Automated Rubric Marine of Tzeentch
|
Hey guys... time for another P&M blog! Some of you may remember I had an Emperor's Children blog a while ago. I lost steam on that army (also real life got in the way), which is unfortunate because I have only two models left to paint then I've 1000 points (a Sorcerer and a Dreadnought). However they aren't my army of choice...
My army of choice started about 14 years ago when I first got started into Warhammer 40k (at the young age of 10, haha). My dad had bought me the Warhammer 40k starter set (2nd edition; Orks and Space Marines). The second I got home I tore the box open and looked at the amount of awesome stuff that was included. I read the rules and looked at all the pretty pictures until one such picture caught my eye. I instantly fell in love with Chaos. The next day I was back and my dad bought me the Chaos Codex (which I still have in really good condition. I love this book!) and a box of Chaos Space Marines. Judging by title of this thread I can only assume you are able to correctly guess how I painted them. This started the Chaos craze for me that will no doubt last until I am rotting somewhere in the warp...
So recently I've decided to go back to my roots after much "soul searching" (kind of ironic based on the Chaotic nature of Chaos ), and thus my new Iron Warrior army has been born. I slaved over a list that I thought would be both fluffy and effective. I know I have Rhinos (not really a siege weapon...) but they are pretty much required in todays 40k, which isn't a bad thing. So here's the 1500pt list that isn't being changed
Chaos Lord with the Mark of Tzeentch & Daemon Weapon (I'll explain this in just a minute)
5 Chaos Chosen with a Champion, Icon of Chaos Glory & Autocannon
2x 3 Terminators with a Reaper Autocannon
2x 10 Chaos Space Marines with Champion with Power Weapon, Icon of Chaos Glory, and an Autocannon all mounted in a Rhino with an extra twin-bolter
3 Obliterators
2 Vindicators with Daemonic Possession
You'll notice this is mostly a shooty army. I chose to do it this way because most of my armies have been centred around close combat. Also autocannons are pretty much my favourite weapon in the game and the general idea is that they take care of the troops while the Obliterators and the Vindicators take care of the rest. Also since Chaos Marines basically have 2 attacks each, they can hold their own in close combat fairly well too. I'm not really explaining my tactics very well but that's not what this is about.
I do want to explain my lords equipment, however. Since this is a shooty army and Iron Warrior warhosts are led by Warsmiths, I couldn't take a Sorcerer and feel good about it. I checked out the Daemon Weapons and found that the Tzeentch flavour is perfect for my needs. How could I incorporate that into my list? Well that is simple; I decided to write my own special character fluff (but using Codex rules; basically just changing names and such around). The idea is that he has a Kai Gun. Following the Daemon Weapon rules, if he rolls a 1 when determining how many shots he has it could basically be a more sinister version of "Gets Hot!" since it ignores armour saves. The +1 invulnerable save from the Mark of Tzeentch could be that he has improved bionics. At this point I haven't fully written out fluff but that's the basic rundown.
So you're probably quite bored with reading my banter and I'm sorry it's all over the place but right now I've had very little sleep this weekend (girlfriends birthday) and perhaps way too much food ( mmm sushi), but I'm really excited about this army and can't wait to start painting. The basic scheme for this army won't be anything overly thrilling but I've done it before and found that it looks great. Very rugged as if they have been in the trenches fighting... like all good Iron Warriors should. I'll be following this order of operations: Prime black > drybrush Boltgun Metal > lightly drybrush Chainmail in some spots > paint trim with Shining Gold > highlight trim with Burnished Gold > wash all with incredibly watered down Chestnut Ink > wash all with incredibly watered down Black Ink. After that it's just little details like horns and the weapon and some of the 'caution tape'. It'll be fast and furious but it'll get the job done. What's that? You want pictures? Sorry to disappoint but I've no painted pictures yet! Though to show you a preview of what's to come, here is a picture of my lord!
He needs a bit of GS to fill some gaps but other than that he's pretty much finished (in terms of assembly).
I'll be on a huge assembly/painting spree tomorrow after I get back from the gym, so hopefully I'll have some pictures up tomorrow. I'm going to re-take some pictures of my Emperor's Children at some point and I'll post them here. Sadly I don't think I'll ever get around to finishing them even though I should.
So stay tuned for more updates! Oh and before I forget; the reason I'm doing this blog is because the Dakka community was an invaluable asset in getting my Emperor's Children done (me not completing them was my own fault due to real life) so any help, encouragement, criticism or whatever... it all will motivate me to keep updating this! Also sharing is fun

Great gun, what kind of basing are you thinking of, if you really do want them in the trenchs think a ton of mud, scraps of wooden board and rusted plate it would add a ton of flavour.

