Wasn't it common to take mixed guard in 2nd edition? Actually in the rules, I though they said in the codex that IG armies take regiments from across the galaxy, you shoudl expect to field a mixed bag.
I prefer the approach where all the miniatures are similar purely for aesthetic reasons.

This is what i was going to do with my guard. I love dkok but I can't afford a army in one go. I will start with cadians and slowly buy the kreig then I will have cadians and kreig two different armies.

When I played guard I was always nuts about having all my infantry look as similar as possible. I could barely tolerate the idea of things like stormtroopers being different. I considered this my thing, however, and I wouldn't expect someone else to want to do their army exactly the same way. I wouldn't inflict my neuroticism on someone else.
One reason I like Eldar though is that for some reason I feel better about having an army with a mix of models playing them rather than IG.

Besides, if he can play against Black Legion CSM (each unit different shapes), he can play against mixed Guard.
like i said, maybe the guy is trying to give OP a hard time , maybe not . I really dont know.
But what i said is definately true .
I might need glasses since i often come across with some armies with painting
or layers of glue etc etc that extorted the mini so much that they look all look like chaos spawns to me.
TFG's army was half built, he wasn't just giving the OP a hard time, he was being a prick to boot.

I agree with other posters - TFG is just being TFG.
I think you handled it perfectly: "Well, guess you can't be using your half-built figs then?" and he shut-up.
Perfect response.

My entire army is based around this. It is a penal regiment force, so I figure most of its troops would be from different units from across the galaxy, and for convenience, a lot of them would keep their original uniforms. The way I see it, most troops assigned to these regiments will not be there for long, either earning absolution or dying in the attempt. I'm thinking about giving them an insignia to tie them together (a black diamond with a red line through it) that could be applied to their gear and vehicles for the duration of their penance.
