adult norms would have a head of 1/8 their height is nonsense. I'd accept 1/9 to 1/10 as more reasonable.
Now, Space Marines are massively bulky, unlike Shaq & Yao. NBA players are tall, but they're very skinny compared to a SM. So, considering the huge body mass / bulk increase above and beyond Shaq & Yao, the heads will proportionally tiny by comparison to their bodies.

Bigger. Than. This.

Not. By. Much.
That SM is exactly 9.5 heads tall, so I think it's right on target for what one might expect for an actual SM.
Note that a normal human will only stand about as tall as the top of the SM's abdomen armor.
I've scaled the SM to match a Kasrkin. And a Sister.

I refuse to believe that heads work on a logarithmic scale. Babies look weird specifically because their heads are the wrong size. They are that big because they are in a stage of development wherein they have fully formed heads but underformed bodies. This isn't some sort of math equation where growth patterns correspond directly to decreases in relative headsize, that would result in them eventually having no heads at all. Humans just grow their heads first them the bodies fills out. Space marines are enhanced adults, they aren't the next step in human growth. When you can't see over your own shoulderblades it makes things like being useful awfully hard. Unless the process by which every other bone in their body expands leaves out their heads than there is no reason why it should not also be bigger. This is Zangief. Zangief is sweet as hell and still has almost correct proportions. This is the hulk. Space marines are Zangief, not the hulk.

You're using exaggerated cartoon characters from two completely different non-40k universes to make a point about human growth and ratios for 40k Space Marines?
If we're going down that road, I think Space Marines are perhaps more like the Hulk than puny Zangief. Zangief is just a big human. He's not a artificially-grown super-soldier. Hulk is way beyond ordinary human norms. At best, a Marine is a half-step between Zangief & Hulk. Which means he should still have a little peanut head.
At least my example is all canon artwork, and uses the official scaling of a 8' Marine vs 6' humans.

Yeah well batman owns them both.
The Crimson Fist in the picture above has ridiculously long legs and oversized lower legs. Actually why is the armour of a marine so big for the lower legs anyway, is it extra ankle protection?

It's uber-powered armor presumably containing an exoskeleton.

JohnHwangDD wrote:It's uber-powered armor presumably containing an exoskeleton. Actually it works off of a musculature-like set of synthetic fibers that contract when electrified, though yes, by definition all powered armors are exoskeletons if they can self motivate though it wouldn't contain one given that EXOskeletons exist on the outside of things. Not that you actually answered his question about the bizarre and non sensical leg proportions of space marine armor.

It's an armored exosketon for the wearer, if you want to pick at nits. And the word for what you describe is "myomer".
I chose not to pull stuff out of thin air to answer the ankle question. But the answer would be - the ankle is a heavy-load-bearing joint requiring complex stabilization and articulation, along with primary motive force transfer.

The concept has no official designation beyond electroactive polymers and most designs reference the material being used as the name.

We're neck deep into geekdom here. "Myomer" is a very effective shorthand that all wargaming geeks should know.
Next, you'll pick nits at the phrases "hyperspace" and "warp speed"...

Stephen hawking has used those. In books. No respectable materials engineer or biologist has ever typed "myomer" into their little speak and spell in anything but the kitchen table where they run their battletech RPG.

FM
Gold is the color of the Second Company, but it is also the trim color most people think of when they think Ultramarines, despite the White of the 1st Company looking better. They are not replacing Sicarius, if you looked at the shoulder you would have noticed a giant V on the pad. This is the 5th Company Which should have Black Trim.
Actually, the V means that he is in the 5th Squad of the appropriate company (in this case, the second as the gold trim shows).
As Ultramarines aren't too long lived, it's easy for there to be another captain or two leading the second company in the 41st millenium either before Sicarius, or potentially after Sicarius gets killed or promoted to the 1st Company or Chapter Master.

First played 40k during 2nd edition, missed out 3rd and 4th, and haven't played 40k since 5th edition - but still read and occasionally paint |

1. When you're that tall, you need extra protection for the bits that can be reached?
2. He's in the special 'Snotling stomper' Crimson Fists squad.
3. Imperial daycare worker?
4. Crimson Fists secret genetic flaw - Degenerative ankle disease