Thanks guys. As for the bases, I have a few options. Originally I was going to do the classic style (check out the Farseer in my gallery), but then I thought I could do them the same as my Emperor's Children (which are grey... I should really consider taking pictures soon!). I decided against that, however, since I don't think it would help the look of the model at all. Blackhand, I like your idea with lots of mud and scraps and such... maybe even a bit of razorwire or something strewn about. I think I'll settle with that one

This looks really nice, Im subscribed.
You might want to try reading the first short story in the book "Heroes of the Space marines", It is all about an Iron Warrior warband- could be an idea for a theming off cut from the army in the future.
Also Red corsairs fit well with an IW army...its the phrase "Big guns never tire" thats putting me there but on the tabletop they would work well together, the RC a fast moving assault force while the IW are more defensive in many ways!
Looking forward to this

I'll definitely look into that. I'm in the process of reading Storm of Iron right now and so far I freakin' love it.
Just got back from 2.5 hours at the gym, and picked up my new (and expensive) suit...
As for updates on the army; there's something very awesome about using the heads from Chaos Knights and Chaos Warriors from the Fantasy range on Chaos Space Marines... pictures will be posted soon!

Oh man those are awesome! Though I'm just using the heads from the WHFB range. If I choose to expand my force past 1500 points I'll definitely consider those.
I've 1 more model to assemble and I'll be taking some pictures. *preps drybrush for abuse* Automatically Appended Next Post:
Bam. Pictures. Enjoy!
They don't have the shoulder pads or backpacks because having them off makes them easier to paint.

No significant updates today other than I primed all those guys last night. After I primed them I noticed I didn't drill the barrel out of one of the autocannons and I forgot to GS a gap on my lord. I fixed that afterwards so it's not a problem but it was still annoying that I missed it.
I've to meet my girlfriend after work even though I'd rather be painting! RAWR!

I'm going to get some done tonight but I have to get up early to drive mum to work... when I get back I fully expect to go back to sleep and then paint some more before it's off to training. warriors of mayhem wrote:i have to say Ive really been digging this thread. i love the gun conversion. but i noticed your running a lot of infantry do you eventually plan on running a super heavy vehicle list?
Thanks! It looks so much better primed too. I can only imagine how brutal it'll look painted! It's actually not that much infantry when you think about it. It's just pretty much ALL the infantry in my 1500 point list (save the 6 Terminators and 3 Obliterators). On a side note; my Rhinos came in today so now I'm just waiting on the Obliterators and I'll have everything! karimabuseer wrote:NOICE!
Thanks! Actually, thanks to everyone that's posted so far; believe it or not getting over the starting hump is the hardest for me (and the final one but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it) so thanks for helping keep me motivated. And yes you may have noticed a pink Eldar model in the background of one of those pictures. It's totally not mine; it's my sisters. I told her she can paint stuff if she will play games with me, and I just so happen to have an "extra" Eldar army laying around, haha. Looking forward to crushing it soon EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention; My Emperors Children models are painted very similar to the scheme in your profile, warriors of mayhem. Oh, I'm in the military hehe.
My Obliterators came in so now I own my entire army... just onto painting it! I got some done last night and I'm just eating lunch now but I'm going to paint some more once I finish this delicious sub. Om nom nom! Automatically Appended Next Post: BAM! Test model. This took a little longer than I anticipated to paint mostly because I was experimenting on what exactly I should do. In the end it's pretty easy, though the horns were the biggest pain in the as since apparently my Kommando Khaki is very watery.
Anyways, it's pre-wash/highlight (which will take no time at all) but it's just here to give you an idea of what it might look like when it's done. Enjoy!

Very watery Chestnut Ink followed by very watery Black Ink. I'll go and do that now... haha. Automatically Appended Next Post: The ink is still a bit wet and I need to do a little touch ups, but this is what it looks like: You can see how much better it looks with those coats of ink. I might try the new washes right out of the pot on the next one to see if that yields similar/better results. Either way, the goal is to get it to look close to this: Dark silver with the gold trim. I think it looks better than the bright and shiny silver of most peoples (including GWs) Iron Warriors.

IMO, the washes are much better to use, with inks they always dry quite shiny but the washes give a much better matte finish...also, on the weapons put a heavy wash of Gryphionne sepia, it looks better than with a black wash....

In the end it doesn't matter since I give everything a coat of matte varnish once I'm done (thus no shine). I'm more interested in how the pigmentation and fluid dynamics differ.
Though I think I will toss on a coat of sepia on the weapon just to differentiate it a bit more from the rest of the model.
I'll post another picture soon with the result. Thanks for the suggestion

Once he's done, absolutely! Though I think I'll be saving him for last
I just added the Sepia to the bolter on that model and it looks just a tad better, which is better than nothing. I also touched up all the spots I needed to and I am now happy with the result which means tonight and tomorrow I'll be painting non-stop
I haven't decided if I want to do all the infantry in one go or take breaks and do things like the Vindicators and/or Rhinos. I'm leaning towards getting all the infantry done then doing the tanks, and finishing off with the Obliterators and Terminators. *ponders*
