I'm sure that more of you than care to admit have invented a space marines chapter or five. This thread aims to be a compilation of all the chapters already canon (I don't even pretend to know all of them) that are currently in service to the Emperor, plus one invented by each dakka-ite who cares to share. Let's see if we can hit 1,000!

Here is my SM contingent;

Dam its been done.

Das Imperium - Ultramarines sucessor. Formed after a schism within the Mortifactors. The Mortifactors, shortly after forming from the 9th Chapter of Ultramarines almost came undone due to the new direction the chapter master was taking them (as far away from the Legion they saw rejecting them as possible). The new chapter split almost neatly down the middle as a result, one half following the new ways, the other being expelled and eventually becoming Das Imperium.

that sums up my attitude on people custom chapters. I'm not trying to bash on anyones fun, if you like to make up chapters more power to you, but as far as i'm concerned no matter how cool your idea is its been done.

Sad is the day when new chapters are not allowed to be thought up. We would have to try and find new ways of sneaking them in. It would take some sort of Tactical Genius though.

I don't think Custodians count as Marines, do they? They're pretty unique, IIRC.

And my chapter is, simply, Alpha Chapter (loyalist splinter of the Alpha Legion, which Alpharius allowed to exist so that he might have some men on the other side)

If you include all the non english speaking people who have chapters as well I'm sure the list already exceeds that number.

Perhaps though when it does get to 1000, a chapter gets chosen at random to become renegade or succumb to chaos or gets destroyed. It's then up to someone to defend said chapter and argue why such a thing didn't happen. Wouldn't it be a bugger if the Ultramarines or one of the other big name chapters disappeared from the ranks of existing chapters?

No, it's been stated that custodians, while very similar to astartes, are not astartes. I assume this means that they have a different selection and development process too, anyone know more on this?

Left out the Doom Eagles and the Blood Swords the Doom Eagles are a Ultramarine chapter successor and obviously the Blood Swords are a Blood Angels successor chapter but im not sure which founding either of them are from

My DIY is the Imperial Tigers [13th Founding DA sucssessor]

The chapter I came up with is the Narcoleptic Marines

May add:

- Golden Dragons
- Crimson Swords
- Sand Vipers ( WS )
- some "nameless" DA successor ( their name so fierce guarded , not Even I get to Know it).

Of course not! That would be just silly!

More likely, the Imperium really only says that there are 1,000 chapters for propaganda reasons. Despite how important they are, their relative autonomy makes the space marine chapters perfectly able to slip out of the sight of Imperial officials. The Imperium probably just lost track of how many there actually were, but since 1,000 is a nice round number and 1,000,000 space marines sounds better than 1,000,000 space marines give or take, that's what the Imperium says.
