The hardest thing I've ever had to put together would be the new drop pod. That said I've scratch built a stompa and built a tyranid army. The drop pod just has an odd interior and the instructions don't give the correct order of placement.

Why does that SPACE SHIP (thunderhawk) have tiny windshield wipers? They would be useless at the speeds it travels and it doesn't really rain in space.

Do you remember that time that thing happened?

Hardest thing I've built would have to be the new drop pod, or the thunderfire cannon. nothing is right with those models....

The new drop pod was a challange for me. Considering Old models the old Predator Sponsons were a pain in the ass since they were cast badly so you had to cut a lot out for them to fit and the would constantly fall off the side when trying to glue them in place.

Obliterators and Demon Princes are all big and metal. Penitent Engines are a complete pain, as are Land Speeders. The metal Killa Cans and Deff Dreads look like hell to deal with as well.

Hardest kit?

Warhound titan, so many annoying leg pieces that have to be custom cut to fit its 'pose' ugh....

Also the old FW Baneblade was a bit of a pain, the plastic baneblade is like a kids toy its so easy.

I don't know if it would be the hardest but my eldar revenant titan was a horrifying experience. any titan for that matter is hard to put together cause their so expensive your afraid you'll break it and then there's 700 bucks down the drain. Oh, and the revenant broke. I cried.

I would give you a high five but my power fist is stuck in the on position.

I'm thinking because it's a Drop Ship that makes atmospheric entries. It's nice to be able to see!

FW Eldar Revenant Titan.
Glue does not apply well on resin, and I find it almost impossible to make it stable.

Aside from FW, it would be either Bloodthirster or Lord of Change, due to the metal wings.

Same here, 1st game with it, 2nd turn -> torso broke. (was removing it from the table, since it was one shotted by a monolith... 6-6-6-6...)
I cried even more.

My Ghaz model fell apart six time as I was glueing him.

I'd be glueing on an arm, and the legs would fall off. I'd glue back on the legs, and the other arm would fall off...then the legs fell off too. I know I should have used drilling and pinning, but I'm too lazy (counter productive)

as for plastics, I loved making the baneblade, that was fun. But it felt like if I mucked up one stage the rest would become a nightmare!!

I'm looking forward to the new plastic stompa! that will be a plastic kit to remember!

Not GW, but the Privateer Press Men of War Demo Corp are a pain in the butt. You have to address the problem of getting them to stand up straight, but they you have the hammer and arms to attach at the same time and you only have 4 small contact points to work with.

I don't get it. I've made every single model mentioned in this thread, with the exception of the monolith, and I haven't had any problems with any of them.

Every problem described so far can be solved with one of two tools:

First, the pin vise. Every single join on a metal model should be pinned. Every one, no exceptions. Every single join of a metal part to a plastic part should be pinned. All of them. Every join involving resin should be pinned. The only exception for resin is the really really thin pieces like decorative plates. Does it take a bit longer? Of course. But your stuff will hold together.

I've dropped models off the table and had them suffer nothing more than minor paint chips. Once, I dropped a unit of metal models that I was bringing downstairs to my priming table and they fell all the way down the stairs. A couple of swords bent, but none of the glued joins broke - they were pinned.

For models already mentioned in this thread, this include the Lord of Change, and Bloodthirster wings, penitent engines, and any forgeworld stuff.

Secondly, the clamp. Go to micro-mark.com and order a set of modeling clamps. They're super-cheap, and make things like rhinos, leman russ hulls, land speeders and the like trivial. Simply lock your clamp in position and let the plastic cement set. All it takes is a little patience.

I'll second Pavonis' assessment of the Thunderfire cannon. There was much cursing from a new and proud owner of the Marine Spearhead when he was trying to dry fit it.

I'm working on my son's monolith at the moment. The instructions on the side of the box are worth a laugh, but luckily I have the WD where they detail the assembly step by step.

Same thing for the Land Raider. It's still sitting in it's box after 10 years.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

1st - Metal Thunderhawk. Never saw one "live" but that's just sheer madness.
2nd - Warhound Titan. The model is so top heavy that's almost impossible to have in a decent "in movement" position. Besides the way I assemble them, I drill everything and even carve holes to fit magnets so it can be stored/transported more easily. I can't understand why FW does not add holes on their larger pieces so all we'd need to do was to add the magnets. More specifically at the waist joint.

Yeah I agree that all pewter stuff is a hassle. I usually glue 2 pieces together and hold them while watching TV. But by the time the model is complete my finger tips are sore.

I pin now but instead of using metal rod I use tooth picks. They are 100% better. They absorb the extra glue and expand making the pinning tighter.

Tried this out on my Greater Warbeast Horde model (feels like 5 lbs of metal lol) and I only had to hold the pieces together for a minute or so.

The windscreen wipers on the Thunderhawk are for when it's down and outside planetside you still need to take off even when it's raining. For me the Space Marine Devestators I also had fun and games with the old techmarine.

It is an oath we honour. You know FW will supply you with replacement pieces if they are broken right??

FW Eldar Revenant Titan.
Glue does not apply well on resin, and I find it almost impossible to make it stable.

The most common complaint about resin is that it bonds too well with superglue. You have to break the model to get it to come apart. Only thing I can think of is that you are not pre-treating the resin surfaces to be glued, that might be why you had trouble.

I agree with Redbeard that after I learned to love pinning, most metal or metal/plastic models got easy. One exception:

Obliterators. If I ever get my hands on the designer that said "hey, let's build a model with ten separate millimeter-thin tin blades that all have to be glued on", I am going to drill a lot (about 9x 10) of 0.5 millimeter diameter holes in him and fill them with 0.4millimeter diameter brass rods.

And when it comes to fitting, the obliterator parts fit so badly that I was reminded of old Confrontation (by Rackham, not the other ones) models. The amount of greenstuff I used for three of them would have been enough to scratch-build a fourth one...

Worst models to assemble . . .. . . . . .

ANYTHING and I do mean ANYTHING from Forgeworld. Whether its warped parts, HUGE chunks of flash that need either a hammer & chisel or a small orbital sander (anyone who's put together a Warhound will know about the bits at the top of the carapace where the engine vents fit), air bubbles, pieces that just don't fit together, oh, and my all time favourite, missing parts.

Seriously, I've bought resin models from many other companies, and the finish you get makes Forgeworld look like an infant business. But, if we keep buying them, they won't change.

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

Ah, the metal Thunderhawk. I was at Cancon the year that someone knocked theirs over. A one foot fall onto the table shattered it into dozens of pieces..

I'll second the nomination of Lord of Change wings. I have a full centimetre (1/2") gap greenstuffed in with sculpted feathers.

But the hardest models I've ever had to assemble have all been Privateer Press. Try putting together a box of Nyss or a Skorne starter, you'll be glad to go back to assembling easy things like metal horrors.

With regards to the Bloodcrusher, I thought it was fairly easy to assemble for a metal kit of it's size - but I did have one which had a warped torso which had to be bent back into shape, if you didn't have a good one to compare to I can see how that would be hard.
