Hello, I'm pretty new here - just posted up in the Introduction section. Anyway, this is my first piece to show off, some might have seen it elsewhere, but for those that haven't, here's a 10cm bust of a Cyborg type demon I'm working on.....

WIP Stage 1

WIP Stage 2

At it's current stage the face on one side is done and i m currently bulking out the volumes on the other side ready for some serious detailing....

Comments and crits welcomed.

Looks great. Any specific type of deamon/ inspiration for the design? Looks kind of familliar in a generaly fused sub-culture/Giger/Babylon 5 way
Mybe its just my twisted imagination, but I see both eldar and tyranid there apart from deamon (and dont get me wrong, I really like it).
Looking forward to the progress

Well, I can tell you that it is definately not inspired by GW, but most certainly by the art of giger, the predator and planet of the apes. GW design draws heavily from already established films and other media, very little originality exists in their armies because they are aiming to strike a cord with the pop culture that their gamers enjoy. I suppose i like the traditional looking demon - big horns, meaty chin and lots of teeth best of all, ie very "khornate" if you are thinking along GW terms. I have alot of chaos models which were heading for a khorne paintjob but now i might go nurgle instead - be a long time before i get to that though This design encompasses elements from aliens, predator and the gorillas from planet of the apes (they always scared me as a kid) but really the face i have sculpted is straight from my head and all i did was play around sketching some shapes, textures and ideas straight onto the head to help inspire some drawings. I never got as far as a sketchpad before i knew it one side of the head was done and i must say i am very happy with it.

I love the skin texture, both on it's on in the sort of pebbly bits and how you've wrapped it in and over the mechanicals. Definitely giger. I can picture it in a dark greens to black scheme already.

I just wanted to say i have uploaded my best gallery pics to dakka dakka now, must say the way its all handled here on this forum is very cool - good job whoever is responsible for that feature!!

Keep your eyes peeled for pictures of the face tomorrow, I will need some opinions. i am just sculpting the teeth now (nearly done) and moving around to the opposite side of the face. The teeth will not be sharp, mainly due to avoid too much rip on the mould when the resin is pulled but also because its fits in with my design and is different to the typically sharp toothed demon. It helps make the sculpt look like a brute. I am also working in some veins now I have a body building mag in front of me I can start doing that tonight. I tried a different technique for sculpting ultra fine veins, most people stick thin rolls of putty into a little trench cut out of the sculpt on larger scale work. On this sculpt it is made just be cutting the line in the final shape and then using simple sculpt-fu to reblend the putty to a raised vein edge. Looks pretty cool and works much better on an already textured surface that you don't want to ruin. Might do a little tutorial one day when i'm not doing the 1000 other things on my to do list.

Okay, this is the last WIP photo set before the completed bust, so any opinions at this stage would be good, especially if the face looks suitably cool and fits in with the rest of the design. There is a jelly baby in there for scale comparison....

Not so sure about the bionic eye (I assume that is what it is?).

Think it is just too plain compared to the rest. Perhaps some extra gubbins on it, or some evil runes/symbols carved into it? As well as some extra definition on the lens?

I would also suggest larger teeth

Otherwise the detailing and skin etc looks fantastic.

Thanks silver, I appreciate the feedback. The front canine will fill that little gap you see between the tooth next to it, the rest of the teeth will be normal teeth, the mouth looks gorilla like and brutish, which I want to emphasise as part of this creatures character. The area around the eye is just meant to be plain metal, part of the skull, there is alot of texture going on and this needs to be balanced with plain areas that can be painted in metallics. The eye/lens is not quite finished yet, so more refining and upper lid to do yet. Thanks mate.

The client is happy with it so all is good and i can start the other side of the face now. The next lot of photos will be of the final piece, hopefully by early next week. Thanks for looking.

Hey Gorskar, nope I won't be painting it, when its done its off to be cast. I'll get a free cast of course but I want to keep it as a plain resin to go in a cabinet.

No jelly babies here this time as I ate them all yesterday, anyway.....

Here is WIP 4 - the final photo for this WIP before all the finished shots. It shows the other side of the face. There is a little more work to do on it, the left canine and tidy up the bottom lip, bits of smoothing, final checkover and then its ready to be shipped on out and uploaded to my cmon gallery. And oh yeah, have to bake it lol.

Right well, here he is - nearly done. I am going to start again with the tongue as the one in the pics below is alittle big, but I am pretty happy with it overall and it is certainly the best of all my sculpts to date. There is a few things I would change given the time again though, all part of the learning process I guess. But as the client wants him now, and I will probably change the resin copy I get of him before painting and leave this original as done.

Thoughts and comments/crits welcomed.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm glad you like it! Really this is a mangled inspiration. It started life as a piece of concept art which didn't have enough detail as it was based around a human face, more devil than demon so some ideas were thrown around to turn him into a cyborg and make the face more demononic with ripped flesh and exposed elements. So think terminator meets planet of the apes meets the elephant man!!!

