I made that argument because my cousin's boyfriend (ew) told me he didn't want
to transfer over to DVD because his collection of porn was mostly VHS.

I didn't want to ask any questions, so I just laughed and went back to the party.

Blue Ray will take over thanks to PS3 reliance on them and they are slowly creeping in

PS3 is hardly *reliant* on Blu-Ray. It just incorporates them.

Theoretically, had Blu-Ray lost the format war, PS3 games could be published on a DVD.

Blu-ray will *not* "replace" DVDs as the mainstream mass-market video format and anyone who thinks that will happen is crazy.

DVDs as a format has many, many years to go still and by the time the masses are actually ready to change there will be no discs.

Blu-Ray will go down in history as an orphaned format like the Laserdisc. A perfectly wonderful format that just had the stars aligned against it for mainstream success.

I still have my laserdisc player. There were laserdisc special editions that have never made it to DVD (but I keep thinking of setting up a way to burn them onto DVD). The reasons I keep my player:

Criterion Collection of Aliens had a whole bunch of extras that's not on any DVD I'm aware of. The Alien one has some extras too, but not nearly as many.

I have the 'real' Star Wars movies (first three) on Laserdisc. For some reason, I think there were a few edits from the theatrical version, but most importantly, it doesn't have all the extra gubbinz that Lucas when back and added. I don't hate Lucas for doing it, but I wish he had both versions available (maybe he does now, I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old, so I don't have time to paint minis let alone keep up with DVD releases).

Dunno about that. With every PS3 sold, a Blu-Ray drive is sold.

PS2 and X-Box containing DVD drives gave DVD a considerable leg up in the market, as when it launched, players and discs were far from cheap. But thanks to 'piggy backing' on other products, it gained market proliferation, and the rest was then history.

The PS3 is a tiny, tiny sliver of the home entertainment market.

DVDs had many obvious improvements over VHS that even the simplest person could see and even so it took YEARS for DVD to wrestle market dominance from VHS.

Blu-Ray has very few improvements over a basic DVD, mainly disc space and picture quality. Your average person could give a rats-ass about disc space and most people honestly don't care about the bump in picture quality between a DVD and a Blu-Ray. The vast majority of the country doesn't have HDTVs and has no real interest in upgrading.

Blu-Ray is only a cared about by the select few video-philes like us. The problem is, there are people like me, despite having a 60" plasma and being a HDTV whore I refuse to buy a Blu-Ray because I can get HD movies and content through other means, mainly via cable and Xbox Live right now.

I am exactly the kind of person who should be buying a Blu-Ray player but I'm not. And that's a bad sign for Blu-Ray when the hardcore knows your format is already obsolete and the mainstream has no interest.

Mark my words: Blu-Ray will never, ever be the primary source for watching home videos in this country, it won't ever even be close.

Apparently the value of movie media is its cross use as a weapon. So lets see if we can encode a full length movie onto a katana. Perhaps the soundtrack can be modulated in via a sticatto of machine gun fire.

Interestingly enough, the PS3 is the least expensive Blu-Ray optoin available. A friend of mine recently went out looking for a Blu-Ray player and found that all the stand alone players he could find were about $100 more than buying a PS3, so he went with it. It's really funny, because he doesn't play video games.

I bet if the army drove around blasting Coldplay out of loudspeakers, all the Iraqi insurgents would collectively turn gay and surrender. Almost like how that song killed the aliens in Mars Attacks.

Anyway I agree, blue ray is a flash in the pan. On that note I am planning to get a PS3 when I build my "media room" after I move, and I will prolly get some blue ray movies or TV show collections, but in general I will mostly be sticking to DVDs.. From the distance to from my sofa to the tv, I'm sure an upconverted DVD will be good enough in most cases... I don't need to see every individual hair on king kong...

The question I keep asking myself is whether or not I'll ever buy a movie again, regardless of format.

When I can see any movie I want for free on you tube, I don't see any reason to spend money to watch it.

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair.

SoCal, USA!

When the Chinese and Russians can copy Blue Rays for <$1 each, then Blue Ray will replace DVDs.

Until then, the world will be dominated by DVDs because they are cheaper.
____

Personally, we won't switch until the player is <$50 and disks are <$5.

And that assumes that the Blue Ray encyryption is broken in perpetuity by the Chinese.

Otherwise, it'll be DVDs all the way.

ik but the original debate for this thread was whether HD-DVD or Blue Ray would come out on top. And Blue Ray did. Or at least that was the debate for a good portion.

Neither format matters now that digital storage and distribution are taking over.

Blue ray was a dead medium before it won the game. Now it's just waiting to die.

That hasn't been true for a loooooooong time. You can get blue ray players for ~200 dollars now if you know where to shop.

Toowoomba, Australia

I buy only TV shows on DVD as dollar per hour of watching they are fantastically cheap.

All 4 seasons of BSG, the minisodes and the 2 telemovies on 10 discs... yes please, I'll jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon for that.
The companies just have to bundle the series correctly... Imagine being able to buy each series of stargate for $40US on 2 discs and 1 smalll pack...

I don't see a need to replace my DVD collection with blue ray. I certainly was glad to be rid of the VHS hassle though.
