This could bring in some fun gaming idea for 40k. I am trying, with a little success to bring in Ancient Battles rule in to Fantasy, the ones that make sense like massed arrow fire. It should be interesting to see how they make it different from 40k.

I think WHAB must be given some credit for the increasing popularity of Ancients wargaming in the past few years.

Whether players start with WHAB and move on to other systems, or stick with WHAB, either way it brings in new players and stimulates the production of figures.

This proposed WW1 rulebook may do the same for WW1 and moderns generally.

I wonder if Pete Jackson's custom ANZAC figures done by the Perry brothers will get a commercial release? I think they are 54mm but perhaps the scale could be adjusted.

Pretty impressive. I think my favorite it the soldier helping his wounded companion on the donkey.

Some more info coming from The Warhammer Historical Wargames Blog. Sounds like there will be much more fluid games than we were thinking.

Warhammer 40k, Second Edition.

Sadly, no changes to the rules system are needed to simulate trench warfare. :(

Not exactly but anytime you play the Americans against a European army they win automatically. The rule has been tentatively titled..... "Do we really have to go over there again"

3500 pts Black Legion
3500 pts Iron Warriors
2500 pts World Eaters
1950 pts Emperor's Children
333 pts Daemonhunters

Maybe because a lot of GW tanks are based off of WWI tanks?

Also, as someone else already said, some WWI battles, especially non-western front battles, were very fluid and a bit more decisive than the drawn out trench warfare stalemates that most people associate with WWI.

I am looking forward to this.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how cavalry work.

Being a relatively-realistic game, I wonder if most artillery will remain off-table?

It depends on how much of a sliding scale they decide to use. I would think though, that at least mortars would be available as on-table assets. Anything heavier than that would be pretty questionable at 28mm. At 15mm light howitzers and the like could work with a sliding scale though.

You guys are talking about WWI & WWI wargames. It doesn't seem like any of you have stumbled across Panzer Battles. It was a WWII game made using the Warhammer 40k rules with a few minor changes. A guy named Phil Yates in Australia (I think) made it. He's a big history buff, and has made several WWII games. The best part it...its Free!!

If you are interested, Google Panzer Battles, and look around a little bit. I know its still there in one form or another. I check into it again about 2 months ago. All the army lists are there and they are quite detailed.

Good gaming.

Phil Yates is one of the primary developers for Flames of War, based in New Zealand. Warhammer Panzer Battles was the game he was working on before that. When GW decided not to pick it up, he helped create Flames of War.

Hordini,

Thanks very much for filling in the missing information. I figured I had part wrong (as I mentioned). I also didn't know he had worked on Flames of War, but that totally makes sense to me. I hope some of these other people google the rules and download them. They are right up the alley for what they are taking about. It seems like you are quite aware of the rules, the man, and the story. What do you think of Panzer Battles?

I downloaded WPzB many years ago, and was OK with it. FoW is the more-refined version.

There were some great 40K IG ANZAC conversions that had been submitted for Golden Daemons that I saw a few years ago, including Rough Riders with slouch hats - does anyone still have pics or links to those lying around?

Stonefoxx,

No problem man. I actually haven't played Warhammer Panzer Battles. I am an active FOW player though, and that's how I know about Phil's involvement. I've heard good things about the system, but I've also heard that FOW is the better, more refined version. But as far as personal play experience of WPB goes, I don't have any.

I do recommend checking out Flames of War though, if you haven't yet.

Yeah, I checked out Flames of War. It's a good system, and quite different than 40k. I understand that there is a revised (2nd edition) set of rules that I haven't seen. The original posters of the thread wanted a WWI or WWII system using the 40k rules. I was trying to point out for them, that its already available and that its Free! I figure they (like me to some extent) are leary of trying a totally new (unfamiliar) system like Flames of War, and wanted to use familiar rules in the appropriate setting. Panzer Battles fits that bill. Plus they can use the wonderful Flames of War minatures if they want to give it a try (they really do look nice).

It's all good, bro.

There is indeed a 2nd edition of Flames of War. There are a lot of minor changes (all for the better, in my opinion) but the system is basically the same.

A bit of encouragement though - while Flames of War is a system that is significantly different than 40k, many of the concepts are similar and it is also based on a D6 system, so people who are used to 40k should be able to pick up the Flames of War system very easily. This was the case with me anyway, and I've heard a lot of other 40k/FOW players say the same thing.

That said, despite the similar roots, it is definitely not the same system, and the beauty of it is really in the subtle differences that make for a very tactically rich gameplay experience.

Would it have to be in 28mm scale.

If I were designing a WWI game (trench warfare) it would be at FOW or smaller scale- whole regiments attacking and entire platoons dying to a single machine gun.

I just can't see anything approaching fun at 28mm scale when your company advances against entrenched machine guns and dies...
