I have heard the UK does have a problem with overconsumption of alcohol amongst the youth. But I'm not convinced that means the drinking age in the UK is too low. From my experience, and I know this is anecdotal, there are always people who are going to have a problem with alcohol, and in addition, I believe the definition of "having a problem with alcohol" varies from place to place. For instance, I had a girlfriend once whose mother would finish off a fifth of 150 proof rum every week, and her boyfriend a 24 case of beer, but they never missed work or other things. A lot of people would call her an alcoholic based solely on her consumption, but I can't really see what the issue is. Are people like that going to face health problems? Its possible, but everyone probably has lifestyle choices that are deletrious. She always seemed like a fine person to me.

The US has problems with underage or problem drinking as well, and our drinking age is 21, pretty much across the board ( however, because of Americans obsession with religious freedom, communion wine is excepted, and some states have a 21 law on the books but in practice are likely to overlook consumption by young adults under 21, for instance, Louisiana). I think a lot of it has to do with the drinking culture, rather than what age you can drink at.

I think a lot of alcohol laws are relative, in fact. For instance, I understand that prohibition is widely successful in middle eastern countires ( please correct me if I'm wrong on this one) because consumption of alcohol is frowned upon by the majority of the population. In the US it was utter failure, because the majority of the population enjoys a drink now and then.

This is interesting because in Tennessee we are known as a whiskey producing state, but there are quite a few dry counties here, as alcohol is frowned upon by many around here. In fact, Jack Daniels whiskey is produced in a dry county. Oddly enough, they can sell whiskey in "collector's bottles" to people who tour their factory, but they can't sell regular bottles of black label anywhere in the county.

Britain has a problem with youth drinking because of attitude not legal age. France has a lower age and far less alcohol related violence, for example. A great deal of British people like to get very pissed and have a fight, they'll do that regardless of laws. Most Brits like to have a few pints down the local and a laugh though, who doesn't?

However since they are fairly old, they have (in theory at least) the knowledge to keep themselves in check when blitzed. Setting drinking ages at 16-18 gives you 20 year old alcoholics.

Sure it does. I know i started drinking at 15 and now im 29..........nope not a alchy. Although tonight after work i needed something harsh

My sister got married on saturday, so we had quite a session.
Something like 13 guinness.
I'll be relaxing and not drinking for a while.

I think it's interesting the difference between drink culture here and in the UK. I'd say the brits actually drink more than the irish, and faster. We tend to start earlier, and keep drinking longer and at a steadier pace. And we certainly have a severe problem with alchoholism in this country too. But from what I've seen of britain, a lot of the younger crowd were just downing lots of pints and shots in rapid succession, getting completely hammered and then acting the bollocks. (Obviously, this is not everyone in britain, and some irish do it too, but it was more common over there).
And also, british ladies tend to be more scantily clad. No complaints about that from me.

Drink age restrictions are stupid, it seems countries will no restrictions seems to have less binge drinking problems.

I play!!!!

I don't think it's as simple as "Less restriction = Less binges". It's got to do with a lot of different factors.

London.

Last night I was on a panel judging a ''Pop Idol'' competition in my local town. Hate pop music, love free drinks.
Drumroll...
6 double whiskeys
4 double vodkas with coke
3 pints of Strongbow

and a very debatable choice of winner.

As for the poilitical debate; England is full of morons. Our regular male is too stupid to realise it because he's out vomiting over chickenbone strewn allyways, grasping at the ankles of fourteen year old girls who look like clay figurines, singing the idiotic songs that shake every poxy nightclub to it's foundations, and mopping up his own blood with whatever Fred Perry shirt is fashionable that week.

Someday a storm will wash all this scum off the streets

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

had a few pints of ice cold heineken this afternoon, and then a nice Bullrush cocktail to finish the job.

then had a small snooze before waking up just in time to hear Stevie G. slot in a last minute winner in injury time ! SAF !

this has led to this evenings demolishment of a bottle of Vodka with either red bull or lemonade.

Gotta love bank holiday weekends !

Worked my way through a nice bottle of SE Australian Shiraz.

can't beat a nice drop of red.

And there's nothing wrong with drinking "alone".
