I'm up to 12 (counting the Master of the Ravenwing as 2).
I'm about to finish 55 chaos marauders for a friend of mine, and 15 marines for myself (counting a landspeeder as 4 because I had to do alot of repair work and 15 decals).
That'll take me up to 82 this year, which is on track for the 520 but I doubt I can keep up this pace. I'd be happy to finish 10 every 2 weeks when school starts back up.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Oh, all right. I'll make sure I paint '09 on the bases of my minis this year, and see how I go. I also seriously doubt I'll hit 500, but I'm interested to see how far I do get.

25 Dire Avengers, 5.5 Fire Dragons and an Ork Nob up to table standard so far. What do tanks count as, though?

First, you need to have 520+ unpainted minis...

For most people, just having enough raw material to paint is a challenge, as the typical army hovers around 50 to 100 minis.

Now, when I first got in, I had a lot more time, and I painted a *lot*. I'm pretty sure I've painted a peak of 2-3 hundred in a year.

But 500+?

I don't think so.

I have somewhat more than that, and I painted the bulk of it over a few years.

Besides, it's not so much the painting as the prep. That's what's time-consuming.

It's actually not that bad. I imagine people have at least 100-200 minis they haven't painted
if they've had any sort of time in this hobby. People buy plastic kits and some don't like to
trade or get rid of unused models, so there's a ready supply. A lot of it may even be
assembled.

Anyway, it was just an idea.

Oh, I know it's not so bad -- I logged my painting when I painted for hire, and 10 models/week is an easily maintainable pace if you're actively painting. I would regularly knock out units of 10 to 20 models in a week's time, and that was when painting took as long as prepping. Now, with GW washes and dip techniques, painting would take somewhat less time.

Now me, I'm going to paint a few thousand points worth of Guard this year, so I've got my work cut out for me. It's maybe 100 minis, even adding a couple dozen various Tanks and Superheavies and such.

It won't be 520, but it will finish my army.

So to me, that's far more significant.

How about this:
- sticky the 2009 resolutions
- run a year-long "2009 army completion" challenge, with month-by-month progress updates similar to the "Vows"?

Most of the guys I know try to average about a mini a day over the year. Most of the time it isn't actually done that way, but they want to try to keep that average.

I've never really kept track of how many figs I have painted in a year. I might try to keep track of that starting right now.

lets see. I own IG, ORK and skaven. SO you would think I would be a prime candidate. However. WHen I first started GW in 2005. I do not know that I still have painted that many models. 200+ skaven, 150+ orks 200+ IG thats 550 models thereabouts but thats over 3 and a half years. So NOPE. I like women too much to do that.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Heh. So, the challenge for me is, 500ish models with paint on them, clock at least eight university units, work a full time, travel-intensive job AND maintain my long-term relationship. Twelve months, minus almost seventeen full days to go. That means university starts in a month... gak.

I've been averaging almost 200 posts on Dakka per month over the past six, so if I can turn that into painting time... hmmm. But then you'd all miss out on my wonderfully informative posts . I'll just have to halve my Dakka time, which is probably healthy. And no more D&D writing.

Anyone want to place any bets?

10 dollars a day

vs.

10 models a week, 4-8 dollars per model (to account for metal and plastic)

You come out cheaper this way.

I'm game for giving this a try. I've finished 25 chaos warriors, and 11 chaos hounds since the first of Jan.

Lots of gaurd on the waiting list and more dwarves than I can count.

What'll make this expensive will be if you go the all metal route. Plastic sounds like
a great way to get at it.

About 2 years ago or so, when I was unemployed and searching I painted commissions. I completed 7 armies inside of 6 months. 1 was a knights errant brettonian army, a Demon-hunters, guard allied list, the rest were various marine armies. i would say I came pretty darn close to 520 figs total for the year after that.

So how would I count 15mm stuff, like Flames of War? A single 15mm infantry figure doesn't seem fair to count as a whole model. Maybe have one base count as one model? That'd be four or five infantry figures, or three or four infantry figures and an AT gun or artillery piece. Tanks would count as one, I think that's fair.

Any other ideas for smaller scales?

There definately has to be some sort of exchange rate for size of miniatures.

For example, I just painted a bunch of bloodletters. Now I'm working on the Bloodcrushers. A bloodcrusher is a rhino with a bloodletter riding on it. If the bloodletter by itself is 1, how can the bloodcrusher also be one? (Especially if you paint the riders separately from the rhinos).

Well should cavalry count as two then? The mount is one model and the rider is one model? Same with bike mounted troops, etc.

Or is this becoming over-complicated?

I'd certainly never be able to do it, not to mention just simply buying 520 models would cost quite a bit of money.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Yes, yes, very interesting... so say you're painting WHFB figures, you could do it by unit strength (2 for cavalry, 3 for Ogres, and so on)...

But what about Grav-Tanks? I've got at least six to paint, and they're basically the next thing I intend to tackle.

Plenty of random Skavenslaves to fill the gaps, of course. Almost anything can be a slave...

I think using unit strength might be making things a bit more complex than it really ought to be. Like saying, "I finished three models today! Well, actually it was only one, but it was an Ogre so it counts!"

I think maybe just counting one playing piece as one model would work. So for 15mm or Epic stuff, one infantry base is one model, in 28mm one infantry figure is one model, one cavalry figure is one model, one tank is one model. Hopefully counting tanks as one model will balance out since most people probably don't have as many tanks to paint as infantry.

Because really, at the end of the day, the point is to be painting as many models as possible, not just a bunch of high unit strength models to pad our score.
