Well soon to be 3 if you count 1k sons. Well i see i need to update my sig: 3500 1k sons, 3000 Grey Knights, and right now an unknown amount of SoB. I like me inquisition and Sorcerers.

Why would Grey Knights count?

Powered armour, (storm) bolters, MEq statline.

But they are not exactly an operable unit unless chosen to be so, as they are from the DH codex not the GK codex.

Even more importantly, they are not descended from any of the founding legions (well, not really). If Grey Knights were Space Marines, does that mean Custodes and everyone else with Power Armour count?

True, but fluffwise, Grey Knights go through the same genetic modification Space Marines go through, with some added extras. Sisters and Inquisitors just throw on powered armour, and Custodes are built with an entirely different process.

The process of creating a Custodes isn't that incredibly different. Is it?

Besides, I certainly don't think GK were meant to be included in the spirit of what the OP was saying. If that were true he would have posted MEQ, not Space Marine (which are similar but not identical).

True, that's why I said "If you consider them to be."

They're often compared to Marines, and can be grouped in the same pile with them. They're not marines, and so far, they're not advertised as marines, but they share enough in common to be mentioned with them.

There is a difference between Death Watch and Grey Knights, isn't there? One is requisitioned from existing SM chapters, the other is on an awesomesauce leage of its own.

I see your point, and it may be a matter of contention, but I wouldn't class them as Space Marines. They don't quite fit.

someone mentioned the Dark Angels / Space Wolves feud [Morathi's Darkest Sin, maybe, sorry if I butchered that name...] and that alone got me to collecting both of those armies. Sometimes I can get my brother to put down the SoB long enough for a one-on-one with those.

also, starting up a DIY chapter for absolutely no good reason. So, I voted 3. but, like a few others, I've also got a bunch of Grey Knights, though I've rarely played with them I still love 'em, just, yeah...

Guys if Grey Knights aren't space marines... how come in the CODEX, their title is Grey Knight Space Marines?? I would count them as Space Marines... since that's what their titles says they are. Whether you want to call them an army... is debatable since they are listed as a special formation. But most assuredly they are Space Marines.

I don't think they were what the OP had in mind, that's all.

well they are space marines... and you can have an army of them.... so why not? Just because fluff says this or that, in game terms you can have an army of Grey Knight Space Marines. so i think it should count.
You can't have an army of Deathwatch, only a squad, so that doesn't count.
but this is just my opinion.

Normally I wouldn't count my Space Marines as four (or five...i have Grey Knights) armies, i'd say one. But I had a different chapter in each version of the Game since end of 2nd edition. different rules, different codex's, different armies.
When sixth edition comes out I am sure I will start a new chapter army as well.

Poll Error - It has 4, and then 'More than 5'. What if you have five?

Anyway,

Ultramarines
Black Templars
Death Watch (no matter what Kan says about the concept)
Chaos (really it's a lot of different armies - WE, IW, WB, AL - done in a modular style, but I'll count it as one)
Death Guard (they are separate from the other Chaos Armies)

So 5.

Well I have kind've fallen in love with the Chapter I invented for our Dark Heresy campaign - the Emerald Vipers - and their odd structure:

  • Non-Codex Chapter

  • Divided into many 'Fraternitas' across two home-worlds

  • Very heavy on the 'oath' thing

  • Actually have a good relationship with the Minastorum and follow the Imperial Creed quite closely

  • No... must not do yet another Marine army...

I ring in currently at a very respectable three.

Imperial Fists - the true loyalists.
Raven Guard - the original reasonable Marines prior to the meme that reinvented them.
Space Wolves - Space Vikings, rawr!

Space Wolves were my first SM force, and the call of my Norse heritage paired with more powerfists per capita then is sane really drew me to the army. I loved the idea of high tech beserkers, always have, always will.

I started the Raven Guard because at the time I wanted a very easy army to get up to tabletop standard painting. I chose RG over some other black chapter because I like the concept that the RG aren't so fanatical and are focused on the idea of tactics and trickery over brute force.

The Fists were partly because I was too stupid to understand how hard it is to paint yellow and mostly because to my mind Dorn is easily the most true and loyal of the Emperor's sons and I loved the strict honor concept of the chapter.

Anyway, the light of the Eldar found me and since then space marines have been in a box hidden forever to hide my shame.

Eldar are great as colours and miniatures can be very different. I find the SM too repetitive and they get annoying to paint.

I think GK count as a SM army because they have SM as a troop choice. The best argument against, I think, is that they constitute a DH army rather than a SM one. But all that does is point out problems with the concept of Inquisition codices, which we can debate elsewhere. To wit, this sort of thing:
Luke_Prowler wrote:1 if you count Grey Knights, although I mostly just use Inquisition units.
probably should not count for the sake of this poll, no more than a Guard list that put GK in Valkyries or Chimeras. But a DH list focused on GK counts as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe, though I am less enamored by the Templar then he is - it's pretty established currently that they are a chapter founded on the concept of vengeance. I agree there is indeed a fine line between fervor and Chaos. How do you feel the other forces of the Inquisition fall upon this axis since they too tend to emulate the Templar creed of fanatic devotion to the Emperor, blind hatred of Chaos, and will to fight?

And regardless of that debate, I'll take Dorn and his various successor chapters over the other less reliable children pretty much any day of the week. I'm still assessing how I feel about the magically tacked on First Foundings, but I have a hard time taking them seriously since by dint of how they were created they had to be written out of pretty much every major imperial engagement up until recent history.
