Did anyone notice that the OP didn't say a word after opening this thread? He shows up, says something about Tau and then dissapears for 3 days.

Maybe he's some sort of professional internet troll...

Actually, I invite all of you to consult the map in the center of the BRB.

Notice something about how the galaxy is devided left to right somewhat. Almost a yin&yang equal division.

The Tau "are" too small to dominate this much of the map. Also, if left where they were at the point of the last codex they wouldn't be able to travel the vast distances required to expand further(They don't have an artificial neronomicon).

But the Tau don't work alone. Notice the placement of recently recognized "Frontier" races. My bet is on a 4th sphere expansion that creates the Tau federation or some such. They'll be able to do this because of the race that now gives them the ability to teleport over larger distances. Couple that with some reverse engineering of necron space drives and the Tau are no longer limited to that little area.

Will the Tau eventually take over? Heavens no. As a Tau player I can happily say this because, if they did, there would no longer be a game to play.
Don't get me wrong. IMHO Tau are here to stay and will stick it out untill the end of this story arc. I just expect the story arc to end in a Wagnerian/Nordic Ragnarok where everything is destroyed and then reborn. Thus forcing us all to start over.

Can't see this divide. All "new" players on this map are located at the outer rims of the galaxy.
If we include the race-specific maps in our thoughts, there is no place without some of the widespread races.
Seems like spheres of influence are interlaced.

Nice bet,but you'll lose.
1) tyranids tend to come in from a course that includes Tau worlds
2) GW's posterboys as neighbours.

So Tau will face 2 opponents they can't handle. Endless monster-hordes and the ultra successful blue boys.
And the idea of reengineering necron tech makes me

But Tau could be a fine vessel to bring new races into 40k (as units). If done right,it will add to the game.
Done badly,Tau could be the least attractive units in their own codex.

So a Xeno-"federation" may be useful to give the sculptors a chance to do some new awesome Models and the game-designers
may write a Tau-federation dex to bring those "frontier" races as Tau-allies into 5th ed.

The usual way of GW will demand a price for new units and new toys are always more shiny than old,so any Tau unit wouldn't
benefit from changes but their allies would get all the good stuff.

And we've been told there is no free place or time to add a new race to 40k.

I was talking about a xenos/human division of the galaxy. Examine the map, as a sort of before and after. The Imperium has a much smaller presence on the right side of the map. Couple that with the Thexian elite(another cooperative race due to trading), The very close by Barghessi, the Exodite worlds, and all of those fragmented smaller races then you've got the division.

As far as the tyranids..meh, I've yet to lose to them in a game. It'll happen, just hasn't yet.

The Ultras have their hands full and have shown at least once that they respect the Tau enough to break with Imperial doctrine on how they are to be handled. As a matter of fact, I believe the Tau are the only ones to have successfully negoitiated a peace with the Imperium as of the current time game-wise. If I'm wrong on this please correct me.

Necron idea of reverse engineering not my own but GWs from Dawn of War.

As to the Tau not getting shiny new stuff in a codex update. Just look at the last codex. They recieved very nice equipment upgrades and a new race. So, its not like completely unfeasable for it to happen again. Especially, in a newly emergent federation where most members, at first, will keep their best weapons for themselves. The Tau will still be attractive in such a federation.

Your probably right about the no new races. I will add this caveat, though. What is GW going to do once it is no longer writing new material for TLotR?

Mabe look at page 128+132. 2 maps of imperial presence showing distribution of forces.
Your "divide" isn't existant there

I do see 2 races able to negotiate:

1) Eldar (but they tend to change sides) 2) Kroot (mercenaries)

Other won't negotiate ever: Orks,Tyranids,traitors,demons,necrons.

Depends what we get in Codex IG. If GW follows its course from SM, new units may be the "winner".
And any release could also have this "sell new stuff" policy.

The worst case could be Tau as "star trek" in 40k.

Since we were reminded that GW has more manpower for models than rules, I would guess there is a strategy to release the
codices for IG / necron / ?DE? / SW, followed by another "terrain/mission" book.

I think you meant pages 138 & 132, and I have. The Imperial presence on the right side outnumbers the left sides about 3 to 1.

As for the Tyranids, I was going for the opposite. I'm not the best player, but I still win. Means that the bugs aren't so uberscary.....at least until they get their next codex.

You left out the Thexians, Barghessi, and all the smaller races. With their appearance on the map, it sems that GW is suggesting at something. It could be just expanded scenarios or it could be locating points for new Tau Allies.

Ha, I made my escape with the power source.

I absolutely agree that the IG codex will give a strong Idea of what the Tau are in for.

Hmph, Star Trek. Could be fun...I was thinking Galactic trade federation.....Nah that would probably end up with lawsuits from both Franchises. HHMMM, Jedi's in 40k Chaos or Loyalists? Q=Deciever or Chaos? OOooooo, Deanna Troy and Seven of nine as Sisters of Battle. Thats a winner.

It's nice, but it isn't very sweet.

To the OP
Nah, Tau won't be able to keep control of their empire if they expand to far as it would take them too long to react to trouble as they can't use the warp to same extent as other races. They'll just continue to be a pain in the ass for another 10K years.
