I'm so glad to hear that I wasn't the only one burned by that edition of Ultima.

The only thing I'm glad that I got out of that boxed set was all of the earlier games!

I play

I will magnetize (now doing LED as well) your models for you, send me a DM!

Yah, it isn't just us. Search around on major game sites and I'll wager you find more negative reviews than positive ones. Even Ultima 8 introduced or presaged the game design for the Crusader games, so at least it has that in its favor.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Hmm... I got the junk when Oblivion came out... the store had a spare pre-order copy. That's the only other time I've gotten the 'toys'... Funny that it's Bethesda again.

But I didn't pre-order F3 for the stuff. It'll be cool, but I spent so many hundreds of hours playing hot copies of the first two games that I at least owe the legacy some cash - even if it's not the same company.

Btw, I was eleven or something when Fallout came out. Had no money, and it was probably rated something stupid and restrictive too. I'm sorry Interplay. You can't blame me entirely for your business failure...

I'm working on a great deal of faith here holding out hope for Bethesda pulling this off. Given my postive experience with oblivion I'm pretty sure it will at least be a visually stunning ( Lets hope I can run it, because I can't afford to upgrade) and fun experience. The question remains, and I'll only know when I play it, is it Fallout? Looking at screenies and videos I was saying yes, but after reading some reviews I'm a little more worried.
First off, to some extent the Fallout grognards are just going to have to relax as far as Bethesda making a third person RPG are concerned. The fact is that you're not going to be able to make a 2-D isometric, turn based, RPG in today's gaming market. You sure aren't going to dump millions of dollars into such a game's development. Now, contrary to what you may believe, there are fine 2-D turn based RPGs being made, but that is the territory of the indie game developer now. I *do* think that VATS is both innovative and an elegant solution for combining the action/immersion of the 3D environment with the strategy and depth of a good turn based RPG.

What worries me has nothing to do with gameplay. It has everything to do with presentation and theme. We know Fallout should be a mature game. Bethesda has made it abundantly clear that it will be. In fact, I hope they don't try to overemphasize it and render it, ironically, puerile. In other words, we definitely don't want to fall into the trap of Interplay with the console Fallout:Brotherhood of Steel, also known as Fallout:BoS or, among the community, as Fallout-PoS. I'll put it simply. I understand this game has powerfists. If I buy this game, the first anatomically improbabe woman strolling through the dangerous wasteland wearing a thong and pasties and armed with a whip will have my RL "powerfist" sailing through my monitor. I doubt anything as blunt as something like that will be in the game, but a have seen a couple things that could be overwrought.

A much more minor concern that I saw in the video was that there are elements in the game's visuals that some would construe as "steampunk". Fallout is retrotech, not "steampunk". The world should have no component in it that looks like it came out of Jules Verne's opium pipe dream. Another is that the Super Mutants bear some resemblance to Elder Scrolls orcs. This is actually a bigger problem. They look nothing like the heavy jawed solid build Super Mutants of the Fallout series. This is been mentioned enough that Bethesda has actually said they have an ingame explanation for it. What the Super Mutants are doing out east in the first place is something that needs explaining....Bethesda says they have an explanation that is "simple" enough that they're "suprised someone hasn't mentioned it yet". Lets hope that by "simple" they don't mean slowed.

That's why I'm just getting the 360 version.
Don't have to fiddle with my PC.
Don't have to worry about a wasted game if I didn't like it.

But given how much I still play Mass Effect and Oblivion, I think it'll earn a space on my Shelf of Awesome.

And wow at the pictures of the Brotherhood of Steel minigun equipped folk

I seriously doubt I'll dislike it. I'm just concerned about canon. The used book store where I live buys PC games, so it isn't a total loss even if it is attrocious.

Yes, contrary to what some reviewers said, the minigun wielders look very much BoS.

I have to admit:

I haven't played Fallout 1/2/Tactics.
I wasn't old enough to get them when they were out.

But just the look of the minigunner sold me on it, oh...and the G4 preview where the designer was showing off VATS and then promptly got eaten by some gigantic crab monster.

That was just ace.

Yup! Banned due to drug use. We had another game banned because the objective was to grafitti walls, and sports game where people in your team could take steroids. They made 'em change GTA4 to keep a fixed camera during the sex scenes (ie. so you can see the car, and that's it).

But blood, guts and violence? That's cool! Plenty more of that.

Guess we'll just get it from a different country. Good thing the Aussie dollar is so good against the US one. I can probably get it for a cheaper price than it would have been here.

Actually the opposite has occured. in order to cut production costs Bethesda has made one size fit all, and all meaning the Oz government guidelines.

Hence no 'real' drug use. You still use drugs but the animations were cut and names were changed. Way to go Oz! :S You can have a game when you can use flamethrowers and chainsaws on people, but drug use, no that sets a bad example.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I'm suddenly reminded of the 'Where the Bloody Hell Are You?' tourist campaign Australia ran.

The UK didn't like it because of the word 'Bloody'.
The Yanks didn't like it because of the word 'Hell'.

I guess if it had been "Where the bloody hell drug are you?" we wouldn't've liked it either.

And it wouldn't have been as catchy. Or made any sense. And now I'm rambling.

And now I'm reminded of the Season premiere of Californication Season 2, where we have lots of people taking drugs, random offers of sex, sex with strangers, underage drinking, violence... but the main character has to quit smoking! ROFL!
