The heavy weapon box provides enough parts for at least three times as many heavy weapons as it says it does with just a little conversion. One tripod mount, one shoulder-launched missile, and one bipod/stand mount.

And if you can be bothered, you can even get a fourth one out if you lean another weapon on the sandbags (the Heavy Bolter's a good bet).

You guys are all wrong. Buy the Gorgon Krieg infantry set and HW squad and for £65 you'd get *50* Guardsmen (with a little cutting but not much more effort than assembling plastic models) and 3 HW teams. You also get the pride of owning a better-looking guardsman army than the scrubs that play with cadians.

My original post may have been a bit confusing. I have no intentions of using Cadians unless absolutely necessary to plug gaps in my line-up. I only mentioned them, and their price, to reinforce the value of the Renegade WW1 Germans. The Renegade models cost only $.03 more, but, unlike Cadians, actually look like miserable trench-warfare cannon fodder. And they're 1/3 the cost of FW Death Korps!

HOWEVER....I AM concerned about the most cost-effective way to get loads of heavy weapons, because, like A7V's, WW1 heavy weapon teams seem to be either crap (Old Glory 25mm) or expensive (Great War Minis, Maxim MG Team =$15). Right now I'm leaning towards using Black Tree Design WW2 Germans, for which I've found suitable missile launcher, mortar, "gun on tripod", and "gun on wheels with shield" teams, with prices of $5-10 per team. These need gas masks, but a pack of 8 West Wind SOTR heads is only £3.00.

10 Renegade Assault Troops in Gas Masks @£9 (Special Weapons)
30 Renegade Gas Mask Infantry @ £25
This gives 4 squads of 7 grunts + 1 SW, with 2 grunts and 6 special weapons guys as leftovers (Command squad)

Heavy Weapons, Type 1: (Missile Launchers)
4 Black Tree Design Panzerschrek @ $5.34 for 2 = $10.68

Heavy Weapons, Type 2: (heavy stubbers, heavy bolters, mortars)
4 BTD MG34 Teams or Mortar Teams @$5.34 ea = $21.36

Heavy Weapons, Type 3a: lascannons, autocannons
3 BTD Pak 37 Guns & Crews @ $9.55ea = $28.65 (3 gun crews = 9 men, enough for 4 HW teams)

Heavy Weapons, Type 3b: lascannons, autocannons
Cadian Heavy Weapons Squad = $35
Cadian Hvy Weapons Team = $10

I like the heavy weapons squad because it comes with a boatload of big guns, but unfortunately without a cheap and ready supply of appropriate "crew" figures it's not very useful. Let's assume that I go with Option 2 for mix of heavy bolters and mortars. The total comes to:

$21.36 + £25 + £9 + £3 = $21.36 + £37 = $21.36 + $53.22 = $74.58

Bottom line: for $75 I can build a Death Korps/Steel Legion imitation platoon with:
Command Squad w/4 special weapons
4 Squads each with either heavy bolters or mortars, plus a special weapon.

I think that's a good bargain, but if anyone knows a cheaper way to build imitation-Death Korps heavy weapons teams, I'd LOVE to hear it.

Then let me apologise for the potential derailment I was party to.

But if you need cheap Cadians, now's the time.

Lets not fight guys , opinions may differ but seriously
we dont need the attitude / ego / now i know old people are grumpy but its bad for health to get so worked up.

Now lets see a box of 3 hvy weapon squad. comes with:
3 ML, 3 LC, 3 HB , 3 AC , 3 Mortar thats actually 15 Heavy weapons. Buy a few boxes of 20x cadians and you can easily fill out all the HQ hvy weapon platoons / with plenty to spare to fill the squads.

Granted MDG would be right if say a player doesnt care about all the weapons maybe he only needs the 3 perfered. While someone else can try to make the 15 weapon teams.
I know it sounds weird, but trust me its actually common. You'll run into players that insist only on HB, or only on AC for anti infantry and so on.

Both side have their preference, and their choices.
Neither is wrong either, so no need to fight right guys?

for example, im not sure what to do with my left over mortar bits,
so i just gave them to my ugly catchan plastic models xD
but they actually looked sort of cool, so im happy :x

The Renegade miniatures may look like trench-warfare cannon fodder, but they don't really look that much like Games Workshop miniatures.

I think the feelings that lead you away from plastic Cadians are great: The Imperial Guard is an incredibly diverse model range with even more diverse fluff, so lots of looks are acceptable. But big bulky weapons are a hallmark feature of a GW miniature. You'd need to make some conversions for heavy and special weapons troopers, and would probably be better off replacing the rifles and pistols too.

you should go with cadians, they're not too expensive and you get 20 in a box. better get them now though as they are changing it to 10 for a bit more money.

I say the time to buy is always "now". How long 'til the next price increase?

For me the answer is always a week before I have the cash to buy what I wanted.
