But yeah. Broadside railgun into a Trukk/Battlewagon. If it explodes or is wrecked, the Boyz pile out. You then use your Hammerhead(s) to submunition the gak out of them!

one of your best chances is considering with his strategy he has a lot more flexibility on the battlefield than you so i suggest putting your hammerheads on the 2 sides of the battlefield so you can hit the side armor also with your ability to jump your broadsides suits im pretty sure they can take down a vehicle and do ok against ork boys shootas the ones in the battlewagons will only have 12 models in each also the walkers are gonna be nightmares for you you want to hit them hard if they get to close to you you are screwed no matter what almost really oyur tactic is to run from him while shooting everything at his vehicles taking away most of his points his battlewagons in fact and the big meks if you can do that without losing too many models ie 5 you hvae a really good chance now taking away around 400 to 500 points away from him hope you win

I would think things like Markerlights to remove cover saves + Railheads would do a lot of good work vs. Orks.

Nob bikers however probably don't care too much about all that though.

Yes, I meant to write hammerhead submunition after broadside rail shot. = p

and to the latest poster (and a bunch of others) he's not asking for general Tau tactics against Orks, he has a set army list for the last round of a delayed tournament and was asking for ways to beat a particular Ork list with HIS Tau list.

My suggestions:

Try out a unit or 2 of pathfinders and evaporate cover saves and improve BS.

Fire Warriors are amazing against orks, especially with markerlights to pop cover saves and improve BS. Why so few?

Target transports first. This is critical. Tau can only really fight in shooting phase. Everyone else can fight in assault somehow. If he makes it to you intact, you're finished.

Force him to the rear edge if you set up first.

Why so much plasma? Burst cannons aren't that interesting on XV8's. They're better on stealth suits. If you want burst cannons, put them there.

he already has his army good luck too but you weant to be on the closest side to the board and shoot him hwile oyur heavies take out vehicles first remember to fire heavies first whu=ile your assault weaons take out as many orks as he can oh piece of information he might keep the battlewagons to gether with one mek in of them to help both

So how did the game go?

Trying to type up a battle report so I can post the whole tournament. But here's a basic summary of the game:

I deployed in reaction to him. He tried to split up his forces. I stayed out of CC and my railguns ate his armor/reduced his mobility. He was tabled by turn 5. I'll give you guys a more detailed report by Sunday.

Main lesson learned from this tournament: In a strictly killpoint setup, everyone fields the meanest, hardest to kill stuff there is available. When other armies do that, Railguns have a field day.

Either way, it was AWESOME to have the Tau represented the way they should be in my first tournament.

I couldn't have done it without all of your advice. Thanks a ton!

Edit:

His exact list was:

Big Mek x2 (KFF)
3 Battlewagons with Zapp guns
3 squads of 20 shootas (with a nob w/PK)
3 smaller fast vehicles with flamers (armor 10 all around)
2 Walkers with flamers and extra CC claw

im an ork player, and ive gone against tau quite a bit now, units that really do well in killing my boyz:

mass burst cannons, flamers, railguns

a mix of these 3 over suits and railheads cause chaos, ive lost a unit of 30 boyz to a large stealth team before, and its not amusing.

with tau fire power its usually a great idea to remove mobility 1st, any ork wagonz / trukks must die 1st to stop them flanking you.
obviously if theres a looted wagon with a boomm gun, then kill that aswell before it starts killing everything.

Firewall:

units of 10 FW's work well, make sure they all have rifles for extra range, and take them in mass, once in rapid fire range you have 2 turns to thin out an ork army before being charged.

in that event, take a small unit of kroot, they may not do much, but they make a cheap suicide unit

stay as far away from the orks as possible. back your vehicles (not fast 1s) in to a corner and surround the with infantry (in cover if possble). shoot the gak out of them and hope you dont end up in cc. its basically an IG strategy but with more hope of success cuz you have fire warriors instead of guardsmen and hammerheads instead of leman russ
