A biker nob army is going to run into problems in fifth because it has no scoring units unfortunately!
It's a cool idea though. A little bit of jiggery pokery can get you a pretty low model count ork army though.
Nobs can be taken as troops, and with meganobs in elites getting a bit of a boost with the changes to PKs and slow and purposeful, I could see a Nob army built around trukk or wagon mounted mobs working okay.
You could paint up a mob or two of ard boys and normal boys too, and it would still be relatively low model count, fairly unique and have tonnes of potential for conversions without being sucky on the competative front.
A unit of 10 meganobs with grotsnik giving them feel no pain sitting on an objective would be hard enough to shift I imagine. Except for all those pesky earthshakers.

This army will be an army built for playing.

I'm sort of turned off by much of the Imperial side of the spectrum right now. Too much in common with Marines with the weaponry. I want to have to learn things I take for granted knowing over again. Things like weapons and basic stat-lines of my troops etc.

I also played a very shooty SM army. So with my next army I'll be looking to get to grips more often and hit harder when I do so.

Small warband/teams/group games do intrigue me, but I've already put a good chunk of time into one with my Skaven Mordheim warband. I think they'll do for now on that front. In the future though, as other games open up to me as the groups I game with redirect attention to them. But the Skaven were one of the main driving forces behind this endeavor.

I really really appreciate all of the feedback folks are putting out there for me. It's such a huge decision for me because of all the time and effort I'll be pouring into the army once I make a decision.

How does an nob biker army not have scoring units? I thought it was troops as scoring units? Does it have to be boots on the ground troops?

I am going to second my own vote for Daemon legion. The ability to just buy whatever model you think looks cool and modify it to fit is just too nice. They don't even have to be terribly consistant, since daemons are all chaosy. Each squad could look different, or even each member of each squad, so long as it was sort of obvious what they did.

If you don't do it, I might. I only have ~40 kilos of unpainted figures still in the blister; I might as well purchase a few dozen more.

I'm heading to Battleforge Games in Austin tonight. I'll be doing some serious considering of a good number of suggestions while I'm down there. Looking at army books and codex's. Eying models, getting some face to face thoughts from some folks down there as well.

well then if you don't want imperial and don't want tons of shooting then I say definitely go with demons or nids. demons are new so there will be a lot of flavor of the month armies popping up, but the models are great and there's a lot of theme & conversion potential. Nids on the other had are well established and have immense painting and conversion potential, and even if you just build em normally without much converting they'll still look awesome. there's tons of options, you can do swarmy, go with all big bugs, all stealers, or mix it all up and just have fun with it. Not to mention there's already some great FW big bugs too if you ever want to add something special

I think Eldar. Each unit could be a different in color, with some type of theme or the same color for the stones or weapons to tie them together.

I think I've come to the conclusion that I won't ever be able to stick to a single Army for the full 1500-2000 points.

I've been wracking my brain trying to pick out a single large project for myself and I just can't do it. There are too many cool ideas out there, too many cool models, too many opporunities I'd lose out on modeling and painting-wise if I were to pick a single army out of the list I've got here.

What I'm planning to do is do 'combat squads' of an army. By that I mean, fully functional units for an army, one squad at a time. Then move on to whatever else strikes my fancy. This would give me the flexibility I NEED as a modeler and the ability to eventually put together a playable force.

To that end I have definitely been helped a TON by all of the feedback folks have put forth here. I REALLY appreciate all of the opinions and advice. I never expected all of the replies I've gotten from you all when I started this thread. I figured it would wither and die out of the gate.

Right now I'm thinking a squad of striking scorpions in a falcon are in my future...Expect to see something in my Random WIP thread within the next month or so. Probably right after I finish my Dakka Painting Challenge entry...

After i get my chaos marines out of the way, I'm planning to do the same thing. Going to be shooting for 500 pt armies for some other ideas I have .. like a FW renegade guard army using em as stormtroopers and a nurgle demon army that I can use for fantasy and 40k. And then if I wanna, i can combine it all into a big army for apocalypse.

In Hell, and it's HOT!!!!

Yeah, i think the Eldar is goning to be a good pick i believe. Sneaky, Quick, and has many different abilities. Im getting off topic and you already know that, lol, and yes, from what ive seen on google (no real army yet, a just want everyone to know that), they've seemed pretty awesome looking. So hat's off to your 'would be' Eldar army. Course its not confirmed yet....

BAH! Listen not to the cowardly southerner who hides behind the white swan! Take up arms for the Empress and fight for Khador!

Ahem. If you want small and characterful armies, look at Warmachine and Hordes. Seriously. 500 points can be less than 20 models easily and is full of character.

otherwise, look into Legends of the Old West/High Seas--Cowboy posses or Pirate crews, your choice.

And if you've got yer heart set on 40k: KILLTEAMS! Do an Eldar killteam, an IG Killteam, an ork killteam! Even if you get up to 500 points worth of Combat Patrol goodness, that's still a small, characterful model count and a whole lotta fun.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Like the idea of working on multiple armies and building them up 'escalation league' style. I have SAST syndrome too, can't just work on one big project, need to change things up a bit. So I have the 40K bug again (hopefully my book shows up tomorrow) and have broken down the projects (Nurgle CSM, Nurgle DoC, SM and IG) into escalation league blocks (550, 1100, 1500, 1850).

Well dude, as a fellow Austin gamer, I personally would love to see a Nob Biker list get your special touch. Even a small list would be a lot of fun to put together and play.

And while there aren't that many low-point tournaments in town here, you'll have no trouble finding any number of eager opponents for smaller games list. Food for thought.

How about mech IG? A friend of mine uses the Grenadiers doctorine to make a pure Kasrkin army. He has his hq, 3 troops of kasrkins, and 1 elite + 2 LR Demolishers and 1 LRBT. 45 troops, 8 Tanks. No power armor, and for a 1750 list a lower number of models.

Works well from what I've seen him do with it.

Edit: I missed Crimson Turkey said , but I do support it

Orkses is never beated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die so it don't count as beat. If we runs for it we don't die neither, so we can always come back for anuvver go, see!

grotsnik has to charge the nearest enemy, he is REALY easy to lead away from the objective.