Hey Stokleplinger! Yeah I get around the mini forums as well as the forums for the larger scale stuff. Minis is where my interest in figures/busts/monsters etc started!!

DOOD!

That is very nice. I don't really see it as "hobby" quality at all. I'm sure you shop your portfolio around to film effects houses right? Proportions and balance are all good -- I don't see any real symmetry problems. You haven't included any straight-on shots, so I can't tell how far to his left he is turning, but the weight shift gives him a nice sense of energy that sometimes isn't seen in a bust.

I don't know how serious of a critique you actually want, but this looks like the work of a pro-sculpter, so I'm going to refrain from vague praise and be more specific. But to clarify, I think this is very good, and if the finished product improves on the WIP as much as I suspect it will, I think it would be a commercially competitive product as a resin kit.

The one thing I think you really have to look at is the steel rod that forms(?) his right clavicle. On the end that points towards his sternum, you can see the termination of the rod. I think you should form some flesh over that end so that it looks like the rod continues underneath the flesh. Perhaps extend the muscle tissue down the road an inch or so, so that the eye allows for a connection between the clavicle and the sternum.

Personally, I don't like the tongue. It's too over the top for me, but it also isn't really doing anything. I would suggest having it go more to the left to continue the rotation of the head. Also, the tongue seems to be growing out of the bottom of the mouth instead of out of the back of the throat. You could lift it up a bit so that it is not attached directly behind the teeth.

For what it's worth, I liked the eight thorns on the back better when they were empty holes. I felt like they had a "plugsuit" cyborg kind of feel to them. My favorite part of the piece is the brass grommet at the top of the spine where the wire feeds through. If it was up to me, I would ask for those eight thorns to be replaced with more of the grommets -- possibly with some wires trailing out. As "horns," there doesn't seem to be much of a relationship between the eight horns and the exposed spine -- have you worked out how that all connects together under the skin? Maybe he has a triple spine?

The spine is very, very nice -- excellent construction. I assume you are going to finish inserting the steel rods under the flesh so that we can't see the ends of the rods?

I like the variety of rods and cables you used in the exposed area above the right clavicle -- looks very "organic" in a techo-organic kind of way. Especially because the wires curve about a bit and that one smooth wire crosses over the other -- nice detail. The wires in the right shoulder are much more plain, although that almost looks like bundled muscle fibers.

The skin texture is very good everywhere, although it's inconsistent in aesthetic. In some places it looks reptilian, but mammalian in others (which for a demon, isn't a problem. My favorite part is the curly vein on the back of the right shoulder.

Is this a master or a one-off? If it were a one-off, I would be really tempted to leave the bare metal surfaces unpainted.

Just a random thought -- more spines erupting from his check bone or jaw (or both) might look good.

I love the laces on the back of his (her?) head. My fingers itch to touch those.

I'm very interested to see the final.

Cheers for looking people! And thanks SpacePanzee, thats exactly the kind of comment I was looking for. Here are some answers to your points and suggestions.

This piece is for a client, so it will be produced as a limited run resin kit. Two or three tongue options being the only additional parts. The tongue is being remade at the moment, the one in the photo is scrapped. The tongue attachs correctly to the bottom of the mouth, feel inside your own mouth and the tongue muscles are very close to the teeth. The clavicle i did slightly differently as i liked the central sternum i did not want to make the connection to the clavicle too prominent but the fibres at the end of it do run around to the sternum part. check here for how it actually connects http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gray325.png - mine is different design thats all. Artistic license lol. The horns are what the client wants so I am not at liberty to change them, although i like them and wouldn't anyway, thats the beauty of this sculpt - it is so easy to think of conversions for it. I have mine already planned! It would not be difficult to get rid of the horns if you didn't want them. One is broken now which i quite like, a little bit more damage to it to tie in with the damage on the front. The spine is exactly that so the rods are not going anywhere - they are merely mechanical vertabrae, its just an exposed back design really. Again in a conversion you could quite easily skin it over, make additional muscle attachements etc. All simple things to do if you wanted.

I'm glad you like it, I am just waiting to hear back from the client now. Hopefully this one will be finished and in production soo!!!

Again, thanks for taking the time to examine it in detail. Appreciated.

Finally I have the last batch of WIP Shots. The first photo shows the tongue options of which there are four now. I am not sure if the client (daemonscape) is going to offer a choice or include them all with the bust. The photos below show some new adjustments, see what you think. The horned ridge is up for debate, the sculpt shows two options, the original horns/bone bit but the new one I like much better, it is just a tentacle type fatty area to break up the texture and allows some patterns to be painted. So you can do a side by side comparison. I like this much better myself, maybe I have been watching too much star wars/farscape babylon 5 but tentacles and aliens go to together perfectly. Well hope these photos meet with approval, they are not good as there was no outside ambient light, taken late yesterday evening. I would have posted them yesterday but I fell asleep on the sofa with my little dog curled up in my arms

Thanks for looking!
