What would be a good HQ to start Black Templar SM's? It can be from the Vanilla Marines as well.

Master of Sanctity or Chaplain Grimaldus. They don't need to much in the way of wargear either (don't go overboard, it wastes points)

With Cenobytes your 20 man squads can move faster than rhinos if you're reasonably lucky. Also, Fearless all the time is nice, and zealing towards any enemy gives you much more tactical flexibility.

Remember that you have to have an Emperor's Champion above 750 points, and to get the benefit of Vows. Take him, he's awesome. Keep in mind though, he's not the God-Emperor himself, so keep him away from too many big scary MCs.

Marshals/Castellans are sort of useful in a Force Multiplier sense, but I've generally been told to not run them much under 1500; Chaplains give you better bang for your buck.

I'm still new to the game though, so you might want to wait for some of the more grizzled BT veterans.

Welcome to the Crusade brother!

X has it pretty much spot-on.

Definitely get an Emp Champion- a lot of the time, I field him as the sole HQ choice in my army. If you like the model, the new BA Seth model could make a passable EC

(I think that'll be my next project, as I like the look of the Seth model- just need to get a look at the shoulder pads/iconography and see how hard it'll be to alter to BT).

IMHO I think it all depends on the size of the game.

For small games i usually will only take an Emperors Champion because your going to need him anyways for vows.

When it comes to larger games i usually field a Master of Sanctity, Im a big fan of Chaps though.

Are you just new to BT though or are you a new player entirely?

I'm a new player entirely so any advice on what to purchase would be excellent as well haha

Assault terminators. Black Templar assault terminators can get furious charge (+1S and +1I when charging) for 3 pts/model. Combine that with the fact that BT termies with lightning claws reroll failed hits AND fail wounds, as long as you take "Accept the Challenge, No Matter the Odds" as your vow, and you're in for some major ownage. Fortunately, that vow is the only worthwhile, so you lose out on nothing.

Other than that, I can only agree with what the other members have said, get a Chaplain. Oh, and learn to love the Holy Orbs of Antioch, they're the bane of most enemies.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

I agree on the Terminators, although i wouldnt have more than 10 for my whole army.
Heck i personally only have 5 assault termies in my entire army.

Im a fan of Assault Marines personally, so i usually run heavy on them and they never fail to perform.

Just remember that BT are a more assault based army, so be prepared to get up close and personal.

Ill try and work out a good starter BT army and toss it your way if i can find the time. Until then i suggest checking out the Tactica Articles for BT, theres a decent army build on there that should allow you to get used to them.

Honestly, if you're new, I'd hold off on the Assault Terminators. They are super duper awesome, but by no means unkillable. Get some games under your belt before investing in them, or you might be coloured by some bad experiences.

Just my 2 cents though. By all means, get the assault terminators if you want them. They are amazing and I run a less competitive 1500 list specifically to field them in an LRC.

Sorry bro but Champions dont count as an HQ choice it says in his description they dont fill an HQ slot even though hes listed as one.

Piss off Grimaldus- miss your face "See the apparent objectives of the Crusades weren't cadia, but to troll cadia like HA HA WE TOOK THE SYCAMORE PARK WE HAVE WON CREED! Ok everyone back into the eye of Terror."

GW FAQ states that they may be taken as a compulsory HQ choice.

Xca|iber beat me to it-- I almost never field a Chaplain or Castellan under 1500 points.
