There's a lot of haters out there but at the end of the day more people love the Space Marines than despise them. And there's a reason for it. All other things being equal, I'd collect at least six Marine armies: Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Raven Guard, White Scars, Salamanders, and Ultramarines. The fact that all six armies could be built out of current dexes with totally different (and very fluffy) flavors is an indication of why Marines do so well. I should also say that at one point or another, I've seriously considered getting into Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, Black Templars, and Dark Angels.

As things stand, I only have the beginnings of a SW army (and some unopened boxes that will one day be Word Bearers, if you really want to know) and that is ONLY because I love my Sisters of Battle so damn much. But how about you guys? How many have you had through the years or currently play? Be sure and list them and maybe even talk about what drew you to them.

Well here's the thing: you wouldn't have six armies - you'd have one army with six colour schemes.

I grant that Marines have a number of styles which are both fluffy and viable on the tabletop, but that don't make them different armies any more than my all-Jetbike Eldar are a different army to my mate's Footdar, or that my Sisters are a different army to yours because mine are gold and yours are another colour.

Anyway - I voted none and never, but I don't hate Marines - they just don't appeal to me. Not my style.

Do what you love, mate.

I guess having a White Scars . . . *ahem* force all on bikes and a Raven Guard force built around infiltrate, &tc, would be different enough to consider different armies as far as I'm concerned. I think you're hooking the word "army" up with Codex, a la WHFB. I meant to convey the sense of a hobby project of collecting, assembling, painting, and playing. In this sense, I could have more than one Sisters army and your army is certainly different from mine.

Currently building a Space Wolves army, but I wouldn't want more than one Marine army. I'd rather collect something else.

moved RG/SA/IH to SM (5).

=> 10 armys. LoD and deathwatch aren't "armies" and the GK are to few to be one.
Still have them all.

Somewhere.

I have 3...Dark Angels (which tend to get used as Vanilla these days) Grey Knights and, somehow, I've ended up with a Blood Angels army pretty much by accident. I also have Chaos Marines.

Blood angels Full Company 3000+ pts

Deathwatch 500 pts

Ended up selling them all.
While I don't "hate" spazz marines I do think they are WAY over used by GW. To the point where You need to build a army list for MEQs.

Currntly have 0 marine armys, but I miss using my Night lords, unfortunately since the Chaos marine codex sucks, I will not be building a force any time soon.

When I get around to it will be modelling my own SW based army.

Probably they will be my only SM's. partly due to the time that the conversions will take, other projects and lack of funds for yet another army.

If ever am in a position to get a 3rd 40K army it will be something other than marines in all likelihood
Possibly Tau.

Also I find the Imperium creepy

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Never had a Marine army and the only one that has even a sliver of a sliver of a sliver of a chance is Grey Knights because of the small army versus the world aspect they MAY have, which would be a fun challenge. I have Chaos, but there is literally a bare number of Marines in it, just some Plague Marines for scoring. The rest is Chaoszilla (dreads, defilers, princes, greater daemon).

On the flip side, currently have/have had Orks (twice), Chaos, Sisters of Battle, and Tyranids. Will be getting Dark Eldar with the rerelease and will consider Necrons or Grey Knights depending on rules and models. A pure Harlequin army would be interesting, but I don't see that happening unless the DE or future Eldar codex allows it. Other than that? Meh. No interest in any Marine chapter nor IG, Eldar, or Tau.

1) 1st minis ever were the RTB01 Beakies and9 a couple of blisters. These ended up getting painted as Blood Angels.

2) WD rear cover had a diorama of Ultras assaaulting Orks with cinematic gun effects and all. I had to repaint my men to emulate Mr McVey's work.

3) Realm of Chaos books launched and the Grey Knights became my army of choice. Back then, they had the same kit as Vanilla SM, including Chaplains, Tac, Devand Assault squads. This was my favorite iteration of the GK.

4) I was on hiatus for a long time. Got back in with Eldar, but eventually made my way back to power armor. World Eaters caught my eye in the 4th(?) edition codex. The codex prior to Lash etc.

5) Currently collecting PH World Eaters. Love the color scheme and I love Codex BA. My intention is to get these guys up to a point where they can fill in the slots for most of the current SM/CSM books and be WYSIWYG.
That'll be about 4 armies in and of itself.

I voted more than five... but its actually five, you don't have an option for just five LOL.

I started with a DIY.(3rd)
then, Space Wolves (3rd edition)
White Scars (4th/Chapter Approved)
Ultramarines (5th and current)
I have a *small* force of Grey Knights.

I will call them separate armies, even though they all were space marine, simply because of rule(s) changes, over the course of editions and codex's etc.

Well, I have about 5000 points of the same chapter... though its from 3 different companies. I said 1 army, but I think its more like 3.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

yeah i took this to be "chapters" as armies... since I have a full company of ultramarines i could break it up into two or three armies, and have legal playable armies.... but i would never all it three armies. Granted the fully company is a couple k points smaller than your army.

Hmmm, I've started and then sold a few armies, thinking about it.

In 1990ish I had my Traitor Thousand Sons force using marine rules.

Then in about 92 I had my made up Fire Wolves, they looked poor.

94/95 I went to Dark Angels and Space Wolves, like the idea of the rivalry.

99-02 I had a huge Scythes of the Emperor force, with three Land Raiders.

03 I went back to Dark Angels

05 I started on Space Wolves a second time.

09 I began a small Ravenwing force, which may yet spiral into a larger Marine army.

10 Been considering Scythes again, but so far held my nerve.

So eight Marine forces in my time.

I used to play Ultramarines, then Dark Angels. I moved on from there to Space Wolves, and found a horde of old models that became Crimson Fists. I read Storm of Iron and was inspired to start a Chaos army, so I have some Iron Warriors half completed. I almost started Flesh Tearers, then used my better judgment to not make the army.
