You call it variances, Marneus Calgar calls it DEVIATION.

Someone (preferably s person with programming skill) ought to write a Spam chapter name generator.

So are Blood Angels and Dark Angels, and look how different *they* are...

As 5th Edition moves along, it would appear that variances from the Codex Astartes are going to be smaller and smaller.

Dark Angels and Blood Angels have never been that Deviant from the Codex. Dark Angels basically just have Deathwing and Ravenwing (which have existed since before the Codex did), while Blood Angels just put alot of extra emphasis on Assault Squads. (which makes sense, since their founding primarch could fly)

Truly Deviant chapters are the Space Wolves and the Black Templars. And the White Scars, though they've been ignored and not gotten their own Codex.

On the subject of scary things, I tried to think of the scariest thing possible.

Based on Holy Terra, deep in the bowels of the Imperial Revenue Service, there exists a secret marine Chapter dedicated to rooting out the most insidious threat to the Imperium- corruption! Heretics fear the Inquisition, xenos scum fear the Ultramarines, but everyone fears the Emperor's Auditors... .

Lois McMaster Bujold already did Imperial Auditors. They were just as scary as the Inquisition is in 40K.

In retrospect, I can hardly believe I posted that "serious" comment on fluff in regards to the Codex Astartes.

In reality, I think that anyone who would tell another player to give up a creative army idea because it "goes against the fluff" is not doing anything beneficial or constructive for the gaming community.

The Pan-Fo being the exception, of course.

The first chapter that I got was the "Ice Eagles."

Not as completely horrible as I was expecting.

The second one was the "Storm Swords" though. Isn't that a WARMACHINE unit?

Okay...the third one takes the cake - the "Amethyst Amazons." If anyone is itching to do an all-female chapter, I think this is the name for you.

Fourth one I got was Sapphire Redeemers, which is ok.

Of course the third one I got was the 'Doom Bees'... so results may vary here.

Ok I'll keep going:

Fifth one was Thunder Stalkers. Nice.

Howling Dragons.

Orange Salamangers... what?

Cryptic Dogs! LOL! Ok, that's too funny.

Desolation Brothers - aren't they in the new Chaos Codex?

Grey Guard - led by their Chapter Master John Smith!

Space Brothers - There's one for Kyoto.

Arctic Templars - Cool, but a little too Earth-centric.

Polar Champions - Hmm...

Black Falcons - Too derivative.

Fire Swords - LOL!

Blood Skulls - There we have it folks, about the most derivative name you can get without trying to hard. The only thing that would improve this is if they were the Screaming Blood Skulls.

Ozone Swords - Huh?

White Phantoms - Ok, that is pretty cool.

Screaming Sisters - Another female chapter?

Death Crusaders - More derivative names.

And finally... *click*

Furious Angels - Ah yes, led by Chapter Master Dougan, a chapter that hates women and is obsessed with death, but has great hymns to ride into battle with.

Nope, though it is very close. You're probably thinking of Stormblades which is also a Baneblade variant, IIRC.

I think the Blood Skulls's icon should be a screaming skull on top of crossed forearms pointing with a drop of blood behind it all. The skull should also have a smaller screaming skull on its uvula.

Abadabbadoon probably has a good point about the terraforming w/ Terra veggies and fauna, but at the same time, I doubt many worlds would bother to put snakes on them. The Imperium strikes me as being much less "eco-friendly" than "We need to breath, and grow stuff. Maybe not breath so much."

I suppose the main issue is that outside of Catachan, not many worlds have been really described to the point that Apex predators would be relevant or known. I think there was some sort of giant lion thing named in one of the Eisenhorn books, but that's about all I can think of.

Nonsense. Dark Angels and Blood Angels are 2 of the 4 Deviant Chapters. Deviant Chapters are different than Codex Chapters because Codex Chapters follow the Codex Astartes but Deviant Chapters do not. You can tell which Chapters are Codex Chapters and which ones are Deviant Chapters by walking into a GW store and looking on the shelf - if the Chapter has a codex named after it then it is a Deviant Chapter. If not then it is a Codex Chapter. The end.

Truly Deviant chapters are the Space Wolves and the Black Templars. And the White Scars, though they've been ignored and not gotten their own Codex.

Not anymore. White Scars are now a Codex Chapter that uses bikes slightly more than average. Yay for retroactive continuity!

Except that they're only Deviant Chapters in rules, not in fluff. And the Dark Angels are hardly even deviant in rules. "Hey, look at us, we deploy our Landspeeders in groups of 5, and let our Terminators and Assault Terminators play together!"

Rules and Fluff should not be compared to each other, they'll rarely, if ever, line up perfectly.

And that's the single greatest flaw with 40K. Rules and fluff should be 100% congruent 100% of the time. The more fluffy your list is, the more powerful it should get. Historically this has been a problem for GW, as an army like Iron Warriors did exactly that, and everyone complained.

But that'll never happen. GW exists to sell their shiny new model kits, so shiny new model kits get great new rules (Lootas anyone?), while old ones get nothing. If everything was equally useful and fluffy then they couldn't push the new version of the model, as everyone would own it already.

My favorite from the Generator was: "Polar Hornets." Sounds like they should join with the "Doom Bees" for some Apoc ass-kicking!

As far as GW official chapters, does anyone remember the Marines Celebrant? They were uber-lame, too. Notice they have fallen FAR out the the game now.

EDIT- haha... the filter changed "uber-oppositeofhetero" to "uber-lame."
EDIT 2- Just got "Cryptic Turtles." Thought that was pretty funny, too.

Ultra Foxes (Perhaps an SoB order?)
Star Turtles (Need a rule to be very Terminator-based)
Penitent Guard (Actually, not a bad one, if not for the fact that 'Guard' would make people think it's IG. Still tweak to Penitent Sentinels and you could have a good Chapter that feels Angst about something.)
Desolation Salamanders (I think this was an 80s hair band album...)
Blue Acolytes (Led, of course, by th Blue Man Group)

Back in The Day I amused myself on the GW boards by helping the wee ones posting custom chapters make them make more sense. I guess it was a mild form of trolling, but it was definitely fun and most actually received my comments well. I tried to take a silly idea and make it fit my personal interpretation of the setting as well as remove some of the most annoying fluff violations.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Atomic Bringers, FTW! That's hilariously bad...

I would actually use a name like Star Turtles, just because it sounds so cheesy. And I like turtles.

Maybe Space Turtles? How about Solar Turtles, Galactic Turtles, Universal Turtles, Atomic Turtles, Nuclear Turtles, Celestial Turtles, Astral Turtles, Turtle Claws?

Turtle Wolves. Turtle Angels. Turtlemarines. Ultraturtles. Turtle Guard. Turtle Legion. Raven Turtles. Sun Turtles. Turtle Shells. Water Turtles. Green Turtles. Shock Turtles. Strike Turtles. Flying Turtles. Lightning Turtles. Fast Turtles! Oh, so many choices...

No, no. I got it! Thousand Turtles! Turtle Sons. Oh man, I could go on and on.
