Subject: Da Vortex Klaws (1500pts)

Bounding Black Templar Assault Marine

This is a themed 1500pt Ork army, designed for fun playing. The basic idea was a rich Bad Moon Warboss hired out a Deathskull Big Mek to fight for him, partly to improve his fighting force and partly to show off how many teef he has to throw a round. I will be writing a descent amount of fluff on these guys and will post it at a later date.
The warboss joins the mega armour nobz and the three other trukks in an armoured spear head towards the enemy line, whilst the Big Mek joins the shoota boys who in turn stays within 6" of the Killa Kans with his KKF, providing fire support and some anti- tank. The looters find a nice, tall ruined building to hide in and shoot from whilst the grots hang around and make sure they don't get flanked.
I am short on anti- tank, but I not really sure how I could improve this, help and criticisms are warmly welcome.

I don't like the idea of 380pts of S&P units in a 50pt Transport.
Also, split your Loota squad so you can diversify your targets.
I'd take Rokkits on the Kans so you can get Rams on the Trukks.

The advantage here is that the trukk can move faster, and therefore the enemy have less time to shoot it, but also what i didn't make clear was that the other trukks would cover it so that a line of sight couldn't easily be draw on it, so the formation would look something like this:
T T
T M
(T=Trukk, M=Mega Nobz and Warboss)
Claypool wrote:Also, split your Loota squad so you can diversify your targets.
Good idea, but wouldn't there be issues with leadership (couldn't use mob rule).

Yer, like the rokkits on the kans but I think putting rokkits on the trukks would be better to improve what little AT there is.

I think if the enemy gets to your lootas, they're already a lost cause so splitting them shouldn't matter too much.
Rokkits on Trukks are a bad idea because the Trukk should be moving too fast to use them.

OP:
1. Are you fixated on taking meganobs? There's literally nothing that meganobs can do that a diversified nob squad can't do better. I realize you're after fluffiness, and I'll give it to you: It's so FLUFFY!!!. If you want to step up their killiness though, make them Nobs instead. You can find plenty of discussion about diversification, wound allocation etc, or ask here and anyone will be happy to elaborate for you.
2. Trukks are open topped. I see your diagram, I do. Your KFF is going to guarantee you a 4+ cover save, but there's literally nothing you can do with a trukk to make it block LOS to trukks behind it. They're literally a platform with wheels. You can make battlewagons screen trukks because they're taller and bigger, but trukks just can't screen trukks. Also realize that you only have four of them, and they are incredibly easy to explode. Because of the ramshackle rule, 33% of all shots that get through your KFF are going to explode the trukk once you work out the math.
3. 10 Lootas is statistically the WORST number of Lootas that can be taken in a mob. Whip out your calculator and do some math involving ork leadership (7) and 25% casualties based on different numbers of orks in a mob. Cutting to the chase though, Lootas are something that you take 5 or 15; everything in between is simply a mistake. Lootas are only STR7 - if you only have one unit of them and they're your anti-tank, well....you can kind of expect your opponent to make sure that they only get to see front armor. Two units of them not only offer you double the opportunity to shoot at stuff, but also better opportunities to access side armor.
4. Speaking of armor, pretending that 5th edition is not all about mechanized armies is a futile gesture. I understand that you want a fluffy army and for it to be fun, but that doesn't mean that you can't build an army capable of standing up to the most prevalent types of armies out there. You *need* anti-tank. While your warboss was throwing teef around, make sure he hired a deffkopta or two.
5. I wouldn't advise rokkits on the trukks. A bolter can kill a trukk. A bolt pistol can in fact explode a trukk. I think that a bit of playtesting is going to show you that your trukks are going to get incinerated before they make it to enemy vehicles, and as they explode you'll lose 30% of the orks inside, taking them out of fearless status, having to roll pinning (and potentially leadership) and in general suffering. Don't compound a weak list by adding points where they won't help much.
6. I defintely *WOULD* advise rokkits on the killa-kans though. You need any ranged anti-tank you can get.
Honestly, this is the kind of list where I'd ask you to go back to the drawing board and link to you / write you a complex article about ork thematic play and how we're intended to write ork lists based on klan.....but you've labeled yourself as a fluffy player with efforts at a fluffy list.....and while orks can be fluffy, thematic, and still incredibly powerful; that doesn't seem to be your intent, so I'll stick to trying to help you tweak the disaster you have here into something that will put up a desperate fight before getting curb-stomped instead of simply wilting off the table after deployment.

Dashofpepper:
1. Yer, i do like the mega nobz, mainly for the chance to convert normal nobz and make them unique, but then again it's only for the aesthetics and so i could say they were nobz in inefficient heavy armour.
2. I hear you mate, but how many trukks/vehicle do you need!? The point of this list was that it was a little distraction from my tyranid horde, and having to buy/make 4+ tanks, on top of the killa kans, and possibly the battle wagon you suggest, is sounding like a rather big distraction. Are their any fairly effective lists what wouldn't run up such great costs in both time and money to model?
3. Haha, ok, i think i choose that number after reading the dakkadakka tactica on orks, so that might need to my edited . I like the idea of taking two and being more able to get side armour, two squads of 5 are probably best
4. Yer, i knew i was running short on stuff, but I didn't know what to take out, what would you recommendon AT?
5. Yer, i'd agree with you, but i had the points spare, which i couldn't really spend on anything else, and the wouldn't be much use at my gaming club as most the terrain is buildings and there are only a few pieces of area terrain.
6. Yep done, changed it on my list on my PC
Yer, this was more of a list so that i could field my conversions, but i would still like it to be able to hold its own, as theirs no point spending time and money on something that'd just gona loose time and time again. Do you have lists to other Bad Moon style lists that work?
Thanks a lot for all the help everyone, its appreciated.

That's a general 2k list of mine. I travel around the country playing in RTTs and GTs - I've won every event (or at least taken best general) at everything my orks have attended this year around the country except for one GT. Orks are quite powerful.
Alternatively, check out some of the other ork lists getting feedback and critiques on the page here.

For Bad Moons, focus on Kans and Lootas as these are the shootiest elements of the Ork Codex.
Two KFF Meks
Two 15 Loota Mobs
3x30 Shoota Boyz w/ Nob, PK, and Bosspole
9 Kans all w/ Rokkits
That's a very solid list and will fit the Bad Moons fluff well.

I do agree with the deffkopta part that Dash of pepper wrote. perhaps you can take out the grots (10 grots are just an easy kill point :/) and the big meks cybork body ( its an invulnerable 5+ save, while he also gives off a 5+cover save, so...its kind of useless) that lets you have 50 points enough for one rokkit deffkopta, and 5 points left to spare.
Your army is a cool idea btw!

You're not playing the game like I play it...why aren't you playing the game like I play it?! O_O |
