There's a guy locally (Whitedragon knows him I think) who plays at the GW store.
His army is pink... not "Emperor's Children" pink. No.
I'm talking more like, "Is your armor made out of cotton candy?" pink.

I do know who you are talking about, and it's more disturbing if you know more about the guy...

Also, at Adepticon last year, I played against the Cold Steel Merc's (Mannahin's Team) and one of their players had the Strawberry Shortcake Marines, which made my soul die a little bit inside. Although, I got quite a perplexed look from the gentlemen when I informed him that the template from my basilisk would be placed directly on one of the Butterflies on his predator. I would have thought that you have to already have an attitude that this isn't all that serious if you paint your marines in bright pink, but apparently he didn't think it was funny that I was individually targetting butterflies.

In other words, animals from a planet that had been one giant city for what, 15 millenia? I have to wonder just how many of those things could possibly be extant by the time the chapters were named.
I mean, ok lions, dragons, those sorts of things are pretty engrained into the human story. But where are the scary, non-terrestrial critters? Catachan Devils.... and what? Where are the Astral Jugonu'Pa or something.

Given the time frame, I'd always thought that the Rainbow Warriors were a reference to this.

Real swell guy, that Kharn.
(big version here)

I once ran into one chapter called The Cutting Swords. Not outright bad, but really kind of The B&C name generator once gave me a chapter called the Thunder Hippos.

My own marines are called the Ouroboros Razors, while my SoB belong to the Order of the Ouroboros Ascendant (what can I say, I like infinity).

I do think Angel is a very overused word with space marines. Though I still like the Dark Angels :p But I didn't really like allot of the GW names so I made up my own.

I always thought "The World Eaters" was a nice name for a Space Marine Chapter. Same with the "The Blood Drinkers", "The Flesh Tearers", and "The Rampagers". "The Thunder Hippos" isn't so bad when you think about it: hippotamus' are incredibly dangerous and violent animals.

Also, that "Angry Marines vs Kharn" picture is awesome.

I went for the "Kriegmarines" because of my fluff combined with it's historical basis. I left the 's' off Kriegs to distance them a little from the actually WWII navy of Germany, but it fits. Being one word it escapes the track of the "X of Y" marine names, but is still in a similar vein.

Brokeback, in reference to the brokeback mountain movie. all this tom foolery should not be taken serious in any way, it is intended to insult a movie.

Not too local actually. Quite widely used, actually. It WAS a movie about 2 gay cowboys after all. And really, what's it going to be remembered for in 30 years? That it was about 2 guys and their experiences as cowboys in the 60's? Or that it was about 2 gay guys?

Seriously.

Given that "Brokeback Mountain" isn't unique in involving two gay protagonists (even two gay protagonists that are cowboys), one would hope that it was remembered for its beautiful photography, meticulous composition, and story about the effects of the closet on the protagonists and their families.

I get why people that haven't seen the movie think it's about two gay dudes, rather than emotional intimacy or lack thereof, but I don't get why some people are stupid enough to confuse it for "Black Daddies on White Twinks Ass-Banging Rodeo IV".

It'll be remembered for being the movie made by the guy who directed both
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon AND the Hulk.

Natch.

It's a good film.

No one wants to be remembered as the guy who made The Hulk. Well, until we see the next Hulk movie(hopefully).

Crouching Tigers: They're Grrrreat!

Anyways, Rainbow Warriors were from RT, and from what I've heard their insipiration was actually the Greenpeace ship "Rainbow Warrior" which was sunk by French intelligence agents for it's role in protesting Nuclear Weapons testing in the Pacific. Background wise I don't believe they actually went to Chaos, but they've not often seen eye to eye with the Administratum and have had numerous run-ins with the inquisition. (The main RT era picture of them was of one being toasted by a Sororitas with a flamer) The Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior was actually inspired by a mythological Native American warrior, and the Original Rainbow Warriors chapter also had numerous Native American elements to them, I believe.

For the other names on the OP's list, they're all good names, with powerful or frightful animals (lions, Sharks, and snakes) linked to words indicating either strength or honour (Celestial, Iron), or indicative of what they do (Space, as the Space Sharks, background wise specialize in Naval Boarding actions) The Black Wings aren't a great name, but for an orbital insertion strike force in invokes the appropriate mental imagery in the reader.

Alot of the names don't sound terribly terrifying or anything when your first hear them, but they make alot more sense when you look into the background of the chapter. (when such background exists) For example: The White Scars. Doesn't sound that impressive, or really make that much sense, until you go back into the background and find that the warriors of the white scars artually ritually scar their faces to celebrate major victories or campaigns, as their forfathers on Mundus Planus/Chogori have done for millenia.

My DiY chapter is the Imperial Hammers, being successors to the Salamanders and following in their legacy of craftsmen and artisans.
