GW wrote:We are looking for someone to join the 'Eavy Metal team.
As part of the 'Eavy Metal' team you will need to be a strong team player. You will have the ability to work well under pressure whilst maintaining flexibility and delivering within deadlines.

The role will suit someone with an eye for quality and a professional approach to work. You must be willing and keen to learn from senior figure painters. As a trainee you will have the opportunity to develop skills and techniques which will ensure you can produce inspirational painted miniatures. You will need to be able to take critical feedback well and to act upon it to improve your skills.

CLOSING DATE: Friday 14th May 2010

SALARY: £12,500 per annum

To be considered for this role we would like to see six recent photos of Games Workshop models that demonstrate your level of technical painting ability.

If you would like more information then contact Catherine Hamilton, HR Advisor, on 0115 900 4060. Should you wish to apply for this role please email your C.V. and covering letter to: hr.recruitment@games-workshop.co.uk quoting ref 99

I was going to mock the salary, but I'm not sure it's that bad for sitting around painting miniatures all day. Anyway, it's not for me, but there are a few people on Dakka who are handy with a paint brush.

$20K US per year.

More than I was making at my old job. Won't be able to buy a 6 bedroom mansion on it but from what I hear about UK that's a not too horrible wage.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

You could live on it if you were in a house/flat share. I'm guessing that there would be a lot of free GW stuff, so not much spending on the hobby either.

I always dreamed of somehow being able to paint minis for a living, but I make too much to give up my job and work for 20k us$, even if it is just to paint minis. This would be a realy cool job for a student or younger person, or someone living with their parents, or even a retiree. Does sound like a truly excellent oportunity, to get paid ( even though it isn't much ) to practice your hobby. Oh well, maybe when I retire...

12,500 for painting minis is a fairly good wage I think, if you cost out how much a fast painter could make if they were freelance on commission. Maybe I am just miscalculating that based on me being really slow.

Would be a bit of a boring job though? Not to mention tiring. I've done 6 hours straight painting now and then, and its surprisingly tiring, and that would be less than they do in one day, let alone every day for years.

Sculpting freelance for them would be a much better job, especially as anything they rejected you could probably cast and sell in large numbers (within reason, depending on how close it was to IP). Whereas with painting it is one mini at a time.

Wow,this would be cool if I could paint better. I paint okay, but I'm sure they're looking for someone who's been in golden Daemon or something.

20k per year is good for a teenager,I'll say that!

Assuming it's 40 hours per week (it could ver well be less) that's less than minimum wage here. I don't know what the cost of living is like in Nottingham, but even if you love painting you've still got to eat.

Edit: I'm assuming that since they're quoting an annual salary this is meant as a full time job.

hrmmm 70k a year, great insurance, and a 2500 sq ft home vs 20k a year painting minis and what would be a most definate divorce.... ya no thanks. I knew painters didn't make much but wow that is understatably cheap.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Do GW entry level painters also get a hefty discount for GW merchandise? You'd probably also get sneak peeks at whats going on or word from the grapevine...maybe find out how the DE are doing?

If I lived in the UK I would apply in a heartbeat and pour my heart+soul into that job.

Currently though I make about the same salary at my call-center job, and I paint commissions while at work, act as a band manager for a bit of local talent on the weekdays/occasional weekend, and tune cars for the local racers when someone gets new toys for their ride. In total I make a good deal more than what they are offering, all the "extracuriculars" under the table of course. The experience and knowledge from working as a painter for GW though would be worth every penny lost.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

Lol, £12,500 is not the minimum wage in the UK. Somebody working in Asda (UK Wal-Mart equivalent) would be very happy with 12K. I think I was on slightly more as a duty manager for Odeon Cinemas, hence my comment that you could live on it (although that was 7 years ago).

It's a trainee position. You could then sell your 'own' minis using the GW as substantial Nerd Street Cred. Plus, a lot of these guys jump ship and form their own companies. If I was a young 20 something pothead in the UK or EU, I'd totally apply.

As long as you don't have a family and a mortgage, it's a perfectly livable wage. GW have pretty good perks, too, by all accounts (subsidised cafe & pub, free gym, etc.), and you can bet that if you're painting minis for them for a living, you are not going to be short of minis, codexes, Black Library books, or indeed anything that GW make.

Right guys im gonna shoot down the dream plane....

Your painting is judged vigorously when you join a job like this you need to be a constantly exceptional painter any lowering in standards and your out...

nice salary though but I prefer an hourly wage no screwing around...

But subsidised cafe' Canteen A FREAKING PUB on site those perks are good plus all the Books Codexes and Mini's and chance to appear in White Dwarf.....

But alas being an ambitious son of a bitch I need something a bit more "Real life friendly" plus I cant paint for gak im not bad but not Eavy Metal standard.

You wish, according to their rules everything you do for them is going to become their property. Happned to quite some folks I know. Suddenly their prototype they sent in for a job appliance showed up in the regular mini line and they never got mentioned as the sculptors or got payed for it. Oh, and they never got the job they applied for.

You'd almost definitely get sneak peaks- concidering that every model would have to be painted up to be photographed before the codex gets printed, and the printing probably takes place at least a month before release.

I imagine it would get tedious fast. You'd have very little creativity. You'd have to constantly paint models someone else picked for you in colour schemes someone else picked for you using techniques someone else picked for you. And for me at least, doing something for 8 hours a day, even if it's something I love, means I am not going to want to do it when I get home. The final problem with this job is- what exactly does it lead to?

If I was still 21 with no career in mind I might want to try it, but it's got very limited appeal otherwise.

Think you've got me there Navarro. I've just checked and minimum wage is £5.93 per hour. Multiply that by 40 hours a week = £237.40. 52 weeks at that rate would give you an annual salary of £12,334.40. So actually, this job basically is the minimum wage. No wonder the Poles are coming over in droves...

Flashman I was not trying to be a smartass, I had the idea it was around those numbers, but not totally sure, and since you live there you should know... thats why I asked.
Since minimum wage in Portugal is around the 500euros for unqualified persons its a BIG diference!

The problem starts when you have a house, familly and qualified career to attend to.

As for emigration... mate hope you dont mind a hardworking Portuguese snifing your lands to establish himself
