I play W40K I can't really imagine myself quitting anytime soon. It's one of my first productive hobbies, and I get a lot of joy out of painting little pieces of plastic an showing them to other people.
I don't know. I hear about people quitting, and I just feel sorry for them. If they're quitting,it's obviously not the right hobby for them, and they shouldn't have started in the first place. It's easy to tell if this game (or wargames in general) isn't for you.
Anyway, can you imagine yourselves quitting? Like, what do you think would push you to just completely quit everything?

I can't. I do play music, so that's always been a productive hobby. I love it because it works with my left and right balanced brain. It satisfies my creative and artistic needs, and my competitive challenge side.
My dive into the hobby came from both living in an apartment and becoming a father. I couldn't really play music, and with a little one around...they sleep alot So I would find myself building, painting or reading about the hobby. I still do now, umpteen million armies later ...with another lil buddy on the way
I love it!

I could see quitting 40k. I doubt I'd ever sell all of my painted armies, but it wouldn't be impossible to see myself getting rid of the bulk of my hobby supplies, unpainted stuff, old codices, white dwarfs, etc. and simply keep a few armies to play.
I would have to become a lot busier and have no real opportunity to play for that to happen though.

I think even if I couldn't play anymore I'd stay in it. I'd just focus on honing my painting skills to the point I'd feel confident enough to enter the GD. I sort of get into that mindset when painting my gaming armies and I always wonder why I have an army for 2 years and have like 8 minis painted. I really do need to quit trying for GD quality in rank and file for an army I play with. LOL.

True!
I play lot of wargames so if I get bored with one particular set I pretty much play something else. I have jumped the 40k/ GW ship many times over the years, even going so far as to get rid of painted armies but I usually get lured back.
I also have other interests outside of toy soldiers so I guess that helps keeps things from getting stale enough top want to drop out completely.

What a lovely arrogant statement I'm forty one years old and have been involved in gaming since I was thirteen, so it was obviously the hobby for me for a long time. Strangely enough other things came along that I became more interested in.
Although I would recommend the hobby to anybody, I find myself looking back at it and shaking my head. As a casual gamer I could never get my head around the gamers who would spend hundreds on models, but never get around to painting, let alone using them. Having to buy the latest releases or systems, just because they are there. How on earth can you get pleasure from having tons of unopened boxes all over the place? Or hiding the stuff from the wife?

I like to think I'm at a stage in my life where I will never quit a hobby- I'll only quit things I've lost interest in.
Meaning that if I want to quit doing something, that thing has stopped being a hobby of mine long ago. If I enjoy doing something, then there will never be a reason for the forseeable future that I can't putter along with it in some form or another.
I'm going pitifully slow on my beastman army... I may never get them up to 1000 points. But I'm enjoying painting and I'm enjoying what I end up with and maybe the guys at the local GW will even help me set up a small game. If not, no worry. Games haven't been my focus for a while, and if GW price rises and model quality continue to diverge the way they are now then I can just happily switch to painting minis because I like the model, not to complete an army.

That's a pretty naive statement, friend. I can only imagine you're a young'un. People quit for millions of reasons, plenty of which have nothing to do with not enjoying it or it not being the "right" hobby for them. Personally I can go weeks or months without being involved in or even thinking about a certain hobby: wargaming, guitar, reading, writing, video gaming, walking, whatever. Any time something takes up too much time or gets old or gets boring or costs too much money or gets in the way of something else or pisses my wife off or blah blah blah, i'll knock it on the head, maybe for a while, maybe for good. Save your sympathy for people who really need it, I don't think quitting gamers ought to qualify.

I had quit 40K & WFB for a few years when there was no one near me that even had heard of Warhammer. Honestly, I am slowly moving from play to doing to building and painting to relax since I have found that there is so many more hats in the stores that are more interested to playing to win and not to play to have fun.

