Update, finished armor damage.

I went to town on this guy, beat him up proper like he´s been pummeled and is still standing. His armor has loads of dents and scrapes, not sure if I should add oil stains and such as well. For now I´m putting him aside, and starting on the next guy.

I included some closeups of him, as well as two further comparison shots, to show the size.

Oh yeah, I also changed his squad marking. The blue on the knee was clashing with the general palette I used on him.

Comments?

How did I miss this??

Nice start Xan. Lovely to see a different take on the true-scaling.

I do have a few critical comments:

I disagree with some of the comments and decisions, mainly the size of guns. If anything, the guns are the most over sized non true scale thing in 40k. And even bulkier gun is going to eat away a lot of the visual effect of a bigger gun. If you look on the art work, you can see how tiny the guns are in comparison to "model scale" and the art work coolness and sense of scale totally rocks on all the models.

I would like to see more bulk added to the torsos, this really drives the physique home and makes the heads appear smaller, which is crucial for the overall visual IMO.

Ah, Migsula, good to get some comments from you. I agree that the guns are oversized in general, and due to the original design of the ork shoota underneath, this gun ended up quite wide. It is actually as wide and long as a scout HB.

I was actually sitting at school this morning, drawing new designs for guns, since I was feeling that these were on the large side...
I´m pretty sure I don´t want to go with standard marine boltguns, for the reasons I mentioned.

But I´m going to try and design something closer to the old RTB01 guns, those are probably the closest to the heresy era artwork.

The torso of the Heresy armor guy does look smallish now that you mention it, I don´t relish the idea of remoulding all those fiddly cables, but I may give it a shot.

Always good to hear your thought.

Hell I like it still! Its weird some shots the head looks small. others it looks perfect. All in the angles I guess. Nice work man. And maybe its an in person thing but I still think the bolter looks a good size on there. And yes I knwo they are honking huge already lol

Not that I could attempt something like this, but the head does stick out as being too small. How do other people get around that problem?

The eye of terror.

I don't think the head is too small so much as his neck looks too long. If you look at where the shoulders would be under the armor, the head is elevated too high above that position. I think it would look better if the head were more recessed into the armor.

Ok Stupid question time (been a while since i played read my sig)

Doesn't the larger base have an effect on play ?

and in response to the statments about why GW did not make em bigger originally well back in the day the subject never came up....

I am out of touch with it, last time I played we had squats, trikes, ratlings and robots....

Larger bases can have a huge impact in game. Take terminators for instance. Previously they had been on the regular 25mm bases. Mounting them on 40mm bases allows them to spread out further apart which reduces the effectiveness of templates against them. It also means that on a per model basis you can engage more enemies on smaller bases in combat.

Well, I obviously can´t speak for everyone, but for me it started with the Necromunda stuff my gaming group has been doing.
We agreed, that having marines be the same size as everyone else, just fit badly with all the fluff out there building them up like supermen.
So we´ve upped the stats, and now we´re upping the scale to something more proper as well.

As for the base sizes, these will most likely never see a 40K battlefield, certainly aren´t going to any big tournaments, they´re mostly for Necromunda, some "Movie Marine" games, and for the fun of painting.

Wow, dude is massive. Nice to see him painted up, Xan! I tend to agree with Migs on the boltgun size issue. I think that's one of the things that gets occasionally mentioned in the fluff but isn't always carried through in modeling - boltguns are BIG guns. Bigger than most normal sized humans can heft around. That's the part of the reason that IG stormtroopers carry hellguns/hotshot lasguns rather than bolters. Other than bolt pistols, I can't think of any type of bolt weapon that I've read of a normal human using in any of the BL novels. My point is that the standard boltgun should be about the right size for a True Scale marine - they're just too big and heavy for normal humans to use them effectively.

I like your idea to convert up a RTB01 bolter - I've seen some tutorials on how to do it - I think there used to be one on Bolter and Chainsword, but I'm not sure if it's still there anymore. (Argh, can't find it, sorry!)

I really like the wear and tear on him and I'm glad we get to see all the little details. Beautiful work!

On the guns: I think the slight increase in size is very neat. The regular bolters look nice and bulky on the regular Space Marine, but I think they would loose some of their impressiveness on true scale models.
The chest does look a little small, but you might be able to increase the size lengthwise without having to get into all the fiddly bits, or, alternatively work on the back rather than the front, so the power-supply will cover most of the gs work, so accuracy won't matter as much.

Again, thumbs up to you for an excellent conversion job! You inspire the rest of us. ^^

Yes but it also goes the other way too. You can now pack twice as many regular sized minis into the CC on termies because the base is so big.

I think that he is looking really good so far. With that said, I have one complaint about the actual model.

His bolter looks WAAAAY too big. It almost looks like a heavy bolter.

As far as your painting goes, It looks ok. Just a little bit flat. I would recommend using a red wash and then going over with blood red and extreme highlighting with blazing orange to really make the red pop.

Keep up the great work!

Because:
(1)They look cooler than the actual models
(2)They look closer to the way they look in the artwork and fluff
(3)It's a modelling challenge
(4)Bigger bases might make them more challenging to play in a game of 40k(?)
(5)You could add more detail to them!

Yeah, originally I wasn´t expecting it to take long, but it´s growing even now... Which is good.

I´m going for at least a full squad of these boys, looking into moulding Heresy style boltguns, I still need to talk to some people about that though.
