"And there's Ozy with the H.B.M.C. story, again ...."

I have to admit I feel a tinge of envy although I was involved in the hobby in those days (late 90's?). I think I was playing Angband at the time.

You were there Ozy? I admit the name is a little on the familiar side, but the ones that always stuck in my mind were Ragnar, Kaptin Gravin (who did post here many moons ago), Master of the Deathwing (who very quickly became MOTD), Loyal Space Marine (LSM), Dan Effinger (DE), Jonothan Axe Crazy, Smeghead, and a few others. Even had a friend of mine posting under the name of D.C.O.C.T. (Distant Cousin of Captain Tycho).

I managed to find Codex: UGW Website via the wayback machine. Not complete sadly, but it was quite funny.

And yes, I was not as cynical back then, but I was also a lot younger too and didn't really know what GW was actually like as a company (besides, a Rhino cost $17 Australian back in those days, so prices weren't an issue).

BYE

Well Ozymandias isn't quite as memorable as Half Brother of Marneus Calgar but yeah, I was there. I also posted as Grand Master Thaddaeus for a short time. I continued to get christmas emails from Ragnar and Kaptin Gavrin till I stopped using my AOL email address (several years ago).

I had forgotten about Smeghead but do recall MOTD and Sniper.

EDIT: I forgot about Codex: UGW! I made an entry but I don't know if I ever made it into the final version (if there ever was a final version). Ahhh, early 90's web-browsing.

The Realm of Inisfail... I remember that place now.

Even D.C.O.C.T. is in there, with all his plasma based rules.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Is that Jervis?

I thought it was the Space Emporer, approving Jervis,

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Now, I can't vouch for whether it really was the 'ultimate' GW website, but all I know is that it had a Guestbook (not a forum - those probably hadn't been invented yet). It was just a humble guestbook....

Eventually I stopped using ALL CAPS, but the 'BYE' remained. And I've used it ever since.

I know the feeling. Back in those days (or maybe just shortly after since 56k modems were arround) I was on "The Ultimate 40k" website. It was a good place and had interesting stuff. But in a similar way, I started signing my posts with ****Phoenix**** and I've never kicked the habit. It's a lot easier these days since you can just put it in your signature rather than typeing it every time though. Ahhh how the world has evolved...and by that I mean the virtual world.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

I always wondered about BYE myself. Truth be told, the first few times, I thought HBMC was huffily saying BYE as if he was stomping out the door, and my reaction was pretty much, "WELL %&@$ YOU TOO!"

Then I realized that was his thing.

Also, I thought HBMC was like, "Heavy Bolter (Master Craft)" or some such.

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."
