So, circumstances are changing rapidly for me, and it now appears that I may have the chance to work pretty much anywhere in the world.
I quite fancy a spell in the US, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers about where to avoid, where is good etc.

Oddly, that's one that's on the possible cards. Yeah. Not terribly convinced by that one. No offence (no, seriously, no offence intended) to the Texans, but I think I'd just rub them up the wrong way without even meaning to!

Yeah i think SA is just being a bit needlessly Europhobic!
France is a lovely place to live and work, as is Germany and most of Western Europe.
Japan is awesome, i was lucky enough to get 5 trips out there.
USA is ok, but not if you have to commute for hours like all my missus family do in LA. I guess it depends on where you end up.
To me, its all about having as much leisure time off as possible, so just think about where would be best for you depending on your work.
And i have to ask MGS.. Whats wrong with the good old UK? ive lived and worked all over, and im really really happy here in good olde York.

Go to Long Island, NY. It is right across the pond, is located next to New York City and offers most of the amenitites of that major city minus the huge amount of people.
It is one of the closer locations to England in the U.S., barring a good chuck of New England (which as a Brit I would avoid ).
Suggesting Suffolk or Nassau County. Avoid Queens and Brooklyn.

A lot of it depends on what line of work you're in and how you want to live, among other things. As far as politics, they vary here just like anywhere else on earth, and I'm not entirely convinced that left/right politics are the same in the US exactly as they are in Europe. Also, keep in mind that trends are just that, trends. There are people of all sorts of political views everywhere in the US. Politics in the US is unfortunately starting to fall into two camps, which is really irritating to someone like me who has viewpoints that fall into both those camps at different times. I don't think it is very likely that anyone is going to harass you for your political beliefs.
Political trends vary even amongst areas that are supposedly of one political viewpoint. I've lived in Tennessee and Colorado which are both red states, but I got the vibe that TN is more socially conservative while Colorado has a much more libertarian feel to it, IMO.
Texas is a good place apparently for young workers. There is a lot of growth there and I've considered looking there for employment. The cities I've been to in Texas are very cosmopolitan. I think if you were there it would shatter a lot of misconceptions. If you're into outdoors stuff, I understand the northwest is a great place for that ( not wanting to get back to politics, but those tend to be lefty states, but the left aspects seem to me to be primarily environmental issues). The southeastern US, outside of the coast or Atlanta, is very inexpensive to live in, and you can make your money go farther. I don't know much about the midwest. The southeastern US is another great place for being outdoors.

Dok, I'm moving out to the states myself this year (fingers crossed).
Cities are more liberal than rural areas. The Coasts are more liberal than the middle bit.
Those are sweeping statements but overall the best you'll get really.

The Triangle in NC isn't too bad--we're used to you "darn foreigners" here considering that Research Triangle Park is a big spot for companies that bring in foreign clients/investors quite a bit.

Mn. It's moderately liberal and I've heard winters are similar to yours (though colder I'm sure). Lots of job oppurtunities in the Twin Cities and at least a dozen gaming stores within a 30mile radius (at least 8 are GW approved).
Plus you'd be the second person I know to move from GB to Mn (my uncle lived in London for 28 years and finally moved back to Mn, he was getting tired of life over there).

Austin, TX ftw. The least Texan of the bigger cities there and has a bunch of liberals and more importantly, attractive and young women. Also called "Live Music Capital of the World" and a city that prides itself on being weird. Its the TX city where people who don't like the political and overall image of Texas (for whatever reason) live at. TX is also one of the states that doesn't have a state income tax and has relatively affordable housing. Lots of internationals are there too considering its also home to one of the best public universities in the USA.
Also home of http://www.belloflostsouls.net/ and they had a pretty nifty tournament from what I've read.

Before you decide anywhere in the U.S., make sure to know the five digit zip code of the area you are targeting and throw in a search for management level jobs in a job search website: That way you have a good understanding as to what is available and if it fits what you are looking to do.

 Oh, you...
You seem to have your heart set on the US, which is cool, but I would like to make the case for Spain, specifically the Balearic Islands. It's an amazingly vibrant place, very cultured, and it's not too difficult for english-speakers to get a job. It's also quite cheap to live, and the lifestyle is double awesome. The only problem might be that the economy is in danger of going tits up, although that shouldn't affect the islands TOO badly. It's quite a wealthy place, and tourism makes up the lion's share of the economy.

Suspending my 5 day suspension here.
Houston. Its the Pittsburg of the South. Lots of theater and shows but its a working man's town. Lots of parks.
Weather. Mild winters. It snowed twice in a row here last year and a million people nearly died of shock. I jumped in a cab at midday to escape the horrific blizzard (it snowed almost a half inch). It rains a lot although not as much as New Orleans. But if you like GREEN then Houston is the place due to the rainfall. Summers are hot. We have hot (June) Damn Hot (July) and its ing HOT (July 20-August 15) then it gets better.
Food. We like to eat here. There is a strong Mexican influence but also Persian/Arabic (due to ME being a part of our business) and Asian (Chinese and old IndoChina countries). But whatever there is, there's a lot of it.
People. Its a more conservative town and much more entrepenurial than other locations in the US. Unions are viewed as just this side of evil. But we also elected the first lesbian mayor in the South and Ann Richards is still viewed as a saint by many people. People who don't like the oil industry will be skinned at the airport though.
