It's back! This is your chance to show the rest of Dakka what you're made of!

The Rules:

1.) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge presented.
2.) Take a WIP shot of your model before painting. Send your WIP along with your entry.
3.) Paint your model!
4.) Take another shot of the completed model and send it in to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before Midnight Central (GMT-6:00) the night of the Deadline!!
5.) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorite from the bunch.
6.) Voting will last for 4 Days. At the end of the voting, the one with the most votes in the poll, Wins!!

Notes:
The model you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. This does not claiming publishing rights. Once the voting is over, feel free to post your model all over the web ^_^!

Please only send one WIP shot with your entry. If you decide to send more than one final painted shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.

Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Team Dakka" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't win prizes. But don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough a reward...

Images:

Pics of your model may be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels . The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them.

The Prize:
The Winner Recieves: Dakka Bragging rights, A Dakka front page announcement of your glorious victory, the respect from your fellow modelers, and their choice of either a 12 set of the hot new Dakka Dice, or a piece of custom artwork done by GoatboyBBMA.

The Challenge
Old School

Have an old model from back in the day? A model from a project that you never finished way back when? A collectors edition model from days long past that you never had the gumption to paint up? Well it's time to break that bad boy out and get to it! The Challenge is to find an old model from your collection, or just go out and get an old model that's been gathering up dust on the shelves of your FLGS, and do it justice and finally give it the paint job it deserved all those years ago when it was released!

The Deadline: July 31st, 2008: Midnight Central Time (GMT-6:00)

Challenge Rules:

Model must be a Single model.

Based on a single square, round, or hex base. 40mm or smaller accepted.

If you have ANY questions regarding the competition, please feel free to ask here or email DakkaPaintingChallenge@dakkadakka.com!!

For those of you who might be new to Dakka and haven't seen this before, check out The Dakka Painting Challenge Article.

Happy Painting!

Bases can be 40mm or smaller. This will help cater to the smaller scale mini builders out there!

Also adding in the Hex rule. Bases can now be round, square, or hex shaped!

I'm in. I'm off back to Yorkshire this week, so I'll have a rumage in my old bitz box up there for something suitably striking. Game on!

I plan on painting up an entry. I have lots of old school figures. BTW, what defines "old school"?

I'm not certain what you mean here. If it's something along the lines of a Reaper model that comes pre-attached to a base they're molded to, as long as it's smaller than 40mm, it's acceptable!

If it's a free standing model, as long as it's model footprint is smaller than 40mm (could fit on a base of this size) it's acceptable, but bases are preferred as they're easier to determine the size of the model.

Whatever you think.

Remember, everyone gets to vote based on whatever their criteria of what "old school" means crossed with how cool the model is crossed with how well its painted.

We've provided the base guidelines of what is acceptable but what actually wins depends on how everyone ends up voting.

Just pick your favorite/oldest unpainted mini in your collection and you can't go too wrong.

I don't think you need to sit out just because you don't have an ancient miniature. I think nearly everyone has some wierd old model sitting around that you've never had a good 'game' reason to paint up. This is the perfect opportunity to give that model some love.

I just ran into a problem. After reading the rules a bit more closely, i just notice it said to get a pic of my model un-painted, and, er, i had already done it... Is it ok even though i have already painted it? i bet it will be but cant be too careful

Sorry, that's the one rule we're kind of strict on. The whole point of the Dakka painting challenge is to get you to paint something, not to display a model you've painted in the past.

Why not paint something else up for the challenge?

I do have some older models I could paint up, however they are all spray primed white. Can I count this as an "unpainted" miniature from which to start from?

I was going through the Stuff of Legends website to establish just how old some of my OOP stuff is - as OOP tends to equate to old - and I was disturbed to find that GW stuff from as old as 1991 is still in the current range. All the Phoenix Lords and the Warp Spiders date from then. Even older still are some of the Eldar warlock sculpts. Some of those are from 1991. I'm sure all the SM special characters are of comparable vintage.

I was really surprised to find that these "classics" were from the same era as my Imperial Assassin (just a few years shy of the venerable Rogue Trader era)! That makes my 2nd edition hive tyrant just a youngblood.

War Pigg, you could always just strip the bugger and start anew. Most likely your painting skills have improved, and taking a "Before" painted pic to compare to the "After" painted pic will be quite inspiring for you!

Out of curiosity, does it have to be a GW figure? I have some really old GW stuff, but I have a large stash of Ral Partha 25mm that are probably about as old as the majority of the board.

Some quick answers:

Primed counts as unpainted. Just be sure to get your WIP picture before you start painting!

Non-GW figures are more than welcome in the challenges, hence the basing rules being so open.

for those with no 'ancient' minis;

how about an 'old skool' paint job(rogue trader era colours), or an old skool theme (chaos dwarfs, squats)....

I'm looking at a few options.

One is dated back at the release of the Two Towers. I do believe this to be old school, as I think that's about what 7 years ago? if not more I think, could be less though lol.

Not saying what it is yet, but it should be fun to paint

The old Carnifex (Screamer Killer) was mounted on a 40mm square base. Actually, just about anything big in the olden days had a 40mm square base.
