The clip from the original crew is just nasty, very nasty.

It's a great and underrated film. The ship it's self always reminded me of a stripped down Romulan warbird.

... we don't need eyes where we're going ...

that movie ROCKED FREAKING HARD. one of the few movies that actually scared me.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

I was hoping it would be a really scary film ( from many recommendations )

But i lost interest and only turn my head to the screen when i hear someone scream -_-

The only film that has actually left me unnerved in my adult life was the original Japanese version of The Grudge (ju-on (?)), which I watched whilst under the influence in a force something or other storm at about 4 in the morning in an old house by myself in an upstairs room whilst the hatch to the attic rattled angrily from the pressure difference in the attic and the stairwell.

Event horizon is one of my favourite films. Except for near the end, when it starts to get a little silly.

Event Horizon also reminded me of "Sphere" for some reason.

Mostly, on my phone.

I love that movie; it's a really clever take on (essentially) a haunted house - it's also probably the only movie that I ever genuinely found disturbing. I'm a huge fan of HP Lovecraft, and for me it really hit the right note. [pointless geek factoid] The ship's design is based on Notre Dame Cathedral, laid on its side.[/pointless geek factoid]

I believe it was originally written as a Hellraiser movie. I liked a lot about the movie, especially the set design, but like most horror movies it pretty much ends up just another slasher film in the third act.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I liked the first half. Cool idea. The second half was extremely meh for me. It did not hold together well was very formulaic.

Wasn't there a 'Hellraiser in Space' film - like, Hellraiser 4 or something?

I liked Event Horizon - I think it's a lost sci-fi classic. But then, I'm not really into sci-fi, so what the feth do I know?

That exactly. It's a good 1.5 hours of solid creepiness in space, and then suddenly:

"THE SHIP BROUGHT ME BACK!

AND NOW I'M THE HUMAN TORCH! FLAME ON!!!"

Okay, so I added the last two sentences, but you get the idea. Everything was going right in that movie until they went to the cheesy Hollywood formula. It was lame, it didn't fit the movie, and it didn't even make any sense. That segment isn't even that much of the movie, but it drags the whole thing down. Which is a shame.

Basically, Paul Anderson, the reaper of the RE series, took Sphere and decided to ruin that as well. I think this movie is a good movie when compared to most Sci Fi films. Because most Sci Fi films blow. But, the whole steam-punk-goth look of the ship is totally improbable and kind of ruins it for me. Who the feth would design something like that? Let alone Americans.

This movie had SO much potential, as well....

I prefer Sphere and Pandorum.

Sphere was released a year later than Event Horizon. And is about as good as Event Horizon, being based on a slightly silly Michael Crichton novel.

That movie was a surprise to me. My father in law burns movies by the ton, and usually they are crappy b movies. I figured this was one of them and for some reason just decided to watch it. It turned out to be pretty darn good

Solarizzzzzzzz...

Or did you mean the Russian original (I'll go slash my wrists now - it's that depressing).

I've got a copy of the remake on dvd (given to me by a mate who will pay for perpetuity for this crime). I've attempted to watch it several times.
Each time, without fail, zzzzzzz I nod off.

I could have a caffeine drip and be snacking on chocolate coated coffee beans and still fall asleep through this movie.

BOOKS came out thousands of years ago. And Sphere was published in 1988. Silly? You are entitled to your opinion, my friend.

Fair enough, I think they're sufficiently different, and the similarities are sufficiently general that it's unlikely that you could consider Sphere anything more than possible inspiration. Which is increasingly unlikely when you consider the direct connection to Hellraiser.

And yeah, my opinion on Sphere is just my opinion. I don't think it's objectively bad or anything, and plenty of the science fictions ideas in there are quite interesting, my issues are more to do with the plotting and characters.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. I'll agree, Norman is kind of bland, and Harry was a bit one sided. Beth's character in the book is great....then Sharon Stone came and Sharon Stone'd it.

Yeah, that sounds like a pretty reasonable summary. Hmm, a Dakka side point ending in general agreement. How odd.

Oh, and Moon was a good sci-fi movie.

event horizon was great.
i dont quite understand how folks can say the end didnt quite make sense.
the captains greatest fear/regret was letting a previous crew member burn based ona decision he made and the ship knew that and was playing off of that guilt to an extreme level.

on a side note...
can you really survive space decompression like that?
