here is my WIP chaos lord conversion. its the first time i have done this kinda thing and im kinda happy with it. its based on an old inquisitor termie figure (you can see i have another set still in the blister so i didnt feel too bad about destroying this one for papa nurgle!) that i went to town on with my little electric hobby drill. i used it to remove all the old insignia, purity seals etc, and then used it to 'weather' the armour. all those lovely straight edges gone.....i wanted it to look old, very old. a lord figure that had suffered from the rotting, rusting, armour erroding atmospheres it would have been exposed too.
as for the weapons, daemon weapon sword and the old psycannon i think can 'count as' a twin linked bolter...a kinda master crafted thing....?
i also really like the pose, the original model leans forward a lot! but by removing the feet, standing it upright and giving him a pot bellie it has the slow, lumbering, soaking up fire look i was after.
the bit left to do is the top of the model. my other termies have the typhus vents as this one will, but i wanted some sort of banner too. either joining the two poles, or off each of them...(kinda japnese style). i havent decided yet, i hope to have it done by the end of today/tomorrow.

so here we have one with paint! its the one i did based on a free beserker i got in a WD some eons ago. i dont like it much so im using it as a test piece. i post it unfinished just to prove i am painting now!
also a pile on the back packs ill paint seperately before putting on the marines.
along with some random pics of all the old models im stripping. some very old (and very cool) metal SM etc.
the four individual chaos marines with heavy weapons.....i did try and think of a way to make them fit in my army but i cant really. so i dont know quite what to do with them. seems a shame to put them back in a box. classics like these need to be loved. painted. and played with.
ah and the soap dish....of all the old plastic beaky marines from my youth....(box sets of 30 marines!...so cheap compared to today) these are the only ones that stripped well enough to re paint. just goes to show. THIN YOUR PAINT! lol

now....do i use these old ones in this army....or with the smurfs....hmm

on a modelling note, i need some advice about the bases.
i want to use the water effects stuff from GW.....or to put it another way i want to make them look slimy. any tips on the best way?
how do you colour the slime for example....should i put some slate, rubble etc on the base first? and paint it before the slime is added?
as you can see.....i have never done it before. but the idea seems very nurgle to me. they bring the slime to every battle field....oh yeah.....unlike those slaanesh wimps....that just bring the noise......(oh god that was bad wasnt it?) sigh.
phill.

ps. again thanks to everyone for helping me out. and of course to the cadavers of this world that inspire so much!

Wood glue and inks, washes, water down paint.

When a chapter approved came out featuring swamps I decided to take 15 minutes and make some. Finish the models have them primered and based, but leave areas in their bases for the glue to rest. Water down the glue just enough so it will settle across the puddle area. Mix the paints in swirling lightly. You should try this out in the plastic blister cases before using it on a model. You can stack the glue over itself. The problem with some of my swamps is that the cardboard pizza boxes (really wasn't taking it seriously) curled up when the glue dried. This won’t happen on the miniature bases.

Here are the results:

Here is another example of wood glue as slime from one of my old models. In this case it is just a thin, water down puddle of wood glue without any coloring. I primered and colored the base before applying the glue. Took all of 2 seconds to put down a puddle of slime using this method. Just leave a recess on the model for the glue to settle.

Whoa. This is quite a project, I can almost hear those poor guardsmen on the rhino begging for mercy as the remorseless chaos marines walk past them.

I say screw TLOS, dont let that stop your imagination.

I like how varied the marines are looking, this will be a truly chaotic army for sure. Awesome job.

thank you for your kind words.
as for the painting, im priming them all white, painting the trim ork hide green foundation paint, weapons are going to be a red/rusty colour and then lots of washes. black and green with some brown. right now im experimenting on the one pictured above (with the purple ork head lol) as i dont like it so much. im using watered down skull white and trying the 'stripey' paint job. it kinda works but maybe not nurgle enough.....and some of the GS bellies etc dont lend them selves to the stripey paint job. sigh. its all very confusing really. lol. when i get it close enough ill post a pic and get some other thoughts.

ok so here is my paint scheme. i have used my least favourite models as a test piece. i would really like some C&C before i crack on with the rest of them!!
the bolt gun i have painted red, but im wondering if i could get away with a tin bitz rust based scheme....simply to speed up the time taken to paint.
please let me know your thoughs.

as ever, many thanks

DAMN!!! The metal looks okay, no complaints, but PLEASE tell me how you painted the armour, it is brilliant! Was that a series of whiet strokes or some other act of genius?

I'm with Alpharius on this one, those white stripes look ring-a-ding-ding. I think a look that is often overlooked with death guard is the portrayal of their armour. It's always refered to as knackered and cracked but it has a really distictive look in many illustrations, which you've admirably conveyed here. The surface looks almost like a sickly tree bark, or grooved bone. This also compliments the cloven feet. I think your technique is very good, with depth.

I skimmed over your thread and noticed that you're employing some old skool marines in there too. I would question whether they'd fit in with contemporary DG, but then they may just blend in if placed in a squad. I'm all for Chaotic insanity, but I would hate to see the effort you've invested become undone by something as trivial as (now) below par miniatures. Just a thought, and obviously a personal preference.

Keep the posts coming.

As an aside, I've been working on a vindicator and our use of green stuff is uncannily similar...

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

Very cool painted armor on that plague marine, I would probably pick out some of the details in a contrasting color to prevent it from looking too monochrome myself. I like the red gun!

jedi76: i see your point and i think your right, maybe paint the skulss a metal/rusted colour, or gold.

anti-mag: i see your point too, but i like using the old marines. these guys are meant to have been around for thousands of years and i wanted some ancient armour to represent that, i have also ordered the 'armour through the ages' kits to add the same kinda depth. i kinda like it, but i do see what you mean.

as for the paint on the armour i confess i wasnt sure what the reaction would be. so i am really pleased you all think its ok! as to how i did it..i hesitate to ask but....you guys want a tutorial or something? or just a written list of steps?

as ever many thanks

With the new TLOS rules, you can expect to almost never get a cover save. The size of the Daemon that's coming out of that baby is immense.

The deamon coming off the tank is not part of the hull, it is part of the weapon and TLOS allows you to ignore weapons, tails, wings, ect. That would be my arguement. Of course if you use this arguement then you can't state that the deamon on top of the rhino blocks LOS to model behind...so there is a trade off.

quick painting guide for the armour:
spray white primer
green ork hide foundation all armour trim
pain the eyes gold (im gonna try this on helmets AND heads for that internal power look)
paint the bolter casing mechrite foundation red and the rest of the bolter and knife tin bitz.
using the new washes: wash in black (heavily focuss in recess etc) then brown, then green, a real heavy coat of green.
water down skull white and apply over the armour in thin, quick stripes, until you get a fair coverage. (this may mean going over some areas more than once but its dry as soon as it hits the model so it took no time.) once that was done i washed the armour again in brown, before going over it again with the watered down white.
the bolter is highlighted with mechrite red, then mechrite red with bleach bone for the extreme line. the armour trim is highlighted with camo green.
it sounds long but actually it didnt take that long and i paint slower than my nan knits. with batches of ten i should be able to crack on at pace. when i get the time to crack on at pace though.
im thinking that for my character models using more than one colour of stripes (i.e. brown, bleach bone and white) will add more depth and help them stand out....you think that will work or look messy?)

hope this helps

phill
