these look brilliant shuma. I cant wait to see the vehicles & the army shot. I think these are going to look far more intimidating with the red eyes & grey armour than some of the more gaudy marine schemes. keep it up!

Quick comparison. I'm line painting squad 2 now, the highlighting stage is easily the most time consuming of them all. 2 stage drybrush then lining then finished with all the other junk.

I've finally finished the lining on squad 2. Here they are all linney and such.
I also buckled down and finished another marine. I forgot to put a dot on the boler barrel, but that has since been fixed. For this marine I placed a logo emblem on the kneepad. More coming!

Update time! I finally (almost) finished the first squad. I also heavily updated Commander Enaki and the vehicles. More pics to come tonight/this week.
Near finished squad 2.
Sarge Stabbs.
The gallery seems to be messing with my photos, giving them levels adjustments and altering sizes at random. I'm just gonna use imageshack from now on.

Looking good so far. I have 1 suggestion that pops into my head immediately. You obviously have the skill to do this, so you should: After you're done your lining, you should go back and use your basecoat to clean up the lines. Youll find it's pretty easy once you do a couple. Not only will it make the lines generally crisper, but it will make your marines look a lot better too!
Having said that, they are pretty good how they are, but I think you have the necessary skill to make them better with minimal amount of work.

Yeah, I actually started doing that towards the end. This squad was a real learning experience for me, I'd never used a lot of the techniques I used here before, and by the end of it I was a much better painter. The missile launcher marine is the last marine I finished, and he was months later than some of the others. He's both the most intricately detailed model I've ever painted and the most recent, so it's probably the best representation of what the rest of the army will look like (though much less ostentatious, the black reach missile launcher is unbelievably gaudy). Automatically Appended Next Post: This is what the end product basing will look like. Some will have plantation, some will have rocks, but I'm going for a beach theme.
Black reach missile marine.

Does it stop auto appending after a day? This is worrisome as I would like to update my blog again someday. Ahh, good, it looks like it's on a 24 hour timer. When I uploaded the missile marine and the finished basing (as well as loaded up the sergeant and squad to imageshack) I started to worry that without other users posts the blog could never be effectively updated.

The worry was that after the topic dropped of the front page, no matter what updates I did it would continue to fall backwards in the archives. The append feature was added after I last updated the blog (it had been a while) so I was unsure.

mm the idea is solid and I think the painting would be great except you can tell your spraying it on to thick. It's comming through coarse and almost chalky on the model. Thats why I switched personally to paint on primer just use an air brush and you wont have that problem. Also I would put down some kind og basing to the models and shoot it first with a dark brown then drybrush that base color over. Would make the models pop

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Lascanons forthcoming.

Agreed. I just generally don't like the black reach missile model. Why is he the only marine in the box to have a sword?

Yeah, i have a tendency to overdo it and I'm using a 3 year old can of GW black spray primer. And I don't wait for good weather. In general I'm bad at this. Whats a good, cheap, and even back primer? GW is overpriced and awful and the auto primer I've tried still isn't spectacular.
Thats why I switched personally to paint on primer just use an air brush and you wont have that problem.
My first practice with an airbrush probably won't come any time soon unfortunately.

BTW, why the red access panels? I think the models look more coherent with regular grey panels, and more interesting with neutral metallics. Also, you're over-highlighting - a little bit goes a long way. You can thin your white highlights, and only do the upper edges. Finally, a thin wash of Devlan Mud or black would help add a bit more tonal "depth" to your greys, while tying the highlight into the armor.

Tamiya makes a good black spray. it's a bit on the pricey side, but it's always given me a base coat I can be proud of. There are some people around here that love a certain cheap auto primer... maybe they'll chime in soon.
Also, I see a lot of mold lines... they make me cry.
aside from that, nice job!

Also, I see a lot of mold lines... they make me cry. Welcome to assault on black reach. Enough extra plastic to start a new army. Believe it or not, I did clean up these models. Just clearly not enough. BTW, why the red access panels? I think the models look more coherent with regular grey panels, and more interesting with neutral metallics. To keep the red and grey theme? I'm not a tremendous fan of little blocks of metallc color, and without small color shifts the model starts to look like I never painted it in the first place (The gray is quite similar to the basic plastic color). I'm not a tremendous painter and things like "thin your paints" and "Buy new brushes, you're painting with brushes that were around in 2004" just confuse me. Finally, a thin wash of Devlan Mud or black would help add a bit more tonal "depth" to your greys, while tying the highlight into the armor. I'll start experimenting with the washes soon. I had been planning to try, but I've been painting this squad for like 9 months (I'm lazy). And I just never did.

That's fine, tho there's nothing wrong with grey marines - it's your army. For me, it's like a red polka dots effect and breaking up the model shape.
It depends on how you do the metallics. As you're grey, the metallics just add visual interest. IMO, you'll get better "small color shifts" effect out of the dip than you will from the little rectangles, but that's just me.
Heh, we won't go into how old some of my WiP things are.

I thought the red panels add a nice touch, to be perfectly honest.
As for your spray issue... goto your local hardware store and grab some Krylon Flat Black. It's like 4$ Canadian a can, works amazing. It also has a cool nozzle that wont clog or hurt your finger after extended use.
