LOL...

Promiscuous women are responsible for earthquakes, a senior Iranian cleric has said.

Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi told worshippers in Tehran last Friday that they had to stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves.

"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he said.

Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade.

Mr Sedighi was delivering a sermon on the need for a "general repentance" by Iranians.

"What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," he said.

'Disappoint God'

Young Iranians sometimes push the boundaries of how they can dress, showing hair under their headscarves or wearing tight fitting clothes.

Mr Sedighi also referred to violence following last year's elections, which occurred when thousands of - mostly young - Iranians protested against the result, as a "political earthquake".

"Now if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to confront such a calamity but God's power, only God's power. So lets not disappoint God."

More than 25,000 people died when a powerful earthquake hit the ancient town of Bam in 2003.

Seismologists have warned that the Iranian capital Tehran is situated on a large number of tectonic fault lines and could be hit by a devastating quake soon.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said many of Tehran's 12 million inhabitants should relocate.

There are plans to build a purpose built new capital near Qom.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

What about straight men?

I'm missing the logic here.

If men are helplessly tempted by women against their better judgement, let society be run by women then they will be too busy to go around tempting men, and men will just get on with their work because they aren't being tempted.

That isn't possible, Amenididadojaad himself let everyone know that there were no homosexuals in Iran.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I was replying to the bizarre non sequitor raised earlier about lesbians when the cleric in question was specifically talking about women tempting men. Lesbians typically have no interest in tempting men, other than in a professional capacity, and most men aren't tempted by plaid and bad haircuts.

Just been looking out of my front window at a pair of tarts totering down the street in high heels and short skirts, I definately felt a trembling, not sure it was down to tectonic plates shifting though...

On a serious note how the hell can someone actualy come out with this nonsense and be viewed with any kind of credability, as said above if promiscuity really did lead to earthquakes then Newcastle city centre on a Saturday night would be one hell of a dangerous place.

I genuinely feel sorry for the majority of Iranians who are not living in the dark ages and shaking their heads in disbelief as a collection of religious nutters and Achmed the loon seem to be jibbering any old gak that pops into thier heads and are hell bent on starting a war with the US/UK/Isreal

No, he had it right. The outrage over Iranian posturing doesn't capture the attention of other states the same way it seems to grab hold of the US, Israel, and the UK.

Because the rest of Europe doesn't read the news?

I can say that pretty much everyone I know here feels the same.

You might, but your government doesn't. Not according to their official statements anyway. Its a sensible position, given that the Netherlands doesn't have much in the way of the ability to project force. Add in the fact that Iran hasn't explicitly threatened war with anyone, and it starts to make even more sense.

I may be wrong but didn't Iran threaten to, or at least express a disire to "wipe Isreal off the map" at some point last year?

I think they technically said that Israel "should be wiped off the map", or something like that.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Well, this is probably one of their more reasonable policies.
