I put down the hobby for a realy long time myself. My son found an old box of figs and asked me about it, one thing led to another and now we're both into it. The first models I did after 10 + years didn't turn out nearly as nice as yours. I find that lots of things have changed about the way painting is done. The paints are a lot better, washes are different, and the minis themselves are waaay better. Keep playing with different tecniques and different materials, and keep up the good works!!!

Thanks, I used to love painting metal miniatures and hated the plastic ones, now it seems to be vice versa, the detail on the plastics is so much better than it used to be. I hasten to add though I was 14/15 years when I last put down my paintbrush, I couldn't even drybrush back then!

Mods, I guess now that I know I'm sticking with it would it be possible to move this into the blog section or should I start a new thread there?

Looking good so far, Johnynoi. You're tactical squad was a bit thick paint wise, but you're other stuff is looking great!

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Yeh too many thick coats on the first tactical squad, I was still getting used to the foundation paint base, that stuff is gooey!

Been cracking on with the librarian. Its due in to my local GW for a panting comp at 4pm tomorrow and I still have a fair bit of detail and highlighting to do ...! Here is how it looks with the deadline 16 hours away

Are you painting with a black undercoat, and if so, how do you get that white so good?

Do you mean the white on the helmets of the Vanguard squad? If so I base it with a couple of thin coats of Codex Grey then 3 thin coats of Skull White

Finished up the Librarian with an hour to spare, although there are a few bits I'm not happy with and would have spent more time on or done differently

@ Legoburner - Thanks!

@ OnTheEdge - I just water down some scorched brown and paint in in the recesses (don't try to wash it because painting yellow on top of that is super hard to get smooth)

Got most of the base colours done on the Vanguard Vets over the past couple of days so I could play my first thousand point game (the vets were classed as just normal assault marines

And the thousand points semi painted so far, excuse the camera shot, I had to use the flash so all the colours look way too bright

Played against a vicious Dark Eldar army at my local GW, got beat 6-4 with me having a couple of real bad rookie mistakes (teleporting terminators way too close to big hovery vehicles with witches on board)

Man of the match award goes to a lonely tactical marine who managed to take down a Ravager/Raider with a single bolter shot after the rest of his squad got cut to pieces, and to my dreadnought who was my last model standing despite taking a pounding from dark lances all game!

Next up is a Predator, tactical squad, assault squad and a jump pack chaplain.

Thanks guys, couldn't get to sleep last night so decided to see if I could make some Devastators out of my bits box. I'll either use them as a stand alone squad or as swap ins for my tac squads. First time ever attempting to do conversion work so let me know what you think

Love the conversion work on the multimelta and especially on the lascannon. Maybe you could try to bring the heavy bolter closer to the body, it looks a little "stuck on"at the moment. This thread is getting better all the time.

Great stuff!

One thing about the dev Hbolter: IMO the ammo chain might look better underneath. It's too round to look like the kind that goes over the top which are more flat since they usually run from the box to the feed.

it should be a simple cut and glue to put it underneath where it will look liek a hanging chain.

Woot, came first in the painting competition with 80% of the total votes!

Got some standard Bikes yesterday and had a wee play about. Still to attempt some GS'ing on it but fairly pleased with how it's turning out so far

Started painting the Predator as well, I'm going to try and copy the freehand from the Rhino door on the hatch on top of the turret

C&C welcome as always

Nice work. I'm this ][ close to starting a IF force, based on these models.

Couple of comments:

I like the lascannon heavy. It hearkens back to the 2nd edition Marine Heavies who had their weapons on their shoulders.

You should check out the older models. it would be a very cool retro-look to convert your heavies to look like the OOP ones.

And I love the pose on the bike rider. That is very dynamic. Keep it going!

Thanks Cruentus, I remember the old ones well, especially the amount of times the heavy metal weapons fell off the marines shoulderpads!!

Did some work on the first of the bike squad today, and tried out a slightly different highlighting technique. Unfortunately the paint went on quite thick again after a few coats (damn Iyadin Darksun!!) but let me know what you guys think

I thought i'd try my hand at painting on the shoulder pad symbols instead of using transfers. They haven't turned out quite as crisp as I'd like them too (the fist is supposed to be the same as the one on the Rhino door)

Done the face, chest eagle and dashboard on the bike as well

Hopefully after a few shoulder pads I'll be able to get the symbols looking uniform and smoother. You cant really see in the picture because of the poor light but half his face is scarred and purple, i'll get a better pic when the sun comes out.
