Interestingly 'Beth Din', Jewish courts to settle civil disputes have been in existence in Britain for years. They have no more legal power than the proposed Sharia courts would have and yet no one has kicked up a fuss about their existence.

I wonder why not? After all it's not like the right wing press have an agenda of Muslim bashing to pursue is it!

Personally I don't think religions has any place in criminal law, but for civil law (such as is proposed for sharia law) I have no issue whatsoever.

However the hatemongering scumbags that run the 'Daily Hiel' have pushed mistruths and there are now many people who actually believe that if this goes ahead that people will be forced to obey sharia law in their daily lives.

The mind boggles and what some people are willing to believe if it reinforces their shallow prejudices.

And if we want peace on earth, we need all of humanity to basically admit every single one of us is a complete bastard out for what we can get. No one is superior to the next person, we are all just pond scum that got exceedingly lucky.

Then we can accept that what the person did to us is what we probably wanted to do as well, they just got in their first, and they shouldn't look surprised when we take it off them.

Sorted.

You bring up an interesting point here. Or perhaps it just leads to an interesting line of though. What is the point of law or at least criminal law? I would say (and I think most would agree) that the purpose is to set rules for society to function and to set punishments for those who act in ways that disturb the smooth flow of society. The amusing thing is that most major religions do the same thing. Islam is particularly clear on it's framework of how to be a "good citizen" but most others do as well (including Santanisim amusingly enough). So for the most part, criminal law in most countries that I'm familiar with is rooted in religion. Sure things have evolved from that point onward (I don't think there's a commandment that said "Thou shall not download pirated MP3's") but most of the core is still there. This makes untangling law and religion a bit more tricky than it would seem. And the big problem is going back to all the old laws and revising them to fit a more modern and worldly view...that takes years and years to acomplish. Of course it's usually when someone gets screwed by antiquated laws that these things come up so maybe we can just ignore them till they become an issue.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

And minor religions. And religions before current existing ones. And ones that will exist long after the ones we know now cease to exist. It's not like before Islam or Christianity or Buddhism people thought murder and stealing were just fantastic. It's fairly universal.
