(side note This is NOT ship on ship, or crew on crew. Do NOT pick one because his ship is faster, or better armed. Its man on man combat folks!)
Captain James T. Kirk!

A legand that spans across galaxies as well as nerd genres. The youngest person to captain a ship in all of StarFleet
history, Desribed as a man that pushes himself as well as his crew to inhuman limits. He is an incredibly talented Captain
able to save his crew and ship from almost certain destruction. Some say Kirk is reckless, but you cant argue with the
fact that his drive, dedication and pure talent as captain as well as combatant, are none to be triffled with!

Captain Malcolm Reynolds

Though Renolds usually seems more practical than intellectual, he occasionally surprises his crew as well as his foes with
cambative/Captaining skills that far surpass his own talents. Known more as a scoundrel then anything, he is able to get himself, crew,
and ship out of a bad situation with ease and a smile. Renolds was a Sargent for the Independents and faught in many brutal battles
against the Alliance. Never one to back down from a fight, and usually not one to take the high road, Malcom Reynolds is the very
stuff of hard assed space captain.

For the first time ever, these combatants will face off in mortal combat! There are no ties here folks, only one man will come out as victor.
So dakka

James T. Kirk did die, so I dunno. Maybe I would go with Reynolds, but then again...

I feel like there was more killing of faceless extras in Firefly (the zombie radiation guys) than in Star Trek.

Both Captains are fairly soft when it comes to named characters.

I'm going with Mal because he's got the charisma and ability to talk in full sentences without stopping every other word. That and he's more pragmatic.

Well, did Mal defeat his alternate universe self, save billions of lives several times over, and some other things of epic scope beyond the bounds of Firefly?

No, but he does have a fetching intro pic.

I don't know much about Kirk, so I'll argue Mal's case - Star Trek fans, please post your side of the argument

At range, it might be tempting to go for Kirk. He's got fancy rayguns, Mal just sticks with his old war pistol. But then again, Mal hates lasers. I think Kirk would just piss him off. You don't want to piss Mal off. He's a pretty good shot, and if the lives of his crew are at stake, he WILL hit that target.

Up close, beating up Mal "ain't so hard" according to one of his shipmates - but he does have an enormous capacity for taking those beatings, often allowing him to survive long enough for the tables to be turned. He's been shot, stabbed, impaled, tortured - he even died once - but so far nothing's stuck. He may have the backing of one of the best trauma surgeons in the 'verse, but a lesser man would surely have died countless times in his shoes.

Mal is a man of honour and mercy, but will also not hesitate to make hard choices in order to survive. And survival is what this man does best. What he may lack in sheer killing power he makes up for in resilience.

I gotta go with Mal.
He isn't hesitant about doing what needs done. He will shoot first if need be. He isn't much for trying to talk his way out of a fight.
Kirk has been beat up on by a stronger foe and lost a few times. He tries to talk when a shot would end the problem. Plus Kirk IS handicapped by the "Prime Directive".... most of the time.

Kirk has also relied heavily on his crew to get him out of some situations that he managed to get himself into.
Mal tends to get his crew out of situations he got them into.

Range weapon
Kirk: Enterprise-multiples of the speed of light. Armed with at least megaton level phasers and torpedoes. Can fight at above the speed of light. Has shields. Has lots of meat shields, er spare crewmen.
Mal: Serenity. Not armed. No spare crewmen. FTL capable?
Verdict: Kirk

Special Weapon:
Kirk: phaser rifle. Can blow up stuff real good.
Mal: chemical slug throwing pistol. Yea that’s it.
Verdict: Kirk

Primary Weapon:
Kirk: Kirk toss.
Mal: Right cross
Verdict: draw.

Best drinker:
Kirk: Romulan ale, gets a headache and ticks off the Klingon Empire.
Mal: Booze, give him booze any kind of booze. May start a bar fight with alliance scum.
Verdict: Mal.

Most epic fight:
Kirk: going mano o mano with giant lizard (Gorn) and kicking his but with bamboo and a diamond.
Mal: Getting butt kicked in bar but using Serenity to threaten opponents, by “adding another crater to this meaningless little rock.”
Verdict: Mal

Super special weapon:
Kirk: deux ex machine often involving ductwork.
Mal: deux ex machine often involving ductwork.

The only thing I could argue on your thought process there, is its man to man(mostly anyways) so bringing in the ships on this would be out. I mean realistically, if the ships were part of the fight, then itd be a no brainer, Kirk would OWN them so fast it wouldnt be worth bringing up

I still personally think Reynolds would come out on top simply because its just his style. The man can be beaten to within an inch of his life and survive. Infact I think its part of his fighting style. He lets them beat him so badly, that they get to cocky and mess up, and THATS when Captain Reynolds gets his kill in. But I had thought hard on who should win, and really it was a REALLY close match for me. I love firefly, but I mean its CAPTAIN KIRK for goodness sake.

Ah but with the exception of the Gorn, Kirk had back-up from his ship and crew.
The fight would be:
Kirk: I didn't come here to fight.
Mal: Funny, I did.
Quickdraw and 'Pow' Kirk goes down. Can't argue with the Quickdraw.
If you include the crews... then you have to factor in River Tam... That is a whole other discussion.

That is really why I pick Reynolds as the victor. As I said, IF you pick crew on crew, the Trekkies would win hands down. I mean, sheer numbers would give them the edge......Infact Im putting that in bold at the top, too many people are looking at this as crew vs crew or ship on ship.

Well, River has a 50% chance of success. She'd either be doing something crazy, or slaughtering the entire crew of the Enterprise. Pretty good odds, really.

Actually...one on one I don't think Kirk has ever lost a fight. It usually takes 3 bad guys to take down The Kirk.

if you're going River Tam then I have to raise you vulcans, who could literally throw her through a wall. plus Scotty would just drink everyone under the table. Even The Kirk cannot equal Scotty's ability to snorf a few hundred gallons of booze. Its a gift he has.

Reynolds. Come on, he had a nerve cluster torn out during the war with the alliance which means that paralysis techniques don't work.

That said, the new Kirk has shown himself to be pretty handy in a fight.
