I also dislike ending up in tourneys and apoc games where all I see is a sea of plastic and metal. Basically yopur game doesn't count as the largest apoc game because it was really just a sprue dump and a darth vader masked glued to a square block of plastic. Part of this whole game/hobby is seeing the other opponents army arrayed before you in all its glory and some how seeing a mess of plastic and fugly toy/mask mash-ups just doesn't give me that awe inspiring feel. But to each is own. I don't agree with GW's strict policy of painted only mini's allowed in matches, but I do agree that you should have a mostly painted army with one or two units that are new or being tested as viable in your army being unpainted. No sense wasting time putting effort in a unit you find out is useless and I agree, but otherwise leave the junk at home.

All in all a fairly nice sized Apoc game, although somewhat imbalanced. My local store has been playing one apoc game a month with whomever shows up on that day and so far we have had some really great games ranging from 24k - 60k points in a game. Another way of doing it is to enforce a certain army size for each person to bring to these events. Our store is using a 2k or 4k point limit per person making the games have about 6 people per side during any given game and it seems to work well. Bringing in my new Ultramarines Fighting Eagle(basically a marine fighter jet) next month to add some more variety to the game.

Note: D+ can take over 12 hours of driving in Canada. It's no small task here.

ya ya we'll work on that next time. see thats the thing about this game is it is a hobby, not my first priority in life so when I get a chance I paint. and i understand that 2 fully painted armies battling it out is an awsome sight, i agree with that but when your painting 4 40k armies, and 2 fantasy armies at the same time, it sure takes a while to get one done.

A big ditto here. It's one of the things I love about my Gaming Club - run by some guys who are really into their wargames and have made some beautiful scenery. The games I get the most from are the ones in which I play other fully painted armies. Metal and plastic just don't push my buttons. Some might say they have no time to paint because they have twelfty-six armies on the go, but to them I say: Focus. You're spending a lot of money on finely sculpted miniatures that are crying out for a lick of paint. I just don't see the point in investing money in minis if you aren't also going to invest time and effort into building a force to be proud of.

It doesn't have to be golden demon standard. The aforementioned GC guy built a 1500pt Tyranid army for the use of new players at the club. I think he used about 4 colours and only did very basic detailing, but the unified basing and colour scheme looked fantastic and evocative on the table, and for me that's what it's all about. If it was JUST about winning a strategy game, I'd play Risk.

But, as has been said, to each their own.

*Edit*

For the hell of it, the fun of capturing painted minis + full terrain with a slightly blurry camera. The red board looks a bit too vivid here, but it's awesome. The club has a bunch of green boards though, ideal for apoc - I haven't had chance to play it yet, which is a shame because there are a few FW titans hanging around.

Some notes here....

1) A baneblade main cannon can't kill more than one landraider unless by some amazing coincidense the landraiders were touching side to side at their sponsons and the center of the template scattered to where it was actually touching both of them, otherwise one would be hit by a half-strength shot.

2) You can't "opt" to hold your reserves until turn 3, the imperial side cheated. Half show up turn 2, half turn 3 unltss using Careful Planning.

Didn't the evil side have any help from assets? That sounds like it was just a stomping.

It is interesting that you had the same experience with Brass Scorpions that our last Apoc game had, being that they kill more things when they die than when they attack. It seems the only thing you can really do with them is deploy them by themselves and FAR away from your own troops since when they die, and with only a few Structure Points they will, they take pretty much everything around them with them. Great fun though

Looks like it was a great time though, silly models and unpainted things aside. As much as I love a fully painted army, for Apoc I don't care what the things look like as long as the person stays the entire game. Chances are really good it will be dead in a little bit anyway

Hang on, are you saying the Necrons were on the good side? How does that make sense? (other than we wanted to use them)

sorry, not all of that last post should be in the quote box, i'm not used to quoting things yet. The last sentence should be out of the box

its ok about the quote box. and the reason the necrons were on the good side is because of how completely un balanced the points were when we first started to balance the sides. To balance the points cost we had to remove a 6000 pt tyranids army and move the necrons to the good side.

love big battles, last time i had an apoc battle it was only 30k points, and 10k of them were my nids lol.
annoying thing being i have no titans, just a few trygons and such, so against 2 warhounds that caused serious probs.

2 reaver titans are much worse than a single warlord; pretty much have 1.75* the firepower for the same amount of points, and longevity to match, too. ah well. Brass scorpions are pretty much only good as suicide tanks. put 'em up close and unfriendly with the opponents, and pray that you get the first turn, then march forwards. nice report.

That looked freakin awesome. Our club is very relaxed on painting and stuff. I think a guy once used a Hulk doll for a Gargant once. We struggle for that goal of a fully painted army, but it goes slowly. Eh, the battle looked like fun.

On a side note, I notice what redmond was saying. There were some toy cars and stuff on the table, looking supiciously like proxies. That may have been what he was talking about.