I've pretty much quit already.
I don'y buy WD anymore. Zero content and now even more expensive.
I rarely see people in my local GW who are over 15 years of age. The ones who are look like they've just left a Limp Bizkit gig circa 1999.
When I do check up on GW every few months to see what's new I'm always dissapointed. Re-packaged plastic kits. More Space Marines. It's boring.
Adding to that, when I reconsider starting again, everything is more expensive that the last time I looked. Don't try and convince me it's due to inflation; that's bullsh!t. It's unforgivable and as far I can see GW is killing itself.

I can see people quitting the GW side of things with good reason.
The Wargaming hobby as a whole though definately not. There are other superior games and mini`s out there that are well worth investing into.
GW don`t own wargaming like they think. Which is good for actual wargamers not for the GW fanboi`s

I can see myself quitting in the not so distant future. I don't enjoy the gaming aspect too much anymore, I don't paint socially, and I have increasingly less free time. The huge cost of GW and hobbying in general, coupled with a lessening enjoyment will eventually cause me to quit. Dakka has been great for keeping my interest going though.
Does this mean the hobby wasn't for me? No. I've been modeling and gaming for nearly twelve years now. I enjoyed it more in the past, but tastes change as time moves on. Take olives for example. Used to hate them, now can't get enough of them.

The price hikes don't make me want to quit the hobby, but they do slow my purchasing down. Honestly, when I have a passion for an army, I usually don't care too much what the cost is. I've also build all my armies from used stuff, which I guess means I'm not as sensitive to retail pricing.
I'm at a point where I have plenty of 40k to paint, two fully painted armies that are pretty good (IG and Marines), and two armies three color painted to at least be playable (eldar and loganwing). I don't need a new army. FoW is the only other game that's really popular around me, and I've got 1500pts of US Armored Rifles already. I have some stuff to start malifaux, a painted empire WFB army, and I'm doing Mantic High Elves for 8th.
I'd never say I'd be done collecting (I need manticores!) but I really don't need to buy anything for a long time. For me, it's all about painting and playing, and I only paint to play (I'd rather paint non-GW stuff for fun). As long as i can play, I'm in the hobby.

I can forsee the time. If my current group of gaming buddies breaks up I'll probably stop. Its happened to other hobbies I've had in the past. For me ultimately once the new shine has worn off a hobby and it has become familiar, all that keeps me coming back is the fun I am having with my mates. If they move on, for me its time to move onto something new.
I've done it in the past with RPG's, Re-enacting, canoeing, and so on. Wargaming is no different.
My regular gaming buddies are all 40+ married homeowners with local jobs, so they aren't likely to move away any time soon, but you never know. If and when they do I'll be up for a change. Probably take up something more active now the kids have grwon up a little and I'm not so tied to the house in the evenings. Maybe cycling or rambling.

I'd like to second this. 16 year vet here. For me, it is more a migration of interest. I'm not entirely quitting, but the reduction in spare time which comes with working full time has forced me to re-evaluate how spare time is spent. I am equal parts gamer and modeller - GW's shift to streamline the rules and their slow release of codex updates has really dampened my gaming enthusiasm, where the death of the bitz service and the increase in prices has raised the price of converting beyond what I am willing to spend - GW seems intent on punishing converters these days considering that using said expensive conversion isn't a given GW's track record in streamlining options.
As a direct result, I am heavily downsizing my collection (6 armies presently - goal: 2 armies, or maybe 1 army and 2-3 stub armies) and have reinvested heavily in their competition ( WM/Hordes: 6 armies).

Do I want to ever quit... no. Can I see myself doing so... yes.
It's an unfortunate and sad cycle that repeats itself over and over. I start a game, enjoy it immensely, but then the game evolves into something that is no longer fun for me so I quit.
MTG - Evolved into something I didn't enjoy and remains as such to this day.
L5R - Evolved into something I didn't enjoy. Also, the reprinting of super rare cards I paid a small fortune to own. I have not revisited this game as its popularity also collapsed with its evolution and repeated change in ownership.
40K - Third Edition changed the game into something I didn't enjoy, but 5th edition brought me back.
There's also the fact that life can take sad and unfortunate turns and force you into quiting. This almost happened to me a few months ago and I'm still riding a hair thin line that could force me out of the hobby. :(
