So, I ordered some resin bases off Ebay the other day, from Fenris games (Sulaco bases, good for space hulk terminators). 2 days later, I got an email from the seller apologizing for the "lateness" and that they had posted. Shipping within 48 hours is not "late" to my thinking, but OK, great.
They arrived today. Great condition, too.
How is it that this guy can send these bases from the UK and have them here in 3 days, and everything I get from Forgeworld takes a solid 3 weeks? I mean, the last thing I got was weathering powders from them, and it was nearly a month, so we don't have a fabrication time issue.
Long story short, I guess at this point FW had conditioned me to think anything ordered from the UK would take a month. Not so, so if you're a US shopper reticent to order from the UK from experiences with FW, FYI, I guess.

Not every UK seller uses Royal Mail.

I must say I've had very good experiences with the Royal Mail. Heck my Tau army came in a few days and there was a heck of a lot of stuff there

When you receive a parcel look at the postmark, which gives you the date of posting.
Then you can judge if it the postal service or late posting.
Don't forget that international parcels go through the Royal Mail on the way out, and through customs and the other country's postal service on the way in.

It actually came via Royal Mail.

It would have come by Royal Mail until it reached the airport, then by an international carrier.
Once it reached the USA it would have gone through customs and been carried onwards and delivered by the US Post Office.
Unless it was sent by Parcel Force.

I think it's pretty easy for traders to blame Royal Mail so they can be lazy with dispatch.

My experiences with the Royal Mail are never very good.
Orders from GWUK take forever to arrive. Orders from GWUS usually arrive before I receive the order confirmation E-mail. Orders from Maelstrom, even when shipped, take a while. Wayland same deal.
Forge World is worse however, as they don't even ship for 4-8 years, and then it takes another month to get there.

How long is 'a while' with Maelstrom, do you find? I've received relatively large orders in 5 days before, with free, uninsured royal mail.

That's because GWUS uses an independent, international shipping company for even their smallest orders(the USPS charges out the arse for the stuff that GW ships) versus using a federally operated mail system.

Royal Mail are actually very good domestically. Pretty much anything sent first class form UK mainland to UK mainland can be expected next day these days.
As Killkrazy points out it's down to delivery standards in your own country.
