So as the title says im considering playing space wolves when i finish my DE. So i was wondering what exactly i should buy/model/field first in my lists. I looked through the codex and i loved the lore, along with two special characters: Njal Stormcaller and Lukas the trickster (if only because i am such an utter donkey-cave and Lukas seems to be like me ) i also really liked the idea of having alot of blood claws, since i love good melee troops. so yes what is the WAAC lists, and some of the more fun lists if you wouldnt mind showing? Automatically Appended Next Post: donkey cave.... lol i love this site sometimes...

I just started these guys as well.
I would start by deciding what you want your army to do.
I started off with 3 ten man squads of troops with rhinos. I also have 15 blood claws in a land raider crusader with the Ulrik model from GW... They really need to make a few Wolf Priests models along with the Thunder Cav. I'm still gathering all my heavy support but from everything I read. Once you go Grey hunters you never go back.
Grey Hunters Rock.
BUt realy its going to come down to what you wanna Do.
I'm buying a long fang unit with a razor back and I am going to get some TYphoon speeders for back up.

yes i've noticed lol. I love anything that can multi task, specially troop choices. and i've never played against SW but i've heard there a tough opponent so i want to try and have fun with it after i get my dark eldar in order (which may extend to next fall since thats when i heard they may be coming out) thankfully the airforce is coming along nicely. anyway im not really sure what to buy, other than lots of razorbacks, long fangs with missile launchers, grey hunters, and lukas the trickster/Njal

Well, Razorback Spam is obviously popular with them.
You can also do an all Termninator army with Logan, which is very fun.
From my experiences, Rune Priests, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs, Predators, and TWC have been the best units.
If you like BCs, take 15 in a Crusader with a Wolf Priest. They can destroy almost anything charging.
Logan, Njal, and Bjorn are all great characters.
I don't use the Razorwolves list, but its one of the best.

Generally yes. You get diminishing returns on hoods, and even with its awesomeness, Living Lightning by itself isn't worth 100 points.

It would depend on who you play against, my brother plays them and he usually takes two rune preists and Logan as his HQ. Living lightning is pretty much all the anti transport weaponry you need, he shacks them up in deep field objective with a 5 man Grey Hunter unit and just pops / immobilizes rhinos. Its also really good at killing low armour save models like orcs, and can instant death guard units.
As for troops Grey Hunters are probably the best troop choice in the game. Either run them in ten man squads, 9 + 1 Wolf Guard if you want the extra leadership, in a rhino or 5 + 1 Wolfguard in Razorback. I don't like the second option though as I find the razors die quickly and then the squad is too small to do much. Which I guess is why they take like 9 squads in that setup however.
They can be really powerful and you can't really go wrong on their heroes, they all pretty much rock. I've had and seen really good results from 10 man greyhunter squads with two specials in rhinos with multiple Longfangs in the back field. The long fangs kill the transport and then the Grey hunters disembark and either plasma or flamer the riders. If they get charged the next turn you should be looking at 30 attacks hitting back at the unit that charged you, which should be really depleted at this time.

Hi guys - I'm just starting wolves myself too.
I notice most people seem to favour rhinos and razorbacks over drop pods. Whats the main reason for this? I was planning on a load of drop pods to drop my grey hunters into rapid fire range early on

My guess would be that podding in leaves you were you are, and you're hoofing (or pawing) it from there. If you're playing a shooty army, that may be fine, you do some shooting and then assault. Against something like the new BA or my BT, if you pod in, you're going to be in nasty assaults right off the bat, without the advantage that you'd get by shooting up those good assault units before engaging. With rhinos/razors, you can gauge the other army's progress and stay far enough away until you're ready. Space Wolves really shine in close range fire fights, but they'll struggle against a dedicated assault army if they don't get their shooting in.
That's my take on it. And sorry about the hoof/paw joke.

"Very good" units in the codex: Logan, Ragnar, Njal, Bjorn, Rune Priest, Wolf Guard, Arjac, Lone Wolf, Grey Hunters, Thunderwolf Cavalry, Long Fangs
"Good" units in the codex: Ulrik, Wolf Lord, Wolf Priest, Wolf Guard Battle Leader, Dreadnought, Venerable Dreadnought, Iron Priest, Wolf Scouts, Blood Claws, Land Speeder, Fenrisian Wolves, Predator, Whirlwind, Vindicator, Land Raider/crusader/redeemer, Rhino, Razorback, Drop Pod
"Ok" units in the codex: Skyclaws
"Bad" units in the codex: Swiftclaws, Lukas
This is what I've gathered is the general consensus amongst Space Wolf players, Skyclaws are ok as a fast attack force when paired with a wolf priest with a jump pack, but they are far from great. Swiftclaws are only slightly cheaper than space marine bikers, while they cant fire if within 6" of an enemy unless you spend a rediculous amount of points putting a wolf guard or another IC with them, at which point they just become an expensive unit of guys with worse survivability compared to normal biker marines. Getting hit on 3's by just about everything sucks.
Lukas is just far to expensive for what he does, I reallllly wanted him to be a good choice, I preordered the model and used him a few games, but sadly he just cant cut it.

You know, what you wrote sounds a little silly, saying that Skyclaws are better than Swiftclaws. The cost difference between giving a character a bike, and Jump pack isn't that pronounced for one, you gain extra toughness, more reliable relocation in the form of toughness...
Granted, Thunderwolf Cavalry is better in most builds.

Give swiftclaws an attack bike and you'll see why they're worse than skyclaws. Bikers tend to carry meltas to hit tanks. BS 3 bikers are NOT ideal for tank hunting.

Logan and Long Fangs is a very interesting combo. Lascannons that get Tank Hunter make that Monolith / Land Raider not look so tough. Multi-meltas in a Drop Pod with Relentless and splitting fire to take out two targets can really mess some armies up on turn 1.
And Terminators as Troops is so wrong. Particularly when you can make several of them in the 30s and not as expensive as vanilla Terminators. The more the better.

I'm thinking to run this very list. I am considering running either TWC or Huge Blood Claw Pack with a Priest in a Land Raider. The jury is still out on this one.

Space wolves are a solid list.
Long fangs with missile launchers are ridiculously cheap in comparison to other heavy weapons squads.
TH/SS are very overpriced. If you go with Logan + Terminators stick with quantity and keep them at the minimum 33 points.

Just treat them like chaos terminators. An occasional 15 point chain fist won't break a unit, but anything going past a power weapon and combi weapon will add up in cost very quickly.

Granted though, if I'm bringing Blood Claws, I'm giving them an attached Wolf Guard, or Character *anyway*. In this case, I'd consider the extra point of toughness, and extra shots before assaulting said enemy unit, to be worth the tradeoff. Oh, and Turboboosting to get the turn-2 assault...
